Over 20 Wrestlers Competing This Season

The 2024-25 Malta/Whitewater Wrestling Team features 21 boys and four girls this season.

The Malta wrestlers are led by Boys Head Coach Jake French, and his assistant coaches Shawn Gilkerson and Nolan Simanton, as well Girls Head Coach Steve French and his assistant coaches Trey Simanton and Oden Hallock.

The team has plenty of returning talent from last season, including senior Kohner Schipman, who won the State B-C 138 Title last year.

Schipman, who is listed to wrestle at 144, is joined by fellow seniors Lane Salveson who will wrestle at 157, Jonah Bucks who will wrestle at 127, and senior Ava Hansen, a state performer last year that will wrestle in the girls 170 class.

Junior Trooper Stiles placed sixth in the 138 class at state last season and will wrestle in the 144 class this season.

The junior class also includes Shaylee Hines who will wrestle in the girls 155 class, Sommer Green who will wrestle in the girls 190 class, Landon Retan who will wrestle in the boys 190 class, returning state performer Straud Sims who will wrestle in the 175 class, Rylee Brusse who will wrestle in the 165 class, and Karson Kelsey who will wrestle at 144.

The sophomore class consists of Carly Mears who will wrestle in the girls 135 class. Alex Martian will wrestle in the boys 126 class, Kayden Green will wrestle in the 190 class, Kenan LaBrie will wrestle in the 190 class, and Skylar Gilkerson will wrestle in the 215 weight class.

The freshman consists of returning state performer Lance Spencer who will wrestle at 138 pounds, Silas Young who will also wrestle at 138, and Steeler Blunt who will wrestle at 144.

Freshmen Zander Fuller, Trevor Knowles, and Michael Love will be wrestling in the heavyweight class.

The team welcomes a few eighth graders; Kolby Wright at 103, Hayden Moore-Hicks at 126, and Corby Mears at 157.
