The annual Chamber of Commerce and Merchant Committee Parade of Lights Harvest Fest will be Thursday night. Christmas Scrip money will be available at all three banks to start the season. The Parade of Lights entrees will lineup at the Hi-Line Retirement Center and the parade begins at 7 p.m.; also, the Cattle Women will be having an open house from 6-8 p.m., offering taste testing of crockpot recipes using beef.

Dollyann Willcutt, representing the PEO Organization, presented Catherine McMahon a $500 check for expenses to visit Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri.

RJ Taylor, a former Malta Mustangs football standout, has been starting left cornerback for the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears. “My favorite part about playing for Malta, is just Malta’s tradition. Sports are just what everybody lives for over there, so just being a part of any sport program that says Malta Mustangs is a pretty big deal,” said Taylor.

The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire tied for second in 3-C volleyball with the Lustre Christian Lady Lions in Saco.

Featured in the Senior Spotlight is Gloria Taylor, who states her favorite animal is a horse and her favorite meal is fried chicken. Her favorite holiday is Christmas and when asked what she did before retirement, she answered, “Everything.” Black Beauty, The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie are among her favorite tv shows and she has a unique/unusual hobby of “peeling potatoes.”

Local banks have taken extensive measures to make sure the Y2K bug doesn’t bite them when the clock strikes midnight at the dawn of the year 2000. But customers should also be wary of scam artists waiting to prey on anyone caught up in the Y2K hysteria.

Malta city government received $62,200 in revenue from taxes paid on gambling machine income in the fiscal year 1999. The total is $11,700 less than 1998’s earnings of $73,900, but still accounts for over 12 percent of the city’s general fund budget.

Dodson School released the 1st quarter honor toll and listed were: Grade 12: Zane Gray 96.20, Julia Puhrer 96.29; Grade 11: Jaci Hawley, 96.43, Tracie Overberg, 97.88; and Grade 9: Canden Wilke, 97.29.

Investigation is continuing into the Oct. 20 single-vehicle crash which killed two men and injured two other persons. Hundreds attended separate funeral services held Monday for the two men, Christopher Matthews, 19, and Gabe Brown, 17, both of Malta.

Raelynn Dolphay Jones, 22, who was flown to a burn center in Salt Lake City following the accident has undergone surgery to repair an internal injury and has begun skin grafting treatments; she was burned over 40-50 percent of her body when the vehicle overturned and caught on fire.

Pat McCorkle, 17, suffered several broken bones and was taken to Billings for treatment; he has since returned home.

A Malta man has pleaded guilty to theft and Medicaid fraud and has paid $13,125 in restitution to the state Medicaid program. Daniel Hellyer pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of Medicaid fraud, as part of a plea agreement filed in Helena District Court. The state agreed to dismiss a second count of Medicaid fraud.

Tattoo artist Heather Jenkins has set up shop on an appointment-only basis at Avante Salon in Malta. Jenkins advises prospective clients to be wary of tattoo artists who use the word “oops” too much since tattoos are permanent; think seriously before committing to a tattoo since “it’s going to be there forever.”

The Malta Planning/Zoning Board tabled a request from Ken and Lona Ulrich for a conditional use permit to construct a mortuary on two lots along the north side of the old high school/junior high site in Malta.

J.J. Smith is one of those fellows who could get along just fine in life with only a set of initials. Say the words “J.J.” and everyone in Phillips County, pretty much, and in a lot of other places, too, knows exactly whom you’re talking about. Like the Missouri Breaks, J.J. Smith is a part of Phillips County landscape. At 78, he still makes a living buying and selling cattle. He has turned to a reflective mood and has become J.J. the writer.

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Noreen of Cut Bank announce the engagement of their daughter, Charlene to Trevor Wasson, son of Alan and Connie Wasson of Loring. A January 8, 2000, wedding is planned in Havre.

Oct. 31, 1974

A Florence woman was lost in the Sun Prairie area for several hours before being found. Mrs. Bruce Maclay was on a hunting expedition with her husband and two sons and friends from Missoula. She took a shovel and wandered off to search for fossils. Bill Spencer called the sheriff’s office and reported she was lost in the evening. Neighbors, the Sheriff’s Posse and office personnel helped in the search. Gene Barnard, area rancher, found her about 4 a.m. when he checked in a camper that had been left in the area by game warden Dennis Rush.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dick Cosgrave of Billings and has been named Addie Loraine. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Guttormson are the maternal grandparents.

