2024 Mavericks Volleyball

Mavericks Hope To Retain District Crown

The North Country Lady Mavericks Volleyball team graduated their top two hitters from their 2023 season that ended with the team taking third in the State C tournament for the second season in a row.

The team will be without Teagan Erickson, Paige Wasson, and Kendall Scheffelmear, who graduated last spring. All three earned All-Conference honors last season. Erickson and Wasson were All-State selections.

The team welcomes back junior BaiLee McColly who was an All-Conference selection in 2023.

This year's team has three seniors, two of which have competed with North Country for four years. Those seniors are Layna Jones and Berkley Hillman.

"Berkley has been a varsity contributor since she was a sophomore and is going to be a Team Captain this year," Mavericks Head Coach Charlene Wasson said. "Layna has yet to crack varsity time but we are hoping she can get play in enough varsity sets this season to letter. She will be our Libero on JV and backup Libero on varsity."

The team welcomes Anna Teichroew, a transfer from Lustre.

"Anna is learning the ropes in a new system and will fill a role on the JV and help out with learning team captain responsibilities this season," Coach Wasson said.

North Country has seven juniors this season, many of whom saw time on the court last season.

"Our junior class consists of Ireland Mears, from Saco and Abbigail Killman, from Whitewater Kennedy Simonson and from Hinsdale CharLee McColly, BaiLee McColly, Kodi McColly and Lylith Bear," Coach Wasson said. "BaiLee McColly is our only returning All-Conference Selection from last year where she earned second team. Kennedy started varsity last season and was our main setter, CharLee played right side and Ireland Mears was our libero last season on varsity. I look for the junior class to step up and fill some roles we lost to graduation. You will see Kodi McColly and Lylith Bear get some front-row positions and Abbigail Killman took two years off from volleyball so she is relearning and filling a role on C squad and JV."

The team has four in the sophomore class, including three returnees; Brynlie Boreson, Emerson Downing, and Mylee Clark.

"Brynlie and Mylee will have a large role on junior varsity this season," Coach Wasson said. "Brynlie is going to be a setter and Mylee a middle/outside hitter and play the back row. Emerson is going to start varsity for us this year and do some setting, outside hitting and playing defense in the back row."

The team welcomes Isabella Guardipee.

"She too has had a few years off from volleyball but you wouldn't really know it," Coach Wasson said. "She is picking up fast and will continue to get more roles on JV as the year progresses. She is comfortable right now being a hitter and we are working on getting her setting skills refined so she can become a setter as well on JV."

The freshman class consists of Gracie Wasson, Izzy Jones, and Danika Orth. Wasson competed with the team as an eighth grader last year.

"Gracie will be helping the JV out this year setting till we can mature another setter on the JV, and she will fill a role on varsity as a setter, defensive specialist and outside hitter," Coach Wasson said. "Izzy Jones and Danika Orth are our new faces this season from Hinsdale as freshmen. They both have come a long way in a short amount of time. Picking up skill work and knowledge very quickly. They will be finding their roles on JV in the front row and refining their back row skills as well."

The team's first goal of the season is communication. Coach Wasson and the team has other goals, but they are working on the main thing.

"We talked about being a great communicating team this season to help us progress to a level we need to be at at the end of the season because we have new old and new faces in new roles on the court," Coach Wasson said. "We also talked about winning Districts and getting on that roll at the end of the season we have been blessed to do the last two years. We have the skills to be right back where we were last year. It just needs to come together and I believe it will."

The team's regular season started on Friday night in Saco, and the team defeated Richey-Lambert 3-1. The scores were 26-24, 25-13, 20-25, and 25-16.

" We started the season off on the right foot and I told these girls before the match it's their turn to write their story this season and we will build it together," Coach Wasson said. "I was thrilled with our ability to touch the ball and get our hands on it before it hit the ground."

They went on to defeat Plentywood 3-0 in Plentywood last Saturday, September 7. The scores were 25-21, 25-22, and 25-23.
