The North Country Maverick boys’ basketball team picked up a pair of wins to kick off their 2024-25 campaign.
The Mavericks defeated the Jordan Mustangs 52-49 in their first game of the year on Friday, December 6. They went on to defeat the Bridger Scouts 57-42 on Saturday, December 7.
The Mavericks are scheduled to play in the Lewistown Showcase, where they will play Centerville on Friday, December 13, and Roy-Winifred on Saturday, December 14.
In their win over Jordan, the Mavericks were led by Blaine Downing who had 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Jake Brown had 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Laytin Erickson had eight points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Kade Strommen had five points. Coy Bowman had three points, three rebounds, and four assists. Chase Albus had three points and four rebounds. Sam Simonson had three points and three rebounds.
Jordan outscored North Country 19-15 in the first quarter, and led 27-21 midway through the second quarter. The Mavericks went on an eight point run to take a 29-27 lead. The Mavericks went into halftime with a 32-29 lead. Their lead grew to 36-29, but the Mustangs clawed their way back and outscored the Mavs 14-9 in the third quarter. The Mavericks outscored Jordan 11-6 in the fourth quarter and won 52-49.
In North Country’s win over Bridger, the Mavericks were led by Downing, who had 32 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
Brown had eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Erickson had six points, six rebounds, and three steals. Bowman had five points and two steals. Strommen had four points, five rebounds, and two steals. Albus had two points.
North Country had 15 steals, forced 23 turnovers, and scored 20 points off of turnovers. North Country also scored 42 points in the paint, while holding Bridger to 24.
