With a notable decline in the cattle feedlots, about 4% from last year, researchers are looking at a method to control FMD (Foot Mouth Disease) outbreaks in various parts of the country.
The Montana State Library was soliciting public opinion of proposals to change the name of “Squaw Creek” in Blaine County and Phillips Counties to “Kills At Night” or “Williams Creek”. The Kills At Night Creek named was proposed by the Fort Belknap Community Council to honor Theresa “Kills At Night” Lamebull (1896-2007).
Alfreda Drabbs, who loves kittens and sweet potatoes and ham, was a County Superintendent of Schools and a quilt maker before she retired. Among her favorites are the 4th of July in Hinsdale, the All School Reunion and whatever school song is playing.
The weather and conditions were such that on January 2, Tom Niebur was combining on the Wagner road.
Two women from Florida were apprehended and taken into custody when their car broke down by the Sleeping Buffalo and needed help. A MHP Trooper had responded to the report of them walking and after investigating, it was discovered the two had illegal drugs and paraphernalia in their possession. They both pleaded not guilty and a court date was set for February 24th.
The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers are now 8-1 after defeating Scobey and Nashua over the weekend.
It came down to the last second shot from Malta Mustang Nate Costin. With all 12 of his points in the quarter, including a big trey with 27 seconds to go. It was up, and a thing of beauty, spinning in and out of the rim around twice before it ultimately bounced out. With the missed shot went the game, 64-60.
Still early in the season the Saco-Whitewater boys’ basketball season and defeated Nashua on Friday night, then lost to the Scobey Spartans 50-29.
Hailey Nicholson put together 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the game against the Rocky Boy Lady Northern Stars.
Dre Oshio, Marianna Drabbles and Dillon Wright were shown building a snow fort outside the Malta Elementary School. Snow + kids = FUN!
For over 100 years the Waters family has gathered on Christmas Eve and this year over 40 descendants fathered at the Senior Citizen Center for good, fun and fellowship.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Green were honored at a 25th anniversary open house at the Malta Lutheran Church, hosted by their five children and grandson.
Mayor Byron Ereaux administered the oath of office to incumbent councilman Bill Crowder and newly elected councilmember Warren O.J. Abrahamson.
A Washington couple, Pr. Pat Hense and his wife, Dee, arrived in the community and plan to open a home for troubled youth at a ranch they purchased in the Harb community from George and Elizabeth Brown.
Junior Lance Spencer was Malta’s only champion wrestler at the Cut Bank Invitational. He wrestles in the 189 pound weight class. Two time state champion Kris LaBrie had to settle for second place in the meet at 135 pounds. He lost a 3-2 decision in the last 25 seconds of the match to the two-time defending champion from Columbia Falls, Keri Stanley.
The First State Bank re-elected all of the board of director members at its annual meeting: Ted Kelly, Jim Sandness, Norman Dyrdahl, Lee Robinson, Ron Scott, Carroll Ereaux, Don Cole, Jim Caves and Gene Mendel.
The Malta Mustangs passed a “test of character” as they took on the league favorite Wolf Point Wolves, battled them point for point much of the game, and came away with a 65-60 conference victory.
As expected it was a barn-burner when the Whitewater boys’ basketball team took on Saco in the Penguin gym. The Panthers edged Whitewater 56-42 for the victory.
The Sheriff’s Office received a report of criminal mischief in Saco at the laundromat. It appeared someone attempted to break into the change box on one of the machines. No estimate was available on damages. *breaking into a laundromat…that’s kind of a “dirty” job.

Last rites for Kenneth P. Murray who had passed away on Dec. 22 were held of Dec. 27th. W.E. Southwick sang a special request “Three Bells” which was a favorite of Murray’s, with Mabel Flesche on the organ.
Don Cole, who became Phillips County attorney on Jan. 1, has issued a policy on fraudulent checks. There is a form available for individuals to file if a check is fraudulent, and five days’ notice is given to the check writer to make the check good. After five days the check writer will be arrested. It is then up to the Justice of the Peace to decide whether the writer gets a jail sentence, a fine, or both. There are no exceptions. Anyone who doesn’t pay will be prosecuted.
Coach Glenn Flatt reports that the Malta team took it on the chin twice with loses to Cutbank 40-15 and Choteau 41-18. Wins in Choteau came from Chris Barthelmess, Doug Paulson, Pete Lumsden and Mike Ereaux. Wins at the Cut Bank match came from Doug Siegle, Stan Davis and Pete Lumsden.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Cebulski invite family and friends to an open house to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
At a boxing bout at Ft. Belknap the wins came from Larry Smith, Delmar Henry, Doug Simanton, Dirk Henry and Dexter Henry. Mike Hammar fighting his first fight, not being one to start at the bottom, the coaches said he insisted on fighting Tony White Mountain, a veteran of 26 ring fights, and was TKO’d.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Siewing celebrated their 25th anniversary with an open house at the Saco Lutheran Church hosted by their children. There was entertainment provided into poems read, an accordion solo, and a duet. There was also a mock wedding and a dance followed at the Masonic hall.
Statistics show that marriages were way down and divorces up as reported from the Clerk of Court. There were 33 marriages compared to 55 divorces in 1974. There were 58 births and 45 deaths, 59 probates, 79 civil cases, nine criminal actions and 4 juvenile cases.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pancake announce the engagement of their daughter, Linda, to Bruce Hould, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Hould; a June 7 wedding is planned.
Debbie Maxie and Michael Hammond were married in a double ring ceremony at the Malta Lutheran Church.

With one polling place yet to be heard from, it looked like the Malta high school bond election failed validation because of the required percentage of electors did not go to the polls.
Miss Lillian Grimsley modeled her wool dress for a first place victory in the junior division of the “Make It Yourself With Wool” contest in Missoula. Her entry was a sheer white evening dress of soft wool and an evening wrap of Angora and sheep wool.
Malta dropped one to its traditional enemy, Wolf Point, on the local floor last Sat. night. The score was 60-34. Wolf Point turned loose a couple of the sharp shooting forwards for which the Wolves have been famous for many years, and the locals could not match shots with them.

A jubilant city of Malta had heard the news that the government had at last called for bids on the construction of Sherburne Lake dam and 23 miles of canal which would lead irrigation water to Milk River.
