County Commissioner Leslie Robinson took visiting county commissioners from various states around aboard the old Malta to Zortman Mud Wagon.

D’Andre Haag and Amanda Mummy were selected as the homecoming royalty for Malta High School.

Harry Orahood was pictured with Sam and Nellie in a memory page from Facebook. Sam and Nellie are his team of horses.

Varsity M-ette volleyball player Darby Schye brought her A game to the court when taking on the Wolf Point Wolves. She had four kills of 11 while giving Malta eight of 19 kills.

Although they were outmatched 35-0 in the football game of the Mustangs playing the Scotties, the team’s playoff hopes are still alive.

Dale McNamara stopped by the PCN to thank those who supported the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with a donation for a cure. The efforts raised over $100 million toward research for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. McNamara is a victim of ALS.

Linden Holt, a kindergartner at Tallow Creek School, recited “The Still” while waving to his old-timer neighbor to whom he dedicated his recitation.

The Saco-Hinsdale Wildfire volleyball team week started off rough with two losses. In the game against Poplar Delaney Beil had eight digs and 23 assists, and Jada Sudbrack picked up a team-high of ten aces.

Anthony Perry, a freshman at Jamestown College, will be embarking on an ambitious seven-week project to make a change for an AIDS-stricken community in Uganda, Africa.

From the MHP Trooper Report by Ralph Atchley, it was stated that the local National Guard Unit took the semi-annual physical tests of Friday night, in the dark, in the rain/snow. Everyone scored on the two-mile run, including two guys who looked suspiciously like Sgt. Pete Wiese and Sgt. Rowdy Knapp hanging on the bumper of a vehicle as it went by. Weapons qualifications went well on Saturday. SSG Marty Blundred finished with the highest score by having the most holes in the paper until John Barnard discovered he and his neighbor were shooting at the same target.

Bill and Beth Goertz of North Malta announce the engagement of their daughter, Wendy, to Kristopher Stene of Bozeman. A Dec. 11 wedding is planned in Bozeman.

Burglars helped themselves to several bottles of alcohol and cases of beer along with cartons of cigarettes in a break-in at the Hi-Way Bar in Dodson. The value of stolen goods and damages is approximately $760.

The Malta M-ette basketball team breezed through victories over the weekend, Kaydee Carnahan hit four of four three-point attempts to help win 91-41 in the game against Plentywood.

R.J. Taylor was pictured holding Siamese pumpkins joined at the stem which he and his Grandpa Bill (Crowder) raised.

Kayla Fauth and Marty Moore are the Dodson Students of the Month.

Oct. 3, 1974

James C. Canoy, Jr., of Broadus, did now show up in district court Wednesday morning for sentencing as the result of a guitar theft on Sept. 16. He is under a $2,000 bond and the bonding company will be contacted, according to County Attorney Willis McKeon.

John Richardson was installed as President of Kiwanis, Bill Smith as Secretary-treasurer, and Bob Mayer as owner. Also inducted were new members, Joe Goulet, Bill Milton, and Greg Kielb.

A Japanese firebomb, presumably dropped in the area 30 years ago during WWII, was exploded by a demolition crew from Ft. Douglas, Utah. George Robinson had found the bomb and brought it into Sheriff Pete Messerly.

The police officer finally caught up to George L. Ames, 20, after a 35-mile chase that started in Malta and down 191 South which required calling for backup from the Border Patrol and Highway Patrol. Ames hit a bridge north of the Wayne Norman south of Dodson. He was being stopped for excessive muffler noise originally and ended up with additional charges of reckless driving and failure to stop for an authorized police vehicle.

Malta High School administration announced that Arlene Green has been named a Merit Program commended student. She is among 38,000 commended students named on the basis of their high performance on the 1973 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test-National Merit Qualifying test.

The Malta Mustangs outran the Choteau Bulldogs 33-20 in Malta on Friday night.

Debra Licht, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Licht of Dodson, and Ed Peigneux, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Peigneux of Regina, were married at Bonners Ferry, Idaho, on Sept. 23. They will make their home in Malta.

In Shelby, the Mustangettes girls’ basketball team had a resounding victory over the Lady Coyotes with Janice Anderson leading with 12 points. Renee McKeon and Sherry Green each added 10 points.

Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Stanich, 81, was murdered in her home in Black Eagle on Sept. 23. Her son, John, is married to the former Helen Kovach, daughter of Mrs. Barbara Kovach and sister of John Kovach.

It was shiver me timbers and bones too, as the boiler in the Malta High School was out for the third time in seven years. There was no heat in the school for the crisp mornings, according to Supt. Jim Nordlund.

The Phillips County News owners Jim and Mary Ann Larcombe announced this week they have sold the business to two men from North Dakota. Dwight Pfiefer of Bowbells and Gerald Emerson of Mohall have taken over ownership as of October 1.

Edward Spang, a former Malta resident has been appointed Bureau of Land Management for Arizona. He is married to the former Marlene Barileach and they have two teenage children.

Sept. 29, 1949

Norval Wallace, an old-time cowpuncher and ranches of the Missouri River for many years, passed away at the Ft. Belknap Agency Hospital on Tuesday. He was born in Texas and came to Montana in 1903 with a herd of cattle for the Long X. He is buried in the local cemetery.

The trustees of the Phillips County Fair Board met and decided to enlarge the grandstand in time for the 1950 show. The financial reports show receipts of $7,966.55, however, costs were $8,139.

Not a pussy cat! It was a real “pet” bobkitten that was delivered by local game warden, Herb Friede, to Montana State College at Bozeman as the new mascot. It originated from Saco.

School District 14 will be adding a new physical education building that will also be the gymnasium with a seating capacity of 1,374 with permanent seating.

Lawrence Chezik, Vance Ramberg, Olen Munson, and Anita Sorkness left for college in Havre. James Nordlund and Robert Hoyt left for Bozeman.

Farmers in the Bowdoin region had signed up to raise sugar beets, as follows: James LeNoir, 50 acres; Joe Mayhew, 15; Henry Bowwers, 10; Henry Kelly, 10; Guy Morris, 10; and W.L. Surface, 6 acres. North Bowdoin farmers were reported ready to tackle sugar beets by dryland methods of cultivation.

Deputy treasurer Cosner had announced his staff would shortly be writing up the 1924 tax statements. The Enterprise thought it would be a fine thing if “Clarence would forget this part of his work.”

The Bear Paw Pool had loaded out a train of cattle. The next day the train was wrecked at Oswego. Some cattle were killed, and the rest were scattered all over the adjoining range.
