Shining in the Sr. Spotlight this week is Lucille Mitchell, retired housewife that enjoys crossword puzzles. Among her favorites are The Bible, the Ten Commandments and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Her favorite meal, “When someone else cooks.”

The Malta City Council voted to move ahead with a loan to pay for the $5 million dollar project. Greg Boos, Malta’s new Fire Chief, made his first appearance at a council meeting.

Trey Simanton came home with a first place finish at the Choteau Classic. Kaden Moore came away with 4th place.

Three local men teamed together to form the Good News Club, working with individuals dealing with suicide and depression. Members Pr. Steve Heppner, Greg Skiff and Raymond Harms invite anyone to join them at Crossroads Coffee on Wednesdays.

The Saco-Whitewater Panthers have been a work in progress for the last few years, but last Friday the team showed tremendous heart as they took down the Lustre Christian Lions in a 45-43 overtime thriller.

Speech and Drama members from Malta High School fared well in the meet they hosted. Competing were Challise Young, Macy Knudsen, Billie Orahood, Bella Mackey. Jonnie Pewitt, Daphne Johnson, Kari Koss, Madison Morris, Dawn Jenkins, Adam Mummey, Emmy Doucette, John Waters and Palmer Giblette.

The Malta Mustangs are riding on a three game winning streak after defeating Plentywood and Harlem last weekend. Their record now stands at 5-5 on the season.

In the game between Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers and Lustre Christian Lions, the Lady Panthers won 71-10, with three of Lustre’s points coming in the last minute of the game.

Paula Lundstrom, student at MSU-B was one of 107 in the nation to earn the distinction of Certified Student Government Provider by the National Conference of Student Services. She is majoring in Special Education and was selected on her leadership.

The Nature Conservancy and the Tranel family purchased the Matador Ranch from Fred Itcaina and John Sallsberry. “Fred Itcaina obviously has done a very impressive job managing the ranch. His love for animals, the environment and the ranch are obvious,” said Ned Tranel.

The Malta School District received news of E-Rate funding in the amount of $29,048.45 for the 1999-2000 school year. These funds will allow the school district to install technology opportunities at 40% or less of the actual cost of services.

The Saco School held their local Geography Bee and placing third was Brianna Barnard, second was Zach Mandeville, and winning the competition was Dillon Cassel.

Chrissy Foster and Janes Davis took first in the Humorous Duo at the Malta Speech Meet. Mike and Shannon Brady teamed up to win first in team debate; and Anabel Gattierez took first in the Expository Speaking.

Malta School Board trustees voted to offer Supt. Bill Parker a new one-year contract, with an aye vote from Bruce Hould, Sheila Simanton and Ed Pekovitch; Steve Taylor voted nay. The vote came without comment after an executive meeting that lasted more than two hours.

Get your dancing shoes polished up, there’s going to be a Fiddler’s Contest on Feb. 22 and 23. Last year’s winners were Benny Milks, first, Tom Watson won second and Clarence Blunt third.

The Malta Firemen made their annual visit to the Malta Nursing home and hospital, providing festive hats for patients and bringing cheer to brighten the holiday for them. “Baby New Year 1975” was in attendance (and stood over six feet tall and had a teddy bear!)

Malta High School speech and drama coach, and his assistants, Kent Hjelmstad and David Leuschen, accepted the team trophies for both speech and debate for Class A schools.

Laura Nordlund left Monday via train for Kalispell where she will represent Phillips County at the state Junior Miss Pageant.

Lew Tuma, former Malta Mustang wrestler, is a member of the NMC wrestling squad. Wrestling at 126 pounds, Tuma won a 5-3 decision in one match and lost a 12-4 decision in another match.

Betty Ann Erdahl and Kenneth Hughes were united in marriage at the Malta Lutheran Church on Dec. 29. Rev. Roy Erdahl, cousin of the bride officiated.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7th, Dale O’Neil reported that his car had been stolen on in front of Smith’s Café. Two juveniles were picked up with the car the following day; Louie Perry, juvenile officer and Mike Camp, Phillips County Undersheriff, returned them to Malta, reports Alert Fladland, Chief of Police.

Jan. 19, 1950

Malta police officers practiced hog-calling last Saturday afternoon when a large, unclaimed brood sow was annoying the resident of Malta’s northside. The sow rooted and snorted around town for several hours.

The VFW basketball team remained undefeated after downing a squad from Saco by a score of 58-46. The rough and tumble game went at a break-neck pace throughout. Dean Robertson of the Vets copped individual scoring honors for the might with 16 counters. LaBrie scored 12, Stengel tallied 11.

Miss Betty Doney and Rex Kaufman were married Jan. 4 by the justice of the peace in Wibaux.

An automobile transport tractor and trailer left the road and ended up in the ditch about five miles east of town. The accident occurred during heavy snowfall. The MHP said the road conditions were responsible, no charges were filed. Getting the outfit back onto the road turned out to be a major project. Six winch and wrecker trucks took part in the activities and it took many hours of work; several winch cables were snapped in the process.

Travel in these sections is impossible. County roads are just simply blocked and haven’t been this bad in 20 years.

Large herds of antelope migrating from Canada are spending the winter on the brush along the river. A herd of more than 100 were killed Tuesday near Coburg when they were hit by a Great Northern freight train.

Big plans were afoot for Koke’s annual dog race. Prizes offered included ice skates, scout knives, knife chains, $2 in cash, candy, etc.

Judge Charles Pray had been named to the federal bench in Montana by President Calvin Coolidge.

The county had purchased the money safe formerly used by the defunct Bowdoin State Bank and had placed it in Treasurer Dave Dutro’s office to keep cash tax receipts safe.

Miss Mabel O’Reilly and Dan Nicholson were married.

The only sensational news of the week was a chinook wind that warmed things up after a severe cold snap. Dr. George Clay made a trip to Ashfield to call professionally upon Mrs. Copeland who was very ill.

There was a big time down in the Larb Hills as a wedding reception was held at the W.P. Craig ranch home on Timber creek. There was dancing, supper and liquid refreshments, the Enterprise reported, and the following guest list was present: D.R. Parks and family, George Armstrong and family, and the Messrs. Downey, Sauers, Baeth, Franks, Goggins, Armstrong, Hanshaw, Akin and Thompson.
