Forty-three years ago in 1956 while working for the city of Malta, Bud Hasler had the misfortune of losing most of the sight in his right eye while using a pick on frozen ground to dig up a water line. A rock flew up and hit Hasler in the right eye, slicing it and he has relied totally on the vision in his left eye since. Doctors would shake their head and say “what a mess”. After a surgery on the other eye, a rare condition left him nearly blind. Following a second surgery he regained sight in the right eye. He is a firm believer in miracles.

Don’t look now, but the Dodson Coyotes are off to a 4-1 start and have a share of the early conference lead. Coach John Hunt singled out 5-10 sophomore Eddie Hawley who “had a big weekend for the Coyotes scoring 25 points (in two games), grabbing 9 rebounds and stealing the ball 13 times.

The Saco City Council presented certificates of appreciation to Walt Scoles for 34 years of service as a council member and then mayor, and to Jim Hanson for 20 years as a councilman. The certificates were presented by Mayor David Dopp.

Undersheriff Tom Miller was formally appointed sheriff by Phillips County Commissioners, he will assume the post on January 1. He replaces Gene Peigneux who resigned while he is away training for a new job.

Basketball Coach Bernie Wasser wasn’t particularly pleased with a team defense that gave up 77 points in the Fergus Eagles game. He said the team didn’t do a great job at the foul line, hitting only 44% on 8 of 18 tries. The turnovers displeased Wasser, “we’re not taking care of the ball very well.”

Santa Claus himself was on the scene to direct the Malta High School concert band last Tuesday evening. Some of the audience sat at tables lighted by candlelight. Hot wassail was served during the program. Santa Claus was a surprise to everyone including the band members, as he ran through the gymnasium distributing treats to the youngsters before taking over the duties as band director.

The high school concert choir is composed for the most part by students of the freshman and sophomore classes. A parachute backdrop is to help keep the singers’ voices from wafting away in the beams of the gymnasium. Gyms are not the ideal places for musical productions, but do accommodate the large crowd that annually attends the Christmas program.
