One Nation, Under God
The 2024-2025 Voice of Democracy Contest sponsored by the VFW was offered to students in grades 9-12, and this year the local VFW Post 4067 received its first entry in many years. The program was established in 1947 and annually nearly 40,000 students compete for their share in $2.1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
The narrative to be addressed this year was "IS AMERICA TODAY OUR FOREFATHER'S VISION?" Each year a different topic is selected.
VFW Post 4067 is proud to award Sommer Green, sophomore at Whitewater High School with honor of first place. Her entry has been forwarded to the District level. From District the entries are reviewed for State winners and then submitted to National VFW, where $35,000 is available to the winning entry. Enjoy Sommer's entry:
"IS AMERICA TODAY OUR FOREFATHER'S VISION?"
Although we can't go back to the 18th century to ask the Forefathers ourselves, I am willing to bet...this is not what they had in mind. America was supposed to be a God-fearing land full of freedom, hope, gratefulness and pride. If I were to take a guess at what they envisioned, it would definitely not be this.
Today we replaced men that are willing to die for their country with men that want to be women. We replaced women that were willing to make a difference in the world with women who want to be men.
There is no drive to go out and work anymore. Instead, they rely of the government to take care of them, instead of going out and taking care of themselves. People today want to pretend that Halloween is every day and act like cats or dogs.
We were God-fearing people. Some of us still are.
But we have turned our backs to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We have lost respect for our country and the soldiers who lost their lives to get here. People have burned flags and the Bible. We care more about the people who want to change their body because they don't think they were born with the "right parts," instead of getting help for the soldiers who watched their best friends die in front of their eyes, or helping families who lost someone due to war.
The disrespect for everything American stands for has been normalized in the sporting industry. Young athletes are paid to kneel to our nation's colors and put their hands behind their back during the national anthem. Celebrities are worshiped more than Jesus Christ.
We are trillions of dollars in debt. The government is trying to get our guns because "not everybody should own one." The Forefathers probably imagined that we knew how to use that and we wouldn't abuse that privilege in any way.
We dumped tea in Boston because Britain was taxing us. Today we are hypocrites for doing that because we now are taxing our people. America is all about keeping everyone safe but yet they are trying to take down the borders and let in illegal immigrants. These illegal immigrants are also trying to bring in stuff that is even more illegal than them...drugs. This country has been brainwashed on what is right and what is wrong.
We would like to think that we aren't like sheep and can be easily controlled and manipulated easily, but when we had the COVID outbreak and the CDC announced the outbreak and the government made it a requirement to wear mask, we were all wearing them the next day.
To sum it up I don't think our forefathers would be proud of where we are, but there is hope for the future. Myself as well as others believe very strongly in patriotism and love for God and country. If we remain steadfast, we can bring this country back to being a beacon of hope and a leader of freedom. I think that it is safe to say the forefathers believed that anything is possible.
We have made many mistakes but I truly do believe we can get this country back to the way it used to be.
Back to the way it should be.
