District Judge John McKeon swore in the newly elected or re-elected county personnel including Justice of the Peace (Gayle Stahl), Richard Dunbar (Commissioner), Jean Mavencamp (Co. Treasurer/Assessor), Lorraine Hellie (Dep. Treasurer/Assessor), Scott Moran (Co. Sheriff), Lori Lundstrom (Dep. Clerk & Recorder), Burt Peigneux (Undersheriff), Ed Amestoy (Co. Atty) and Dan O’Brien (Dep. Co. Atty). Not pictured were Vivian Taylor (Co. Supt. of Schools) and Marian Ereaux (Clerk & Recorder).

Fire Chief Bill Rock informed the Malta City Council that he would be retiring after 32 years of serving in the position.

Shining in the Sr. Spotlight this week is Dwayne Simanton. He openly admits his favorite hobby is harassing people. The meal at noon is his favorite, and before retirement he was the owner/operator of the Malta Mercantile before he retired and started taking naps on top of Maytag Appliances. Some of his favorites include “Amazing Grace” and “Gone with the Wind.”

Up until the second half of their game against the Nashua Porcupines, the Dodson Coyotes basketball boys had been kept quiet on the few scoreboards they have seen this season. Though the Coyotes lost 67-36, they put up a great effort scoring 29 points in the second half.

The Dodson Lady Coyotes came out of the gate and took lead, never looking back. They defeated the Nashua Porcupines 65-49.

With a couple of losses last weekend, the Malta Mustangs are experiencing a few growing pains and a lack of leadership. They lost 52-42 to Wolf Point and 53-46 to Havre. Coach Costin said, “We had a total lack of leadership out there.”

The Christmas Scrip loan program loaned out was 15-17% lower than the 15 year average, however $255,410 was still spent at local businesses, according to Scrip Chairman Don Nevrivy.

Anthony Perry was named to Jamestown College Fall Semester Dean’s list. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Perry, he earned a 4.00 grade point average.

Dustin Lundstrom and Tess Lundstrom were chosen to reign over the annual Malta High School Snowball.

Dakota Taylor of Whitewater was a hit as the Millennial Baby of the Year 2000 New Year’s Eve Bash held at the City Hall.

County Commissioner Chairman Francis Jacobs administered the oath of office Monday to Sheriff Tom Miller, Undersheriff Steve Kirkegard and new deputy Alan Guderjahn.

A former Malta alumnus, Gregg Wasson, and veteran girls’ basketball coach Del Fried were voted “Coach of the Year” in their respective fall sports, by the Montana Coaches Association.

The Malta City Council voted to contract with the state for service after city building inspector John Demarais told the council he didn’t feel qualified to inspect commercial buildings because of the complexity of building code requirements.

Malta High School graduate Brandon Millican is a member of the nationally-ranked Montana State Cheering team which left for four days of competition in Orlando, Florida for the FCA National Finals.

LaRae Helm was the Phillips County Medical Center Employee of the Quarter. She has been an employee for 13 years.

Mrs. Katherine Watson, Phillips County Treasurer, was shown displaying the new Montana motor vehicle license plates which went on sale on Jan. 2; they are bright blue with off-white numbers. As of Dec. 30th a total of 2,740 passenger car licenses, 2,748 truck and 367 motorcycle licenses had been issued for 1974.

Funeral services for Henry Kittelson, 58, were held Monday at the Bell Funeral Home. Kittelson had died at the local hospital on Dec. 27th. He served in WWII and had worked for Howard Smith for 20 years. Music was provided by Mrs. Mabel Flesche, organist, and Mrs. Lorna Pray, who sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Wrestling Coach Glenn Flatt and wrestlers Chris Barthelmess and Pete Lumsden will part of a northeast Montana team that will wrestle a Japanese touring team of national champions, who are making several stops across the state. Flatt was selected as coach for the team. He has been wrestling coach since 1960 and his record is 170 dual meet wins to 54 losses through 1974.

The first bull riding school ever conducted in Malta was put on and sponsored by Jack Smith, local RCA stock producer. Twelve students attended and locals included Chris and Leo Barthelmess, Joe Anderson, David Henry, Todd Smith and Dwain Hould. Wally Badgett was the class instructor. Todd also assisted as a bullfighter and kept the bulls away from the cowboys after their dismount. “Hang on, I have not yet begun to buck” was the inner thoughts of the bulls as they made the rider’s glory a short one.

Becky Ostlund, of Wild Horse, and Gary Lundstrom of Dodson, were married in Havre. Denise Solberg was the bride’s attendant, and Don Dvorshak served as best man. Mrs. Sidney Solberg sang “More” and was accompanied by Mrs. Harold Solberg.

Beaming Aunt Jemima, the pancake artist will be in Malta Sat. practicing her art before the customers at the local Buttrey store. The hungry and the housewife who wants a better grasp of the secret of pancake making are invited to drop in and watch the Pancake Queen.

Attention is called to the flourishing condition of the First State Bank which on another page publishes its current statement, required every so often by the superintendent of Montana banks. Total assets of the institution total $5,950,346.38, with time deposits of individuals, businesses and governmental agencies running almost two million more.

The Dodson Coyotes last night grabbed two basketball victories from Malta high school. The Coyote-Mustang tilt ended in a 70-44 victory for the west county five, and in the preliminary game the Coyote Pups defeated the Mustang junior high outfit by a 20-17 score.

Malta now has a resuscitator. As the result of the recent campaign conducted by the Malta fire department the machine has been bought and paid for and is now a part of the city’s property – a valuable piece of equipment in case there is a need for artificial respiration treatment as a result of smoke, electrical shock or partial drowning.

James T. Shea of Glasgow, member of the Montana bar for 34 years, Monday was appointed by Gov. John Bonner as judge of the 17 judicial district compromising Valley and Phillips County. He replaces Judge John Hurley who resigned Friday after long service in the judicial post.

The Whitewater correspondent of the Enterprise was whooping it up for his home town. He described the metropolis as the best town in northern Phillips county, with population, five churches and no jail. It also had six “radio receiving stations” and a championship whist team. S.A. Simonson, Sam Meyers and John N. Olson were the three latest purchasers of “radio receiving stations” to make the total of six in town and were being angrily accused of trying to break up the local whish team by staying home to wear their headsets instead of defending the snoose title.

A local item said a “howling blizzard” was raging…Two notes farther along reported Dr. Clay’s departure for the Missouri River to make a professional call upon Mrs. Gallinger.

“Scotty” Main will be pleased to note that even 43 years ago there was keen local interest in Bobby Burns. An anniversary celebration was organized in Malta and guests were expected from 100 miles in each direction. Landlord Sklower was to serve a feast at the Great Northern Hotel and Dan McKay, latter known as “the county splitter,” was down for the principal oration on the Scottish bard. A bagpiper had been engaged, a highland fling was on the program and the community seemed quite agog over the event.
