Lady Mavericks Basketball 2024-25

Lady Mavs Start Season 8-0

The North Country Lady Mavericks may have a new look given they graduated a couple of the top athletes in Class C basketball last spring, but this year's group already boasts a 8-0 record.

The Lady Mavericks have not lost a game since March 11 of 2022, and are on a 59-game win streak.

This year's group will be without Teagan Erickson and Paige Wasson who are both playing collegiate basketball this season; Erickson is a member of the Montana State University Women's Basketball team and Wasson a member of the Rocky Mountain College Women's Basketball Team.

They will also be without Kendall Scheffelmear, Josie Brown, Ava Hanley and Zora Holt, who also all graduated last spring.

Despite missing a ton of fire-power from last season, the team is finding ways to win.

Coach Amber Erickson was asked about this year's group of Lady Mavericks.

I would say that we're still kind of trying to find an offensive flow," Coach Erickson said. "You know, our seniors last year, especially Paige and Teagan, just created a lot not only for themselves, but for other people, so they were very good facilitators. So, these guys are now realizing it doesn't come as easy. Points come a little bit harder and they have to score from a different perspective by making good moves, but our defense is still solid."

This year's senior class consists of Shelbi LaBrie and Berkley Hillman. LaBrie was a member of the All-Conference team and Defensive Team last season.

The team's junior class consists of Kennedy Simonson, CharLee McColly, BaiLee McColly, Kodi McColly, and Lyli Bear.

Emerson Downing is the team's lone sophomore.

The freshmen class consists of Gracie Wasson and Izzy Jones.

The eighth graders on the team are Reese Bowman, Ainsley Erickson, and Jersey Sallee/Cornwell.

Longtime head coach is joined by assistant coaches Char Wasson, Shon Simonson, and Heidi McColly.

The Lady Mavs first two wins of the 2025 calendar year came last weekend as they defeated the Circle Wildcats 47-41 on Friday, January 3, and the Turner Tornadoes 42-24 in Whitewater on Saturday, January 4.

LaBrie was asked about the team's key to victory against Turner.

"Working hard and trying to do the little things right," LaBrie said.

Though the team won, they weren't very happy with how they played.

"Especially in the second half," Coach Erickson said. "We just got a little bit complacent, but we also went on the road and got a really tough conference win in Circle. Tonight, we had a lot of open looks, we just didn't knock our shots down."

The Lady Mavericks were led by Downing who scored 11 points and had three steals.

LaBrie had 10 points, five assists, two assists, and two steals. B. McColly had eight points, five steals, three rebounds, and one block. K. McColly had five points and three rebounds. G. Wasson had two points, five assists, and two steals. Simonson had two points. Hillman had two points. Bear had two points.

The night also served as Whitewater's senior night. LaBrie was honored and she was asked how it felt to pick up a win in her hometown.

"Well, it's really neat, because I only get two games a year in Whitewater," LaBrie said. "So this being my second to last game in Whitewater and stuff. And it being my senior night, all my family was here."

In North Country's win over Circle, the team was led by LaBrie who had 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Downing had 11 points. B. McColly had 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Wasson had five points, three rebounds, and two steals. C. McColly had five points and four rebounds. K. McColly had two points.

LaBrie said that the team worked on boxing out, getting their hands up, and closing out on shooters during Winter Break.
