Now 6-0, The Mustangs to Face Wolves in Wolf Point

The Malta Mustangs football team picked up a 37-0 victory over the Conrad Cowboys despite wind gusts reaching 62 mph, and a constant wind speed of 40 mph last Friday, October 4.

Malta head Coach Nick Oxarart was asked about the victory after the game.

"The key to the victory in Conrad was our defense slowing down a very strong rushing attack," Coach Oxarart said. "Conrad was a big physical team that has been pushing other teams around with their size and strength."

The win makes Malta 6-0 this season and gave the team their second conference win of the season.

"I'm extremely proud of the leadership our upperclassmen have shown," Coach Oxarart said. "They have worked hard in the offseason and have stayed hungry week in and week out. They have responded well to any changes or additions we have made and they want to be coached and want to improve day by day. They are a blast to coach and we will continue working hard and improving week by week."

The Mustangs, who are currently ranked #1 in Class B will face the Wolf Point Wolves on Friday, October 11, in Wolf Point.

The Wolves defeated the Roundup Panthers 34-0 last Friday and are 2-5 this season.

In Malta's win over Conrad, the team was led by senior quarterback Stockton Oxarart who was 10-for-14 for 161 yards and two touchdown passes. He also had a rushing touchdown and 36 yards on seven carries.

Senior Blaine Downing led the rushing attack with 96 yards on seven carries. Senior Treyton Wilke had 31 yards and one touchdown on three carries.

"Our offense did a great job of responding to extremely windy conditions," Coach Oxarart said. "We were still able to have a balanced rushing and passing attack despite the conditions. Our special teams got us on the board quickly with an 87 yard kick return by Blaine Downing. Our kick return team executed some great blocks and Blaine utilized his speed and strength and got us the quick start we were hoping for."

Junior Dawson Hammond had three catches for 60 yards including a 40-yard touchdown. Mason Simanton had three catches for 36 yards and a touchdown. Wilke had two catches for 28 yards. Junior Trooper Stiles had two catches for 28 yards. Downing had one catch for 11 yards.

Defensively, Downing had 10 tackles, three TFL, and two sacks. Junior Landon Retan had 10 tackes (1 TFL). Simanton had eight tackles (2 TFL), sophomore Kenan LaBrie had six tackles (1 TFL).

"Our defense did a great job playing strong fundamental football and getting some big stops when we needed them," Coach Oxarart said.

Retan had six kickoffs for 305, an average of 50.8 yards, and three touchbacks. He made his only point after try attempt.
