The Dodson School recognized Students of the Month Andrew Walling for his willingness to learn and a great attitude; and Shontell Talks Different, an eighth grader for going above and beyond what is asked of her, being self-motivated and a pleasure to have in class.

TaChante Cole and Ostin Welch were two students in Mrs. Bruce’s culinary class that was preparing food for the dinner and theatre at the Malta High School. The six course meal would be served prior to the presentation of “Beauty and the Beast” on November 25th.

Winston Mitchell, World War ll veteran, story teller, cowboy, farmer, rancher, and craftsman, was featured in the news. A talented, friendly and giving man, he was one of a kind.

Rick Mikkelson, one of the youngest tenured members of the Malta Lutheran Church, was helping share the festivities in preparing the Martin Luther Dinner. Doc Curtis said the men opted to go with Swedish meatballs, saying the usual lutefisk was being replaced because, as Mikkelson said, “The women at the church didn’t like the smell after we were done with it.”

The Malta M-ettes volleyball season ended as the Shelby Coyotes proved to be too much, defeating Malta for the second time in the tournament, giving the M-ettes third place overall.

Retiring from the Phillips County Hospital Board and Hi-Line Retirement Center were Bob Galt, Ted Kelly and Elaine Enerson. Each was given a framed painting by Saco artist, Todd Mandeville.

The new Pay ‘n Save store was taking shape with the construction of the new 8,000 square foot store.

Malta would be welcoming girls’ basketball 3C Tournament fans this weekend, from Dodson, Whitewater, Nashua, Hinsdale, Frazer, Opheim and Saco.

Two Dodson youngsters made a name for themselves at the Junior Olympics held in Big Timber. Phillip DeCelles, 11, ran to a first place finish in his age group. Paul Warren, 11, placed fifth in the same age group. The race was over a 2.5 mile course.

Members of the Malta Barracks of the Veterans of World War 1 gathered for dinner at noon on Veterans Day. Present were Mathias Martinez, Joe Holzhey, Archie Carberry, Hans Jensen, B.I. Anderson, Louis Knable, Ernest Freestone, Oscar Rockstad of Havre, Tom Kelly, Arthur Ulness, Harry Austin, Sr., Fern Taylor, Ingolf Hagen, Paul Daellenbach, Mikel Perraut, Byron Bebee, J. O. Nelson, N. J. Cummings, Dan DePuydt, Lee Schumacher, Shaw Andrews, Swen Carlberg of Fairview, George Koechel, Earl O’Brien, Harry Hanlin and Ted Didier.

William Barnard, after 43 years of serving as the National Weather Service weather observer, and with failing eye sight at the age of 91, retired. The day the station was closed, he then covered five miles on horseback checking on cattle.

Navy Airman Recruit Ernest Marinko, of Saco, graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA.

The 1974 Malta Mustangettes began play in the Class A basketball tournament in Cut Bank. Heading out were Grace Grabofsky, Donna Mendel, Reene McKeon, Karen Kangas, Sherry Green, Janice Anderson, Annie Bebee, Judy VanHoudt, Becky Grabofsky, Lori Sjostrom, Susan Mendel, Janet Baeth, JoAnne McKeon and Shaune Ereaux.

Mrs. Hans Jensen, chaplain of the VFW Auxiliary, and Mathias Martinez, junior vice commander of the VFW, unveiled the monument dedicated to those from Phillips County, who gave their lives for their country in World War 1. Unveiled on Armistice Day, Commander Byron Bebee, gave a short address. A firing squad fired salute and Taps was played by two members of the Malta High School band.

Rev. Joel Nelson announced he was resigning from the Malta, Dodson, Whitewater and Loring churches to accept a call to the Lord of Love Church in Belton, MO.

Two Fort Belknap residents were wounded by rifle fire in a fracas at the Cowboy Bar in Dodson early Sunday morning. Harold Main and Daniel Long Fox were each shot once but the wounds were not serious.

Friends and family gathered and surprised Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Compton with a 25th wedding anniversary celebration.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Craig Ottinger of Billings; she weighed nine pounds and three ounces and has been named Rhonda Marie.

Nov. 10, 1949

The Hitz Construction Co. of Billings, the successful bidders on the Malta grade school and gymnasium contracts started this week. Chet Comstock, general superintendent for the company, said the work on the $278,733 general construction will progress as rapidly as possible.

The predatory members of the cat family who roam Phillips County have been having a rough time of it the last couple weeks. Three of them have been killed by local hunters who started out after pheasants and ended up with a bobcat or lynx in the bag. Francis Schwartz killed one Sunday. Walter Lodmell brought down a cat on Sunday; Herb Friede, local game warden, said this cat was most probably a lynx. On opening day of pheasant season, Paul Skinner killed a cat on Whitewater creek. Friede stored the body of Skinner’s cat on ice for a week and then shipped it to a college where it is to be used by students in zoology to study bone structure and anatomy of the animal.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Peigneux on Nov. 3.

ROLL CALL of the Military: Carl W. Bell was born May 23, 1924, and graduated from Malta High School, Class of 1943. He left for naval training two days later. After serving in the South Pacific he was discharged Dec. 9, 1945. He then joined the Guards and was a PRO officer; he is married and has two children. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Bell.

Clarence Mikkelson, one of the “Old Guard” had enlisted with Co. D. 116 QM in November, 1938, and left them when they were inducted into federal service in Sept., 1940. Born in Malta, he attended high school with the class of 1938. He served on the USS Holbrook and was in Australia. He came home 30 months later without the Purple Heart but with four campaign ribbons, four battle stars and a bronze arrowhead in Sept. 1945. He enlisted in the new National Guard in July 1947. He is married and has one son.

The Mustang basketball season will see action against Scobey, Wolf Point, Plentywood, Fairview, Baker, Circle and Ekalaka, as part of the eastern division.

Patents were waiting at the Glasgow land office for the following homesteaders who had proved up on their farms: William Bousseau, Fay Westman, Henry Knopfle, Gus Tank, Germain Cookingham, Kalle Kangas and Alfred Blunt.

Fred Robinson of the Malta Auto company reported that his firm had to replace a large number of Ford radiators due to the unwary owners who had let their cars freeze up in a recent cold snap.

The town of Dodson was jubilant over prospective boom. B.D. Phillips was reported as ready to build a $15,000 hotel and there was talk of building a road to the Little Rockies which would make Dodson the principal shipping point from the mountains.

The big farm news of the week was the unloading of a pony threshing outfit destined for the UL ranch, “where a little farming is being done.”.
