James B. Sandsness (September 16, 1947- September 21, 2024)

James B. Sandsness 77 passed away September 21st at Saint Vincent's in Billings MT after a battle with cancer.

Jim was born September 16, 1947, in Livingston, Mont., to Henry and Hughena Sandsness of Livingston. Jim spent his younger years in Big Timber and graduated from Sweet Grass County HS in 1965. Jim went on to attend Kinman Business University in Spokane, Wash., then Billings Business College. During his career, Jim also attended the Colorado University School of Banking.

After marrying his high school sweetheart Judy Etzold, Jim began his banking career in Big Timber at Citizens Bank and Trust in 1967. Twelve years later he and the family moved to Miles City and worked at First Security Bank for one year until being recruited to work at First National Bank in Libby for the next five years. In 1985, Jim and his family moved to Malta where Jim continued his career for the next 28 years at the First State Bank; the last six as president of the bank.

Jim, Judy, and their sons embraced the community of Malta and have always considered Malta their home. Jim enjoyed being a member of Kiwanis as well as being part of the local drag strip and a founder of the annual FSB car show which has continued for the past 22 years. Jim also served on the Phillips County Hospital Board for nine years and was a member of Phillips County Crimestoppers. He was one of the first EMTs to be certified in the State of Montana.

Jim loved RVing, was an animal lover, and enjoyed spending his life with several family pets.

Jim and Judy celebrated 57 years of marriage in July before Jim passed away in September.

Jim is survived by his wife Judy and son Garth (Andre') Sandsness of Palmdale, CA; grandson Berg and granddaughter Mallory; son Greg (Anne)Sandsness of Bonney Lake, WA; granddaughter Gabrielle and grandson Nicholas; also, Jim's sister Patricia (Bruce) Johnson of Ballantine, MT. Jim is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Evelyn (Pete) Forsythe and Agnes (Armand) Johnson, as well as two nieces Lynda (Jake) Woirhaye and Melanie (Manny) Aguilar.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life is planned for a date yet to be determined.
