Drawing from her own personal experience, Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire volleyball player Alanna Malmend told her teammates they have to stay positive to improve. She is helping at her school to put a stop to a very important issue…bullying. “I felt like I needed to let them know,” she said. “I told my story because I went through a lot.”

Malta Coach Nick Oxarart’s football team has a history with Cut Bank, since 2016 they outscored the Wolves 399-58. Tonight was another story, as the Wolves ended up winning 32-15.

In the volleyball game against Harlem, Kaycee Howard often wins battles against them in receiving their serves. “To me, passing is real important because it starts off the set for a really good hit or dump.” Teammate Kaitlyn Smith served up 7 points in sets, even though she is only 5’7” Smith is one of the smaller hitters on the team, however, she packed quite a punch. She said, “I’ve always been able to jump well.” When the PCN asked her if she could jump over a bus, she confidently said yes.

The American Legion Auxiliary elected Krista Fahlgren as their new President, and Carolyn Schmoeckel as the Secretary-Treasurer. The out-going president is Janice Parsley.

The Senior in the spotlight is Karen Shyface, who is an avid Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard fan. Her favorites are fried chicken legs and cream corn, and she enjoys Christmas and Thanksgiving. Asked what she did before retirement, she said, “Cleaned houses and washed clothes!”

Dodson September Students of the Month are Alex Werk, son of Tricia Werk and Treyten Stiffarm, son of Lyle and Francine Stiffarm. Alex was selected for being a good role model and helping younger and new kids. Treyten has proved to be a hard worker with a positive attitude and is an inspiration.

Coach Del Fried’s M-ettes cruised by the Fergus Lady Eagles 69-58. Malta led through the entire game, they cut down the turnovers to eight while Fergus coughed up the ball 20 times, making for many easy Malta scores.

“Street Talk” question of the week, “What would you like to see happen for the new century coming in on January 1,” was answered by Delmar LaBrie. He said, “I think people should get together, like this Country Folks Holiday, and visit. Something on that order.”

Matt Mangis finished first in the average in the bareback competition after winning the event in two rodeos held Sunday at the Hi-Line High School Rodeo at the Milk River Pavilion. Mangis recorded scores of 64 to win both events.

Brad Marshall of Saco picked up a first place in the calf roping with a time of 14.36.

Cody Anderson of Malta recorded a score of 51 to place second in the saddle bronc event at the first rodeo but had no score in the second rodeo.

Katey Ereaux failed to place in the barrel racing or goat tying.

The North Bench Trail Blazers welcomed four new members: Zach Crasco, Mike Crasco, Garret Messerly and Lara Sunday. Officers elected were Brianna Losey, president; Deena Schlablegger, vice president; Catherine Warren, secretary; Emily Field, reporter; Zach Crasco, recreation leader; and Garret Messerly, flag bearer.

The Malta Mustang JV football team squad closed out the season with a 6-1 record after posting victories over Lewistown and Glasgow.

Oct. 10, 1974

Members of the sixth-grade class enjoyed a Mexican dinner as part of their study of Mexico. The Home Ec III class, under the direction of Mrs. Vaughn Schumacher, prepared tacos, enchiladas, and Mexican wedding cake. Enjoying the meal were Alice Mendel, Darlene Itcaina, Kelly Clausen, Paul Crowed and Jamie Sintler. Their student host was Karen Kovach.

No Santa Claus? The Phillips County Saddle Club may have to discontinue the annual visit of Santa Claus in Malta unless they can find another civic organization to help with the expense of the project. The cost of candy and peanuts has risen so much in the past that members feel they can no longer provide the treats without help.

Malta Boy Scouts of Troops 429 and 444 participated in a cleanup of the Zortman area in conjunction with Johnny Horizon Cleanup America month. They picked up approximately three pickup loads of litter including car bodies, lumber, trees, cans and paper. Assisting were Jim Brown, Robert Flesche, Ken Chamberlain, Brad Hicks, Pete Dalby, Ralph Golik, Dale McNamara, Ross Halvorson, Donny Ames, Ron Wombold and a guest, Tim Nelson.