John McKeon and Donald Molloy are among 61 University of Montana graduates to receive scholarships. McKeon received the Burton K. Wheeler Scholarship, Washington, D.C.; Molloy received the Max P. Kuhr Memorial Scholarship, Havre.

Two out-of-state hunters were hospitalized in Malta for injuries received in an accident Saturday. The driver received a broken leg and he and his passenger both received facial cuts. The vehicle was totaled.

In a second accident, a car overturned on the Whitewater-Loring cutoff road, and there were no injuries.

Two girls escaped injury Tuesday afternoon, 17.1 miles southeast of Malta in a car driven by Dianna Anderson; her sister Eva, was a passenger. The car rolled over on its top and both girls received scrapes and bruises but were not hospitalized.

Marine Pvt. Ronald Tuma, graduated from recruit training at the Marine Corps Depot, San Diego.

A son was born to Mrs. Dwayne Simanton and a daughter was born to Mrs. Warren Taylor.

The Cootiette Club 427 elected new officers at the Tuesday meeting. Elected were Barbara Miller, chief greyback; Helen Harris, lady louse; Beulah Mikkelson, baby louse; Liz Brud, shekel keeper; Etta Cummings, scratches; Ethel O’Brian, crummy chaser; Ramona Jernigan, louse hunter; Frances Myron, pios louse; Patricia Marth, rustling louse; and Romanie Larson, ink slinging louse.

Following is the list of winners in the races and events in Malta’s first gymkhana held Oct. 16th.

Walk, trot, run: Ray Barrett, Mervin Bishop; Shetland pony: Arlyn Simms, Jack Contway, Wayne Fox. Men over 50: W. E. Simms, Jim Kipp, Ray France. Saddle: Ray Barrett, Ray France, Art Koomis. Ladies three-eighths mile: Shirley Orr, Fern Oxarart and Kathryn Elliott. Rescue race: Marjorie and Hubert Simms. Jackpot roping: Jim Kipp, Jim Salsberry. Quarter mile women’s: Fern Oxarart, Irene Nitz, Shirley Orr.

A central pool of liquid goo, surrounded by slippery expanses of soggy grass and ice slush, furnished the setting for a Mustang gridiron defeat by the Scobey Spartans in the first home game of the season. Twenty-two players wrestled in the slop for two hours, and because the heavier Scobey boys wrestled a little harder, the visitors won 20-6.

Advancing years brought retirement to one of Malta’s most respected citizens last week as Philip Perry sold out the shoe repairing business he has operated here for the past 35 years. He filed a claim on what is the George Lundman place. He and his wife had eight children of ten still living. A daughter, Estorina, is now Mrs. Victor Puckett, and a son Louie, both living in Malta, Tony lives in Chinook, and Philip lives in Saco.

ROLL CALL of the MILITARY: Robert Pewonka, born in Saco, he attended high school in Malta. He received basic training at Ft. Ord, Calif. In October 1943, he went overseas and started piling up a reputation of being a mean individual with a “firestick” or flamethrower. At one time he was credited with destroying 14 Japanese pillboxes. They nearly got him in the end (?) though, says Bob, and he was wounded on three different occasions so that he not only wears the Purple Heart but has two clusters to go with it.

Better known as “Figi” to his buddies is Grant Cruikshank. He was born in Malta in 1919, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Cruikshank, and attended school here. Grant went overseas in 1943 and earned six ribbons and four stars in the Pacific area.

Horse barns at the Dodson fairgrounds were destroyed by fire, allegedly by tramps who used the building for camping purposes. The loss was estimated at $1,000.

The auto license business had been turned over to the game wardens in counties which had game wardens, and hereafter the sheriff’s office was to be assisted by the wardens in seeing that all cars had license plates. “Daddy” Minugh, local game warden had already uncovered a couple of malefactors who were driving cars in 1924 with 1922 plates. (Strangely enough, it’s still open season on motorists.)

There was local rejoicing among stockmen because of one individual out of a shipment of steers had brought “close to $100.”

Fred Wilson was reported as hauling lumber out to his ranch. He refused to divulge the purpose for which the material was to be used, so the Enterprise hazarded a guess that he was going to build a new house “and get someone to manage it, too.”
