They came ready and pumped up. They came ready to take the world on. "They" were at the Big Sky State Games held in Billings, Montana over the weekend. From east to west and north to south, families and individuals converged on Billings and added not only to the traffic, they opened their wallets for lodging, food, shopping, entertainment and fuel.
The most popular sport continues to be basketball, which attracted 1,500 athletes; volleyball is the second most popular bringing about 800 athletes into the gyms
Softball is the sport of choice for approximately 600, while track and field adds 400 more.
Over 9,000 athletes came to compete this year at the 39th Annual BSSG.
Local athletes also made the trek and were in various competitions. Nate Hammond coached the boys basketball team that came away with third place. They were John Carney (Scobey), Duke Williamson, Dawson Hammond, Jace Bantz, Kash Ereaux, TJ Siewing, Mason Simanton and Gunnar Knox.
Katy Anderson coached a gathering of girls that won fourth place, they were Neva Jacobson, Tailynne Wilke, Emree Stuart, Denvyr Tuss, Emma Ereaux, Khloe Zeiger, Hailey Welch, and Kylee Bishop from Malta, and Cammie Martell from Poplar. Competing and winning three and losing two, and not grasping any hardware or medals was a men's basketball team of RC Skiff, Stockton and Kooper Oxarart, Darrow Messerly, Jon Rey Taylor, Ryan Doyle, Jesse Lee, Brady Bantz and Reese Elliott.
In the martial arts category Ben Schiffbauer took first, and Maria Meneely took first in Board Breaking and third in Weapons. Amariahna Stevenson captured third in Sparring. Marla Morser placed third in Weapons (age 46 and under).
The father-son duo of Kaleb and Matte McMillan and Matteo participated in arm wrestling and each of them placed second in their age bracket. With their left hand, Kaleb won a bronze and Matteo a silver.
The Whitewater Girls Basketball captured the gold and the 9-10 grade team also brought home the gold.
Michael Love, in the 14 and Up category, came home with the gold in golf.
