Mavericks Beat Nashua, Fall to Lustre; To Face Coyotes and Bearcubs

The North Country Mavericks split a pair of conference games last weekend after falling 51-22 to the Lustre Christian Lions on Friday, January 17 in Saco and then defeating the Nashua Porcupines 60-26 in Nashua on Saturday, January 18.

The Mavericks are scheduled to host the Frazer Bearcubs in Hinsdale on Friday, January 24 at 7 p.m. The Mavericks will then travel to Dodson to take on the Coyotes in the Coyote Den at 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 25.

The Mavericks were led by Blaine Downing in their victory over Nashua. Downing had a 29 point, 17 rebound double-double. Downing also had two steals.

Laytin Erickson had a 17 point, 16 rebound double-double. Kade Strommen had eight points. Sam Simonson had two points and three rebounds. Chase Albus had two points and two rebounds. Jaydeen Hanshew had two points. Coy Bowman had five assists.

Despite a slow start to the game, the Mavericks outscored the Porcupines in each of the quarters; 9-6 in the first, 15-2 in the second, 19-7 in the third and 17-11 in the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks outrebounded Nashua 58 to 25. Both teams controlled the ball well with both teams turning the ball over 10 times. The Mavericks had 34 points in the paint and Nashua has 12.

Erickson led North Country in their loss to Lustre with seven points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.

Downing had five points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Jake Brown had four points and three rebounds. Bowman had two points and four steals. Simonson had two points, and Strommen had two points.
