One Nation, Under God

Zortman's Davis Retires From USPS

On Saturday, September 14, the tiny historical town of Zortman was the place to be to partake in activities. There were several events culminating on the calendar that a good portion of the town, with a census of 69 residents, participated in.

Kathy (Bauer) Davis retired from the U.S. Postal service and folded the flag shortly before shutting down the post office on her last day as Postmistress, in the community that bears the 59546 zip code. Kathy was guest of honor at her retirement party that evening at the Zortman Community Center. Spanning a career of twelve years, the quaint office nestled in the Little Rockies has seen several postmistress's in the past. Many of the postmistresses, upon their tenure at the office have selected retire to a life of R&R (relaxation and retirement), while others merely change their routine and continue on with a busy schedule and lifestyle.

Stepping in to fill the Postmaster position is Juan Palacio, who had moved here some time ago, with his wife and family. The family moved here from Florida, so one might presume there are some changes in life styles and climates that they have encountered. The town has grown by five since their arrival.

The night of the 14th was also a gathering time to welcome the new arrival and addition to the Palacio family, with Juan and Ashley welcoming Kadian. The community had a diaper shower in conjunction with the retirement party. The young ladies in the Palacio family are Octavia and Mariana.

Great food, great visiting and new memories were part of the evening.

While bringing the community together, the retirement party and baby shower were also a time to share with the community where things are standing with the development and completion of the Community Center.

It was shared with the residents and guests attendance that the center is still in need of cupboards for the kitchen area, so if you happen to be remodeling and desire to assist with the endeavors, please contact the members of the group working on it.

The center is also in dire need of a three-basin-sink for the kitchen as well. If by chance you remodel, know where there is one, or would like to assist by purchasing one and "pay it forward," please keep the center and the groups efforts in mind.

To date, the community has been grateful and all the assistance, efforts and volunteer hours and muscles have been appreciated.

There is still work to be done, and everyone pitching in will help make the load lighter. The Zortman Community Center has so much to offer back to the community and the sooner some details are met to complete these last "to do" items, the sooner it can be a fully functioning congregational venue for the various events of the area.

As the song goes, "If I Had a Hammer", well...you might want me to just bring treats and be a gopher. Thanks for bringing new life to what could have been the target for vandals and youth feeling the need to be destructive when bored. It's a great little town sitting on the edge of a beautiful Montana mountain range that continues to shine under the quiet skies. Take a quiet drive out some day and see for yourself what is special to those who call Zortman their "home".
