Swim Team Takes Third Place at State

The Malta Swim Team competed at the Montana Federation of Swimmers State Meet in Sidney last weekend and came home with a third place trophy in Class C.

"I thought the team did great," Malta Head Coach Danika Wilke said. "There were only four teams competing for Class C at state and we managed to get a 3rd place trophy even though there were four of us swimmers. That being said, if we got 3rd place with only four swimmers you could only imagine what we could do with more.

"All the Malta swimmers placed on the first day and made it to finals on Sunday," Coach Wilke continued. "It was overall a great weekend and an amazing experience with such a small team. I am very proud of everything they did this weekend."

Malta was led by 16-year-old Kael Young, who had 29 points. Silas Young, age 14, had 24 points and Taya Wilke, age 13, had 16 points.

K. Young was second in the Boys 15-19 50 Meter Freestyle finals with a time of 26.46 (27.01 in the prelims). He was third in the 100 Meter Freestyle finals with a time of 1:00.11 (1:01.92 in prelims). He was also sixth in the 50 Meter Fly Stroke finals with a time of 34.40 (32.69 in prelims).

S. Young was second in the Boys 13-14 100 Meter Breaststroke finals with a time of 1:29.67 (1:31.00 in prelims). He was sixth in the 50 Meter Freestyle finals with a time of 31.82 (31.33 in prelims). He was eighth in the 100 Meter Freestyle finals with a time of 1:13.10 (1:13.14 in prelims).

T. Wilke was seventh in the Girls 13-14 200 Meter IM with a time of 3:31.22. She was also eighth in the 50 Meter Freestyle finals with a time of 34.32 (34.57 in prelims). She was eighth in the 100 Meter Breaststroke finals with a time of 1:45.00 (1:42.70 in prelims).

Coach Wilke swam, T. Wilke, K. Young, and S. Young in the Mixed 15-19 200 Meter Freestyle and 200 Meter Medley. The team took fourth place in both events with a time of 2:09.07 in the Freestyle and 2:33.33 in the Medley.
