One Nation, Under God

Why Would You Play THAT Song?

Can you win a medal for dance by busting out one single move? I can confirm that the answer is yes!

Our second night on the Carnival Freedom ended up being a lot more nostalgic than I had planned as we attended the 90’s Music Trivia Night event.

I will not lie… I did not want to go. I am not a fan of popular music. Not then and not now. But I joined my wife and the adults in her family for the event.

I did get more answers right then wrong in the trivia portion of the event, but for Susan and myself, the highlight was earning a Carnival Cruise Medal. You earn these medals for crowd participation.

A few earned medals by going on stage and singing and dancing the answers of the songs that were being played. Some were more talented than others, including a trio that sang and danced to “Say My Name,” by Destiny’s Child. Some were just silly and goofy and others we probably wouldn’t replay in front of the eyes of children.

Then, when they started playing Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” Susan gestured to me to get up. She said, “We can win this one.”

She noticed a lot of people were slow dancing. I didn’t want to dance, but I love my wife. So I listened and we struck the pose.

You remember the pose made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, who played Jack and Rose in the 1997 classic “Titanic?”

We were on the balcony, all eyes on us as the announcer said that we had earned medals! We were pretty pumped about that moment for the rest of the trip.

Why would they play that song on a cruise ship? I don’t know, but the next time that they played it during another night of 90’s trivia, I got in trouble…

The venue was different this time and the atmosphere was as well. We had a new host and she had the house hopping!

I was never a person that liked a club atmosphere, but alas, I was in a club atmosphere and all of a sudden, they played the Titanic song. The host was walking up the stairs in our direction looking for her “Jack”.

I was hoping she was going for one of our younger and handsome members of the family, but she stopped with me. She remembered when Susan and I struck the pose! With hundreds of eyes on me, I was stuck and afraid that if I didn’t participate, I would be embarrassed.

Needless to say, that moment was the worst. I liked the moment when Susan and I earned a medal together. That version was awesome.

While tuning into the Trump rally in Bozeman, I heard that song come on and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Why on Earth would you play that song? It is a classic, but on a ship or a political rally, it seems like a bad omen.

Celine Dion and her people were not too happy about the unauthorized use of her song during the event in Bozeman. I get it. I wouldn’t want my hard work tied to either party.
