Penguins in Harlem, Two Heading to State

The Whitewater Penguins headed to the Harlem Golf Course on Friday, October 18th. It was about fifty degrees with very little wind when both sets of varsity races took off. We couldn't have asked for better weather. There was great competition at this race with some of the top runners in the state for Class B and C present. Harlem's course is a great course to hit PRs at as it is very flat. It's a great confidence booster before heading to the state meet.

Tyler Scheffelmear was our first runner at about 11 AM in the boys' varsity race with 71 other runners. Tyler had a great first mile, coming in at about 6:30. The next two miles dropped off a bit but ended at 21:54 in 55th place, cutting off 2 whole minutes from his previous time in Lewistown. He hasn't been to a meet for about 3 weeks so we were pretty excited about the time cut. This was a PR for Tyler and a great way to end his regular season before we head to the state meet.

The girls' race followed, with Shelbi LaBrie and Sommer Green racing against 36 other runners. Both girls' first miles were great. Shelbi came around the corner of mile one at 6:16 and Sommer came behind at 10:30. Shelbi was right on pace at the halfway point and Sommer had fallen off by about 30 seconds. Both girls finished strong. Shelbi ended with a time of 19:29 in 1st place for varsity, and 2nd place overall. This time beat her PR by three seconds, one that she had been trying to beat for two years now. Sommer ended with a time of 35:07 in 38th place. She wasn't happy with her time but she has had many great accomplishments throughout this season and we are hopeful to get her to the state meet next year in 2025.

We are excited to be bringing two penguins to the State Cross Country meet in Missoula, Shelbi LaBrie and Tyler Scheffelmear. We are looking to cut time and beat personal goals for the year. We want to wish all of our local athletes the best of luck this upcoming weekend!
