Mavericks Defeat Dodson, Fall to Scobey; Coyotes to 9C in 2025-26

The Dodson Coyotes and North Country Mavericks team met up at the Coyote Den for their second matchup of the season, this time a much closer game than their clash in Whitewater on December 21, a game that North Country won 66-33.

This time around, the Mavericks won 54-50. The night before, the Coyotes lost 80-34 to the Scobey Spartans in Dodson. The Mavericks defeated the Frazer Bearcubs 87-37 in Hinsdale.

This past matchup could possibly be the last matchup that the two meet up as members of District 3C, unless Dodson and North Country meet up in the postseason.

During their winter meetings from Saturday, January 18, through Monday, January 20, the MHSA came up with the 2025-26 basketball realignment, which will move the Dodson basketball teams to the 9C District. The 9C will consist of Dodson, Big Sandy, Box Elder, Hays-Lodgepole, North Star (Rudyard), and Turner.

The Mavericks will remain in the 3C District with Frazer, Lustre Christian, Nashua, Scobey, and Circle, who will transfer from 2C.

North County was led by Kade Strommen in their victory over Dodson with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.

Laytin Erickson had 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Coy Bowman had 10 points and six assists. Jake Brown had nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

Blaine Downing had eight points, 12 rebounds, and three assists. Chase Albus had three points.

Dodson was led by Lance KillEagle who had 13 points. Junior Stiffarm had nine points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks, and two steals. Frank Sonny Cole had nine points. Donovan Posey had eight points and three assists. Mason Lonebear had seven points and seven rebounds. Brayden Jones had four points, four rebounds, and two assists.

The North Country Mavericks led for most of the game and survived a seven point swing, where the Coyotes led 50-49 with 50 seconds left in the game.

Erickson made a close jumpshot and free throw to put the Mavericks up 52-50 with 44.3 seconds left. A late turnover gave the Mavericks the ball with 26 seconds left. Dodson, with three fouls to give, were unable to stop the clock. Downing added to North Country’s lead with a layup with 6 seconds remaining, sealing the game for the Mavericks.

In their loss to Scobey, KillEagle led the Coyotes with 11 points. Stiffarm had 10 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, and three assists. Cole had nine points and three rebounds. Posey had two points and three assists. Bentlie Banks had two points.

Downing led the Mavericks in their victory over Frazer with 30 points. Bowman had 22 points. Erickson had 10 points. Albus had eight points. Simonson had five points and Brown had four points.

The Coyotes are scheduled to face the Harlem Wildcats JV team on Thursday, January 30, in Harlem. They are also scheduled to host Nashua on Friday, January 31.

The Mavericks will host the Circle Wildcats in Hinsdale on Friday, January 31. They will travel to Turner to take on the Turner Tornadoes on Saturday, February 1.
