One Nation, Under God

My Morning Habits on Vacation

I never ever, ever, ever, thought that I would miss instant coffee, but I do.

Not necessarily the flavor, but what it brought to our trip to the Bahamas.

Upon leaving Malta, I brought a couple of bags of my coffee just in case I did not like the coffee on vacation. One bag was spoken for and the other went to a bandmate that lives in Florida. More on that at another time.

So, there I was coffee-less on a ship. Or so I thought.

Thankfully, the ship had coffee that I could buy by the cup or another option; instant coffee from a machine.

I decided to skip out of the overpriced espresso drinks for the complimentary option. I expected it to be the worst tasting coffee ever…. But it wasn’t bad.

I enjoyed it. But it wasn’t about the flavor or cost, or its effect on waking me up. It was about the company I had on the boat; my wife, children, and various members of Susan’s family that I had spent time with on that boat while drinking that coffee.

It felt like time didn’t matter on the ship, so some of those cups were pretty late at night.

We did hit up a few coffee places throughout our trip and I have to say that my favorite tasting cup came from the Caribou Coffee chain. The coffee we had at an Airbnb wasn’t bad either.

The Airbnb was the first destination of our trip. In that house was 27 people, all members of the Fauth family. We all got along pretty well and there were plenty of good times at the house along with great conversation and memories.

The house had plenty of space as well as a pool and back patio area.

There was also a pond where others vacationing enjoyed some fishing, but I didn’t see anyone swimming. It did not take me long to figure out the reason. There was a five-foot alligator in the water!

We saw a gator the first night that we arrived in Florida! I had lived in Florida for three years and had only seen one alligator in public. Seeing the Airbnb gator set the tone for our trip in Florida.

While in Florida, I woke up before anyone in our party and instead of rushing to the coffee pot as usual, the thrill of seeing the gator woke me up.

More on my wildlife hunt another time.
