The Mustang Foundation held its annual banquet and thanked those who have invested time, money and life with Malta’s finest… its students.

The Malta Trails, Inc. will be hosting a Radio-a-thon to continue their two-phase plan for a trail walk that is safe and healthy. The Mustang Foundation started it out with a $5,000 donation.

The Malta High School District voted to change the Top 10 to a Top Eight and weigh AP classes heavier. They also purchased a 58-passenger bus at a cost of $19,500.

The Phillips County 4-H Council is hosting a CARNIVAL at the City Hall. Come enjoy games, a cake walk and concessions.

Megan Jones and Michael Rodriguez invite friends and family to celebrate their wedding at the Yellowstone Country Club in Billings.

Annabelle Drabbles was born August 15 in Glasgow to Lindsey and Tanner Drabbels. She joins two sisters at home.

One steer out of 17 qualified for Steer of Merit. The beef belonged to Markelle Lett. Two lambs qualified, they were raised by Caleigh Green and Pierce Mortenson. Four swine qualified and the owners were Channing Mavencamp, Kennedy Koss, Reese Sjostrom and Dally Niebur.

A complete band was shown in a photo with teacher Viola Beyer at the Bowdoin School. The band consisted of Leonard Doney, Kevin Salsbery, Terry, Cathy, Gail, Jan, Craig, and Mary Pat Stiles.

Shining beneath the Senior Spotlight Eva Robinson shared her love for home-style tomato soup. Black Beauty was her favorite book, and she loves anything funny. Her hobbies are riding and reading, but not at the same time.

Winning the Women’s Summer Golf League was the First Security Bank Team of Gail Cummings, Tyanna Dunbar, Cyra Mears and Jamie Ulrich.

People were holding their breath and getting their taste buds ready in anticipation of Loran Green and Friends preparing to attempt to cook the world’s largest hamburger coming up on Labor Day.

The City of Saco was being supported by the County Commissioners in their attempt to secure a proposed grant for the renovation of Taylor Street and fund sidewalk work. Commissioner Richard Dunbar estimated the cost at $40-45,000.

A jury trial was averted when a Malta man, Kale Wilke, changed his plea to guilty to a charge of vehicular homicide in the death on July 6, 1998, of Jack Brogan.

Two brothers from Glasgow were thrown from their SUV in an accident. Gavin Allen was pronounced dead at the scene, and his brother Jesse was treated and released. Neither boy was wearing a seat belt at the time.

Fire totally destroyed the mobile home of Mike Wlodkowski; his son, wife and child were living in it at the time.

Timothy Wallis was the lucky winner and top reader in the summer reading program. Librarian Janeen Brookie presented him with a gift certificate and a cassette player.

The children and grandchildren of Clark and Gail Cummings invite you to share in a surprise 30th anniversary party to be held at Trafton Park on Sept. 5th.

Thirty-four years ago they said, “I do” and today “I do” means “I will run the south route” as Alice and Norman Solberg celebrated their anniversary.

Ore Lubbers was the first guest to show up at the open house celebrating the law firm of Cole, Amestoy & O’Brien and was pictured with Sonia Young, Denis Boland, Don Cole, Lonnie Link, Ann Cole, Dan O’Brien, Sheila O’Brien, Bob Galt and Ed and Jolene Amestoy.

THEY’RE BACK ~ and the Mustangs are up for the season. They have made it seven out of eight times into the final four in football action and are looking forward to heading there again.

The Runnin’ Penguins are ready for cross country season and the Dodson runners are aiming for state.

Aug. 22, 1974

The fifth annual Milk River Wagon Train has been dedicated in memory of T. B. Long, a longtime cowboy in Canada and Montana. Long’s son, Wayne, will be the trail boss.

About 20 wagons will join the Whitewater Wagon Train that will leave on August 30 and join the Malta train into Malta for a parade and rodeo. Fred Allery, Jr., is the wagon master and Don Olson is the trail boss.

Four vehicles were stolen in the area it was reported by Alert Fladland, Malta’s chief of police. A person was held in the city jail in connection to the thefts but was released Wednesday on his own recognizance. There is also a good deal of garden destruction taking place all over town.

Finally. After a long dry spell, a new baby was born at the Malta hospital with the arrival of a daughter, Christa, to John Clark and Gail Cummings. She has the distinction of being the first United States, Montana, and Malta baby delivered by Dr. Jan Ramaiya, the new doctor.

Gary Bebee, former Malta resident and son of Byron Bebee of Malta, was awarded first place in the Fiddlers Contest at the Tri-County Fair held in Deer Lodge.

Capt. Edward Mangis received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Denver. He is the son of Vern Mangis of Malta and is in the U. S. Air Force in Nevada.

Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Taylor celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a mass at St. Mary’s with Rev. Donovan celebrating the service. A dinner for family and guests was held at an open house following the service.

Dodson Schools will begin on August 27; Roger Bak is the superintendent and Maxine Bushy is the business manager and clerk.

Well, it was a fine fair – bigger and better than ever! All past records for attendance were shattered and the grandstands were really packed for the excellent rodeo and night show performances.

One – two – three – make it four! Four babies were born last week in Glasgow hospitals. Sons were born to the Robert Bryson’s, the Eric Presbo’s and the Albert Ross’s, all of Saco. A daughter was born to the James Henry’s of Dodson.

About $200 worth of vegetable slicers were stolen from a vendor at the Dodson Fair carnival according to a report filed by Special Deputy Francis Emerson.

Miss Doris Lundstrom president of the Malta Pilgrim Fellowship was elected chairman of personal action for the Pilgrim Fellowship of Montana at the annual state Congregational Bible camp at Mimanogish recently.

Ira Piper and Gladys Coe received blankets awarded by the VFW Auxiliary at the county fair.

Vital statistics: Deaths: John Frederick Carnahan, 61, and Raymond Nez Perce, 18.

Police Court: Albert Ayers, drunkenness; Isadore Ellery and Elmer Denny, both for drunkenness; Leonard Campbell (alias John Bradley) vagrancy; William Ham, for drunkenness and prowling.

Blanche Johnson, daughter of Editor and Mrs. H. A. Johnson of the Enterprise, had been injured by a bucking horse.

Ray Gardner had sold his interest in the Trafton-Dorr company and was planning on going into business for himself.

Gene Jensen was hospitalized with injuries received when he was thrown from a horse.

Dodson was to observe National Defense Day, September 12, as a feature of the last day of the Phillips County Fair.

Mr. and Mrs. William Armington were the parents of a new daughter.

Malta schools were to open on September 2. The previous year’s enrollment was 500 students in grade and high school.

A farm census was being taken by the Great Western Sugar Company as a preliminary to establishing a proposed factory in the Milk River valley.

The Missouri River was said to be extremely low with point eight inches below the previous dry year.

George Dean was the champion farmer of the area with 30 acres of fine crops ready to be harvested.

The local wool crop had been disposed of at an average price of 21 cents per pound. The clip handled at Malta amounted to 1,459,878 pounds. The Phillips ranch produced a total of 328,406 pounds. Ole Veseth’s clip was the second largest with a total of 135,491 pounds and Carl Hansen’s clip amounted to 90,084. (*to save you the task, the clips brought a total of $306,574.38; individuals received $68,965.26, $28,453.11, and $18,917.64, respectively.)

William Herbert had resumed the management of the Gem restaurant.

The new law firm of John Tressler and James A. Wilson was established in Malta.
