Saco graduate, Scott Haynes, has written and illustrated two children’s books this year. His stories and illustrations depict life on the Hi-line of Montana. Now living in Wyoming, he also has had a contract with Leanin’ Tree for cards.

Esther Martin states she is not yet retired…in her younger years, she worked for the telephone company. She enjoys hearty chicken and dumplings, loves horses and any kind of good ol’ love story is her favorite for books and movies. Esther enjoys dancing.

Mike Morser, a local border patrolman and martial artist, competed in the 2014 Big Sky State Games. Not only did he compete, he won the honor of the tournament’s adult black belt Grand Champion after winning gold and silver in both “Kata” and weapons and winning silver in sparring.

Russell Jaynes turned the heads of the audience in awe as he competed in the tractor pull contest at the Phillips County Fair. His pickup was able to pull a 6,000-pound sled down the track, disregarding rain or mud.

School is starting. And with the return to school comes the possibility of head lice. Parents are urged to take precautions.

Come and join Troy and LaRae Blunt as they celebrate their 40 years of marriage. Head to Fourchette Bay on Saturday; burgers and hot dogs are provided, bring whatever you would like. Hope to see you there!

Beyond Coach King’s corral, Jade Olson, now a running back for Rocky Mountain College, is back in the line-up after redshirting his freshman year.

Young 4-H members receiving awards at the Horse Show held before the fair included: Daniel Martin, Grand Champion Horsemanship V, Whitney Lumsden, Most Improved Horseman, Casey Brewer, Grand Champion 3-yr. old under saddle and 1st Place Adv. Jr. Showmanship. Felecia Harms won 1st Place Sr. Horsemanship and Grand Champion Yearling Foal at Halter.

Ceri Demarais won 1st Place Beg. Dr. Horsemanship; Tessa Olsen won Grand Champion Horsemanship 1, Katie Smith won Grand Champion Horsemanship 2, and Megan Ereaux won Grand Champion Horsemanship 3. Andrea Robinson won Grand Champion 4-yr. old Under Saddle. Buckshot Nelson took home his share of hardware by winning the Judge’s Choice Horse Award, Grand Champion Horsemanship IV, Reserve Champion Yearling Foal at Halter, and Reserve Champion 3-yr. old Under Saddle.

Dusten Young raised, fed and fattened the grand champion steer this year; it was purchased by the First State Bank.

Matt Sims’ grand champion market hog was sold to Albertson’s; the reserve market hog was exhibited by Jared Holman and purchased by Keifer Angus.

Harvest around the county is in full swing as evidenced on the front page of the PCN. A field of grain is being quickly consumed by seven huge combines as they reaped what was sown in the spring.

The Phillips County Commissioners have denied a petition to transfer territory from Whitewater School District 20 AA to Malta School District 14. The petition, on behalf of some residents in District 20 AA, was denied at a meeting on July 22.

Larry Harold Shore, of Havre, was charged in Justice Court with burglary, a felony, and bond was set at $2,500. He was charged following a burglary of the Valley Drug Company in which approximately $2,350 worth of hard drugs and $74 were taken from the drug store till. He was released on bond Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a citizen walking by the courthouse noticed that the window was open in the welfare office at about 6 a.m. The break-in is being investigated by the city police.

Mass was held for four-month-old Ryon Gregg Plainfeather, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Plainfeather. The child was born on March 24, with a heart condition. Burial was in the Bell family cemetery in Lodgepole.

Sheryl Flatt displayed the gold championship medal that she earned at the Western Central Swimming Federation championship in Kalispell. She won the medal in the 50-meter freestyle. Joe Berg was the only other medal winner from Malta.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben Fewer requested your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Susan Ruth, to Loran Green, on August 24th at the Malta Lutheran Church at two o’clock in the afternoon; a reception will follow.

Dr. Jan K. Ramaiya has begun his medical practice in association with Dr. R. M. Wiprud.

Charleen Ruud and Bruce Williams of Augusta were married on July 20th at Mammoth Chapel in Yellowstone Park.

Aug. 11, 1949

Alfred Nelson, of the Zortman community, pleaded guilty to the theft of about $200 worth of wool from the Pierre Itcaina ranch and was sentenced to one year in the state penitentiary. The wool was sacked and stored at the Matador.

Jack Brennan pleaded not guilty to a charge of burglary in the second degree and was remanded to the custody of Sheriff Frank Partridge until a jury term of court is set for Phillips County. Brennan is charged with breaking into a house owned by Jack Corrigan on the north side and stealing about $20.

Funeral services for one of Phillips County’s leading citizens, Hugh Dudley Jones of Dodson, will be held at the Malta Community Church on Monday afternoon and burial will be in the family plot in the Malta Cemetery.

At least 20 prairie fires were started last Sunday evening by lightning and several thousands of acres of range grass were destroyed. The fire at the Paul Kropp ranch burned approximately 2,000 acres. It burned until Monday afternoon when it was thought to be under control, but it broke out again about 8 o’clock p.m. and more men were sent out again from Malta. At least nine fires started in the Loring community. Seven or eight were started near Cole but in each case, showers followed the electrical storm.

The Rev. Charles B. Cole had preached the anniversary sermon at the observance held at the Margaret Boles Memorial church in Midale. People from all sections of the county were present.

There were 3,483 voters eligible to cast ballots in the coming election in Phillips County, 884 of whom resided in the Malta precinct.

Peter Taylor was building a two-story dwelling on his ranch south and west of Malta.

Ed White has purchased a handsome running horse who is reputed to be pretty fast.

Mr. and Mrs. Max Elliot had boarded a train in Malta with their ultimate destination to be Scotland.

J. S. Morgan died at Colorado Springs. He was said to have left an estate of from fifty to a hundred thousand dollars.
