When the floodlights click on this Friday night at the Phillips County Fair, rising country music superstar Trevor Panczak and the Rough Stock Band will grace the stage playing original songs in good-time fashion. Two weeks ago, they had the pleasure of being the opening act before the Tim McGraw show. Panczak said, “I was floored…I was like, holy cow, my ship has come in!”
The following athletes qualified in three swimming events by placing in the top 6 in finals (not an easy task): Jenese Amestoy, Shay Garfield, Carly Garfield, and Darrow Messerly.
On Saturday, August 30, the folks in Saco are holding the 51st Annual Saco Fun Days in an end of the summer bash. Donations were coming in for the raffle that will be held. The event will include a free BBQ dinner, parade, kids games and at night a street dance.
Jace Bishop and Kolby Messerly were displaying one of the two stock trailers they won at the Ty Yost National Team Roping Tour in Billings on July 19.
Gnats, mosquitoes and heat plagued the Mustang practice field as the Mustang football camp kicked off last Monday. Under Coach Nick Oxarart in his first year as head coach, his team was young and undersized, but sharp.
The local Phillips County Extension Office celebrated 100 years of the organization on July 18, 2014, in the library basement. About 35 people came down to enjoy looking at old photos, record books and refreshments.
Highlighted in the Senior Spotlight, Betty Flom shared that her favorite animal is a cow and her favorite meal is beef steak. The retired rancher loves any good western book, her favorite being Stay Away Joe. Her favorite song is Wings of a Dove, and her favorite hobby (which we are glad to hear), is reading the Phillips County News.
When Travis Panczak performs Friday night, OK with the Runaway will open for him. Two locals, Craig LaFond on drums and vocals, and Vince Mace will be playing bass and also doing vocals for the band.

Tracy Henry recently forfeited $120 bail on a charge of unlawful transaction with a minor. He had been scheduled to appear in Justice Court on July 26, according to Justice of the Peace Gayle Stahl.
Lynaya Green, Paula Enkerud, Dianne Hanson and Barb Math participated in the Relay for Life honoring cancer survivors in the walk in Glasgow.
Members of the Malta High School graduating classes of 1968 and 1969 held a joint reunion in Malta, with a good turnout from both classes.
Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Starr announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Sherri, to Skip Frank Houston of Panguitch, Utah.
It’s going up on the bidding block - that is, the former Superintendant’s house owned by the Malta School District. It will be sold as part of the surplus property auction.
In court action, Manfred Jones of Dodson received a five-year deferred sentence, was placed on probation with the state Department of Corrections and ordered to pay a $600 fine. Charged with a felony assault, he also received a 60-day sentence in the county jail with credit for 58 days already served.
Willis Jay Weston was committed to the DOC for two years for criminal possession of dangerous drugs. Having recently entered a guilty plea in McCone County on a charge of arson by accountability, he received a six-year sentence to the DOC with three years suspended. The sentence is to run concurrently with one he is already serving in Phillips County for criminal sale of dangerous drugs.
A trial date was set for Bill Ferrell, who is accused of felony theft for allegedly taking in excess of $500 from the Laundromat operated by Malta Opportunities Inc. while an employee there.

Mrs. William (Frances Lee) Smith of Conrad and Mike Hervol of Plains were members of the first graduating class from Dodson High School in 1926 and they attended the Dodson All-Class Reunion. There were six members of that first graduating class.
Greta Koss, newborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Koss, was named the Father’s Day Baby by the CowBelles.
Paramutual races would be held three days of the fair. Owen Funk (Hinsdale) and Victor Nicholson (Dodson) will serve as state stewards, Monte Denham as secretary, Don Pope as starter, and Dr. Jim Curtis is on the bill as veterinarian.
One cow on Highway 2 caused three accidents within two hours. A man from Wisconsin first hit the cow, two hours later a man from Minnesota hit it and was injured. Five minutes later, Margie Denham hit it; neither her or her passenger were injured.
Fair Board officials Don Pope, Mark Newby, and Marion Waters are gearing up for the fair; Leroy Van Dyke was the Sunday evening night show.
Todd Smith and Diana Robinson had placed in the state high school rodeo in Hamilton and would be heading to Tomah, Wisc. for national finals.
Tom Lumsden rode three winners in a row to lead all jockeys Sunday in the State Fair horse races.

Betty Jo Gorden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gorden of Massillon, Ohio, had drowned July 13 in a water tank at the ranch of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cowan, near Turner. The little girl was one year and seven months old and fell in the tank while playing nearby. She and her mother, Delores Cowan, had been visiting. When the father arrived from Ohio, services were held on July 16 at the Turner Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Turner cemetery.
Malta’s city hall bonds, due in 1955, have been retired at a good saving in interest to taxpayers and as a result there will be an automatic drop of four mills in the city levy, it was disclosed Wednesday following a budget meeting of the city council Tuesday evening.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Andrews of Loring July 17 at the Carl Haser home, Malta.
Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Slaught were in a car, driven by Slaught, that went off highway 19 about 40 miles south of Malta, approximately 3 a. m. Sunday morning. The car, traveling too fast to make a turn, according to Patrolman Pete Lehman, rolled completely over and skidded and was badly damaged. Mrs. Slaught received a broken shoulder, Mr. Slaught is thought to have received internal injuries and Dayton Starkey and Jack Lang, passengers, were less seriously injured. Starkey received facial cuts and Lang a bumped head and a cut on an arm. The party was on the way to Zortman. The injured persons were brought to Malta, from here they were taken to a Glasgow hospital. Newton E. Cummings brought them to Malta. Patrolman Pete Lehman is conducting an investigation of the accident.
A group of county young people who attended Lutheran Bible camp in the Bear Paw mountains south of Havre returned the first of the week reporting an interesting session and a lot of fun. Attending from Malta were Joyce Wiley, Iris Sanderson, Robert Flesche, Joyce Flesche, Eddie Helland and Jimmy Goll. John and Mable Flansaas were present from Loring and Ingolf and Arthur Solberg from Dodson.

Herbert Kibler who was recovering from burns received when he tripped and fell over a live wire while fighting a fire in Malta, had broken his collar bone in a fall at his home.
Some spring planted grains in the crucial drought areas are being for hay while those left for combining will produce very light yields. Summer fallow spring grains are more promising and additional moisture will help fill out the grain.
The hoppers are beginning to migrate and are moving from pastures and ranges into crop fields. Control measures in some areas are reported to be inadequate to control the pests.

The fall term of the Malta school was to open August 13. The school was now considered to be one of the best in this section of the state.
Top cattle brought $5.10 on the market, according to returns from a shipment of Circle Diamond steers received by John Survant. This was considered a satisfactory price.
The four big dams on the B. D. Phillips ranch which were washed out by heavy spring floods had been replaced at a cost of approximately $30,000.
