Mustangs Outpace Scotties 48-26

The Malta Mustangs football team is now 5-0 after posting a 48-26 won over the Glasgow Scotties at Mustang Field last Friday, September 27.

"It feels good," Mustang senior Treyton Wilke told the PCN. "We're on a kind of revenge tour, you know? We lost to these guys last year, they threw it in our face and we came back and we showed them whose field it really is."

Malta is officially the top ranked team in Class B Football according to many social media sites around the state. Malta senior quarterback Stockton Oxarart was asked about the win.

"It feels great," Oxarart said. "I just think we own the conference now. Let's just keep winning the next four conference games and then we're heading into the playoffs."

The Mustangs will head to Conrad to face the Cowboys on Friday, October 4, at 7 p.m. Conrad is 3-2 this season, picking up wins against Anaconda (34-20), Park (48-13), and Fairfield (13-12). Conrad's losses were to Thompson Falls (48-45) and Florence-Carlton (41-7).

In their win over Glasgow, the Mustangs were led by senior quarterback Stockton Oxarart who completed 10-of-14 pass attempts for 231 yards and five touchdowns.

"I just know my receivers," Oxarart said. "I just know that they get open every play. My line held up tonight. It was all-around good team offense."

Three of his touchdown passes were caught by junior Trooper Stiles, who had three catches for 95 yards.

"Three touchdowns for him, that's a big night for him," Oxarart said. "He just got open and you know, I put on the money. So yeah, it's pretty sweet."

Stiles was asked about his favorite catch of the night, his second touchdown.

"I kind of dropped one right before that, so I was kind of mad at myself a little bit," Stiles said. "So I thought I better go get a different one."

Stiles was asked what it was like to haul in three touchdown catches, a feat that he hadn't done before.

"It feels good," Stiles said. "It feels like I have been waiting since I was a freshman to kind of show out on varsity and I got the chance."

Junior Dawson Hammond had two catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Senior Mason Simanton had two catches for 24 yards and a touchdown. Senior Treyton Wilke had one catch for 12 yards.

Simanton was asked about his touchdown catch, which happened late in the game.

"The line did a pretty good job blocking, Stockton had to scramble out. We just got lucky and I was able to catch the ball in the end zone."

Wilke tied Oxarart for the lead in rushing yards. Both had 47 yards, Oxarart with 12 carries and Wilke with 11 carries, one that went for a touchdown. Senior Blaine Downing had nine carries for 44 yards.

Malta's ball-carriers seemed to run a bit harder in this win.

"It's rival week, so you know slay the helmet, that's what coach said. Go out, put a hit on them and show who we are," Wilke said.

Downing also had the longest play of the game, a 83-yard kickoff return touchdown, his second of the season.

"Well, I saw a big old gap over the middle, and I just used my speed to just go through the smoke and just run into the house," Downing said.

Downing was a starter last season, when Glasgow defeated Malta 26-7.

"We definitely used that loss from last year into this year's win, and it helped give us a lot of fire to push through and so yeah, it feels good," Downing said.

Downing had a team-leading two sacks. Senior Kohner Schipman had 1.5 sacks, Simanton had 1.5 sacks, Junior Landon Retan and sophomore Kenan LaBrie were credited with a half of a sack.

Junior Straud Sims had a team-leading 12 tackles (1 TFL), Retan had 10 tackles (2 TFL), Stiles had eight tackles, Simanton had eight tackles (3 TFL), Wilke had eight tackles, Oxarart had seven tackles, Downing had seven tackles (4 TFL).
