Boyd Stroh, came to the Dodson Fair, following in his dad’s footsteps, and scored the only points in saddle bronc riding to win first. He is from Dickinson, North Dakota, and is the son of Shawn and Shannon (Hould), former Malta residents.
Chantel Lett had the grand market beef at the fair; it was purchased by the First Security Bank for $4 per pound. Madison Waters owned the reserve champion which sold for $4.10 a pound, it had been purchased by The First State Bank.
WBI Energy provided a check for $1,600 to Saco Chamber of Commerce to purchase tables for the upcoming Saco Fun Days.
Sr. Spotlight was highlighting LeRoy Rasmussen, a retired rancher with a love for fishing and 40’s and 50’s music. Other favorites include his favorite animal, a horse, and prime rib.
Wally Henry picked up on the “surprise” party that was going to be held in his honor. The occasion was his 90th birthday, and all nine of his children were able to be home.
In celebration of Gary and Donna Young’s 50th wedding anniversary, and the 25th for Daniel and Brenda Hellyer, cake and refreshments would be served at Trafton Park on August 16th.
Channing Mavencamp was the owner of the Reserve Market swine at the Dodson Fair, which sold for $6.25 per pound.

Efforts were underway to explore the possibility of methods to fund and operate a family-oriented department/clothing store.
County commissioners will apparently dip into a metal mines trust fund they administer to the tune of $30,000 to help fund a shortfall in the public safety budget which finance operation of the Sheriff’s Office and Dispatch Office. Commissioner Francis Jacobs said the county will also move $23,000 in gas royalties from the general fund to the public safety budget to help build up its reserve funds.
The Midland Empire Shows presented a $500 scholarship in honor of long-time fair manager and supporter Marion Waters, to 4-H’er Taleena Young, Saturday night prior to the start of the talent show in the grandstand. Taleena was selected because of her active participation in the 4-H program. Presenter, Red Williams cited his personal friendship with Waters, who died earlier this year and noted he was the first Montana fair board manager to receive the Wendy’s national fair manager’s award. Brent Waters, Marion’s son, represented the family.
By most accounts, he was the most entertaining country music singer booked for the night show at the Phillips County Fair in the five years since fair officials have been looking at big names. And by all counts, the turnout to watch Lee Greenwood perform 95 minutes of non-stop concert that pleased adults and teenagers was dismal. Only 397 adults and 163 kids bought tickets to watch the show.

Five generations of the Bud Phillips’ family gathered with him, they included Lori Mace, Buddy Ereaux, Cissy Adams and Charles Ereaux.
City Clerk Gene Koch proposed a tax increase of 33-cents to raise the sewer and water rates. The rate increase would cost property owners $31.17 annually.
The fair is over and records show that 2,571 came through the gates on Saturday, compared to 3,140 last year. The LeRoy Van Dyke show brought in eight more fair-goers than last year. This year the fair board realized a $600 profit on the night show.
Holly Southwick was the guest of honor at a bridal patio shower, hosted by Paula Dean, Sheila Watts and Mrs. Dwayne Simanton, Jr.; Southwick will be married Sept 7 to Mark Bourassa.
There will be a new business opening soon; Dan’s TV and Electronics will be operated by Dan Sisco and his wife, Marla (Ashby). He has been studying electronics since his discharge from the U. S. Air Force in Denver.
Nancy Olsen had the grand champion market beef at the fair. The Simmental-Hereford steer weighed 1,220 pounds and sold for 65 cents a pound, bringing $793.
Young angler John Niebur had help from little brother, Jim, in displaying his 10-pound walleye. The beast was caught near the family farm eight miles west of Malta.
Dodson High School Classes of 1951-60 held their reunion, which was well attended; for the most part, everyone recognized a good majority of their classmates!

A cloudburst south of Malta Wednesday afternoon filled two reservoirs to about 10 or 12 feet, and partially filled a new dam, according to Louie Perry. Perry and Bill Thompson, Jr., had watched the rain fill Black coulee. Perry was combining on the Southwick ranch when the rain started, and both men watched the summer-long dry ditches fill up. They also reported “lakes of water laying on the summer fallow.” The rain poured for 2 and a half hours.
Delbert Barrett, son of Ehriam and Vera Barrett of Malta, was recently promoted to private first class at Tokyo Quartermaster depot where he is now stationed.
Five boys will represent Phillips County at Boys State in Dillon Aug. 14-23. The five are Benny Kline, Lee Didier, Robert Jaynes, Russell Hendrickson and Howard Smith.
A near-disaster almost put Lucky Trail, one of Phillips County’s outstanding racers out of action for the horse racing fair program at the Phillips County Fair this weekend. According to Bud Phillips, owner of the horse, three airplanes swooped low over the grandstand at the Shelby fair just as the horses were being put into the starting gate. Lucky Trail bolted at the noise, and sprung the starting gate, injuring a shoulder and head. The horse mended nicely, however, and should be in good shape to run in the races for Phillips County horses on Saturday and Sunday at Dodson.
A fortieth wedding anniversary was the occasion for the gathering of relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Compton at their home in Malta last Tuesday. Guests attending were Mr. and Mrs. Ward Compton and family, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Compton and family, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Mangis and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Compton, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Bradley, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ramberg.
Fire, breaking out sometime about midnight, totally destroyed a barn, garage and shed on the B. M. Phillips ranch south of Landusky. Lost in the blaze were eight saddles, harnesses, a hay rake, and other machinery, two small calves and an automobile.

Paul Daellenbach was on the sick list at his Brookside home.
Henry Gladau, 28, died at his home in Dodson.
Jim Dunnigan had returned from California stating that “Malta was good enough” for him.
Dwight Skinner’s baby was in serious condition as the result of a fire in the home.
Approximately 10 tons of potatoes, a hay rack full of cabbage and a wagon load of each of new peas, carrots, bees, onions, beans and 100 quarts of strawberries had been consumed locally.

Dodson was experiencing a building boom, A new 20-room hotel was under construction.
Charles Whitcolm and Tom Carter were in Malta with the monthly clean-up of the Ruby Gulch mine. Carter, one of the oldest prospectors in the Little Rockies, had disposed of his mining interests for a good sum.