“Let’s Talk Baby Talk” was held for the spring prenatal classes and the new moms brought their sons and daughters together in celebration of the classes. Attending were new moms with daughters, Mrs. Bob Murphy and Kelli Ann, Mrs. Richard Beyer and Runelle. Moms with new sons attending were Mrs. Boyd Simser and Brian Erle, Mrs. Dale Slade and Drew Russell, Mrs. Mick Ridenour and Patrick John, and Mrs. Martin Waters and Dallas James.

For a change from spending the nights building floats for homecoming, the student council arranged a week of special activities. Monday evening involved a tricycle race from downtown to Trafton Park. This was followed by a bubble-blowing contest and then a hilarious pie-throwing contest. Several football players were auctioned off and got a whip cream pie thrown in their faces by the successful bidder. Tuesday night was an egg-throwing contest and tug of war; on Wednesday, there was an auction of girls to be slaves to the football players. Thursday the classes made banners to replace the floats.

Oct. 13, 1949

The Malta Mustang football team will leave Saturday morning for Plentywood for their game. Due to the cold weather, practice has been limited to signal drills and adding to the number of plays.

Dick Lievsay, Robert Flesche, Jim Goll, Jack Herdegen, Alfred Kalland, Gerald Lake, Robert Schileve, Lawrence Smith, Don Stratton and Tom Stratton are the newest members of the FFA.

The Mormonaires and the L.D.S. orchestra, a group of nine elders who are vocalists as well as instrumentalists have just completed a 5,000-mile tour of the north central states and Canada, will present a concert on Friday. A collection will be taken up and donations will go toward the hospital fund.

Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Goodfellow and son, Dick, left for Great Falls Monday where Dick is expected to have the cast removed from his leg injured two or three weeks ago in a football game.

Lloyd Tribby is working up a good reputation as Digger O’Dell as another water main break in front of the Armstrong residence (Wilkie’s) was repaired by Herman Dolphay and Lloyd last Tuesday.

People who hear a wild drumming and bugling around town at midnight on Saturday are requested to be at ease. It won’t be an invading Rooshian army, it will only be the Drum Major Del Thurber and his Great Falls Legion drum and bugle corps. They arrived in town for the American Legion convention and will be flexing their muscles for the next day’s work.

The Northeastern Montana Hereford Breeder’s Association show and sale will be preceded by the sale of four baby beeves raised by county 4-H club members. The baby beef to be auctioned include animals fed out and owned by Ray Knudson of Saco; Russell Black of Dodson and Roger Charbonneau of Wagner.

A train accident at the junction of the Loring branch near Saco resulted in the Great Northern railway tracks being tied up for about 14 hours. The branch line train pushing cars ahead of the engine ran into some cars standing on the siding, buckling seven of them into the path of the local which was passing, causing the derailment of the local engine and two cars.

Funeral services for Clarence Chilson, a resident of Landusky for many years, were held at the Bell Funeral Chapel. Pallbearers were Ralph Nelson, William Kellerman, Ed Kolczak, Walter Dooner, Raymond Williams and Charles Seaford.

City Police Court: Tommy Moulgney, arrested for drunkenness and going to Riverside cabins, entering one without permission, fined $12.50. John Bostrom, backing out on Front Street, and hitting Ted Ereaux's car, fined $5 and repair of Ereaux's car.

Luren Erdahl and Eva Chanlund were married at the First Avenue Hotel by Rev. A.B. Cornelson. They plan to make their home on the groom’s farm east of Malta.

Harry Lyden had moved his family back to Malta after a year of living in Washington. He re-opened his studio in the band building here.

Walter Risen had delivered 900 lambs weighing 65 pounds to a buyer here. We presume this was prior to the beginning of the Kropp-Risen feud which has been going on lately.

Thomas Carter had sold three lode claims to the Ruby mine in Zortman for $25,000.

Twenty-five duck hunters from Butte came up to Bowdoin Lake and “made a killing”…if they got their limit of 25 which was in effect then, they killed quite a few ducks.

Miss Grace McGregor was thrown from a horse at the Missoula fair, and quite seriously injured.
