M-ettes Split Games, Beat LadyCats

The Malta M-ettes volleyball team played their first two games of the regular season last weekend, which included a 3-0 Homecoming win over the Harlem LadyCats last Saturday, September 14, in Malta.

The M-ettes fell to the Glasgow Lady Scotties 2-3, in Glasgow in the team's first game of the regular season.

The M-ettes will head to Wolf Point on Saturday, September 21, to face the Lady Wolves. The M-ette JV and C teams will see action against North Country on Friday, September 20.

In Malta's win over Harlem, the scores were 25-23, 25-19, and 25-9.

The PCN caught up with Malta's captains including juniors Kendall Clausen, Denvyr Tuss, and senior Ava Hanson after the win.

Clausen was asked about the win and she shared the team's goals.

"Just to have good energy and communication," Clausen said. "And just to win the homecoming game."

Tuss led Malta with eight kills and three blocks. Senior Kelbie Nelson had 10 digs. Junior Brooklynn Knowles had 21 of 28 team assists. Junior Neva Jacobson had four aces.

As a team, Malta had 30 kills, 28 assists, 15 aces, 48 digs, and four blocks.

Though she didn't lead in any single stat that night, Hanson's experience came in handy, as the senior was able to pick up crucial points in the win. Hanson was also named Homecoming Queen for Malta.

"I was pretty excited, I was in shock, I think," Hanson said. "Then I looked at my friends and they were all cheering, so that was pretty cool."

She was asked how it felt to pick up the homecoming game victory.

"It feels really good, especially since it is homecoming," Hanson said. "I know it was like a slower paced game, but I think we all played good."

The most adversity that Malta faced was in the first set, when they gave up a late lead to Harlem. Tuss was asked how thy were able to overcome it.

"I think we got our nerves out of the way, since it is the first home game and then we just started playing together and had better communication the next two sets," Tuss said.

In Malta's loss to Glasgow, the scores were 25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, and 17-19.

Kendall Clausen led Malta with nine kills and 26 digs. Jacobson had 15 assists and four aces. Tuss had eight blocks.

As a team, the M-ettes had 109 digs, 36 kills, 31 assists, 13 blocks, and 13 aces.

"I think our energy just went down in the fifth set and we just got tired," Clausen said "So when they come here, we'll definitely protect our home court and beat them."
