Hunter Rickett and Jennifer Weaver extend an invitation to the celebration of their union on Oct. 4, at quarter past three in the afternoon at the Weaver Ranch in Dodson.

Dr. Charles Wilson of Glasgow was in Malta to install new officers for the local Kiwanis Club. Officers include Terri Robinson, Rosemary Veseth, Ann Motichka and Ron Lundman.

Sharon Emond retired from the Phillips County Museum after serving nine years.

ArtSpot’s Grand Opening is slated for Thursday evening, with the owner, Kathy Bagley. Throughout the evening Judy Michael will demonstrate acrylic painting, Todd Mandeville will be doing charcoal, Kevin Campbell will create crayon art, and Randy Domire will draw with colored pencils.

Dodson School was concluding Native American Week with a Powwow, Indian Taco feed and Catcher CutsTheRope was the speaker. He concluded his speech with, “Today we are going to honor the earth, honor ourselves and have a good time.”

County Agent Marko Manoukian was recognized and received the Distinguished Service Award in Mobile, Alabama. He was recognized for his role in developing noxious weed prevention areas and the Advanced Market Beef project for youth.

M-ette spiker Riley Mortenson had four aces in the game against Saco-Hinsdale’s Varsity action; she tied with Adrianna “Abba” Bibeau.

Reeling off a 44-0 win against the Plentywood Wildcats, the Malta Mustangs had their focus set on the Glasgow Scotties who were fresh off of a 59-0 win over Harlem. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday.

The Dodson Speedway AMX would be holding the upcoming race as a benefit fundraiser for TJ Kindle, who was diagnosed with stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma.

Sept. 29, 1999

Mark French was pictured posing with the brand new Ford Contour he won in a drawing through the Central Montana Jaycees. He had bought one of the 300 tickets sold and the $110 was a darn good investment.

Old war buddies met up with each other after 53 years. Adolph Eklund of Saco and George Evans, of Troy, New York, had not seen each other since their discharge in San Antonio, Texas, from the US Army.

Carl Barnard graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Hazel Jones of San Antonio, Texas, and Richard Barnard of Saco.

Junior Stacy Solberg seemed to fly over the course at the Malta/Dodson Coulee Club Classic at Marian Hills Golf Course in Malta and placed first.

Malta lineman Lance Spencer scored the first Mustang touchdown against Chinook when he scooped up a Beeter fumble and raced it 75 yards down the sideline.

The Malta M-ettes lost a nail-biter to the Havre Blue Ponies 47-46 in overtime. Malta was plagued by poor shooting and only scoring 33 percent from the field.

In a 52-44 victory over Saco, the Whitewater Lady Penguins were only 13 of 34 from the line.

Kevin Math led the Whitewater Runnin’ Penguins to second place at the 26th Annual Frazer Invitational Cross Country meet.

Sept 26, 1974

The Malta Mustangettes started their basketball season losing to Glasgow 33-32. The girls were ahead by 11 points at the end of the third quarter and were up against full defense pressure. Coach Bill Jensen said, “They just ran out of gas.” Sherry Green and Grace Grabofsky were lost to fouls. Reene McKeon was high point scorer with 11 points.

Jack Lucas, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Lucas, has been named as a semi-finalist in competition for more than 3,000 merit scholarships to be awarded in 1975. He is one of 15,000 semi-finalists across the nation.

The Malta Masons will have a special meeting Thursday to honor Carl Veseth for 50 years of membership in the lodge.

Chosen as Champion Quarter horse at the fall horse show was a mare named Meg, owned by Don Robinson and shown by Ross Simser. Reserve was Fancy Jo owned by Diana Robinson and shown by Barb Robinson. Locals placing included, in pole bending 11-15, Paula Knudsen and Sandra Olson; 10 and under Laura Smith and Jody Knudsen.

The Malta Grade School received considerable damage in a break-in by vandals. Fingernail polish was dumped on the furniture and walls. The couch was ruined, instant coffee and cleaning powder had been dumped all around. Serious damage was limited to the teachers room, but other rooms showed signs of having been entered. Principal George Knudsen said break-ins occur about twice a week from April to June. Five break-ins have occurred this fall.

Representing the Malta Business and Professional Women’s Club at the District 5 Montana Chapter meeting in Malta was Mary Mans, President of the Malta B-PW. Myrtle Holte did a skit. Sunday morning session opened with Rev. Vince Nelson giving devotions, Sheila Watts sang two songs accompanied by Donna Mendel.

Sept. 29, 1949

Barbara Messerly became the bride of Raymond Cebulski in a beautiful afternoon ceremony. The bride was given in marriage by her uncle, Norman Jaynes. The couple was attended by Katherine Feberwee and Russell Cebulski. Thomas Taylor and Junior Sjostrom were ushers.

School District 20 at Whitewater voted 98-32 and passed a bond levy to build a district school. There are 23 students and two school teachers in the high school at the time.

At the first school assembly of the year, the Malta school song was played by the pep band, followed by Bertha Hershman with a piano solo, followed by Glen Sandefur with his trusty guitar and a pretty song. Next was Pat Strope with a piano solo, and then our favorite cowgirls, Marlene Barileach and Fern Oxarart with “Chime Bells.” Fern played the guitar. Then the band played several pieces. Result: a happy ending with students getting out of school 30 minutes early.

A mass meeting of businessmen and landowners from Chinook to Glasgow met in the court room in Malta to discuss a sugar beet factory for the valley.

Mrs. Margaret Duvall and Frank Ellison, both of Malta, were married.

Charles Holman was named the temporary mail carrier on the rural route out of Wagner.

George Jones had reported the discovery of a six foot vein of good coal about 20 miles south Ashfield.

Clarence Brockway and Dora Stith were married at Chinook.

The new A. Cavanaugh house (now occupied by Einar Veseth” was soon to be ready for occupancy. It was the most ellegant home in Malta.

A fine rain was falling which was considered a fine thing for the county.

Ed Powell and W. J. Tressler had built neat fences around their town residents.
