Cole Hould isn’t your typical 12-year-old athlete. In a world ruled by sports like basketball and football, young Hould is a roper. According to his mom, Ruby, he has been in rodeo since he put on his own pants. Hould was brought into the sport of team roping last year after he spent time with his uncle Jeff Hould.

The highlight of this year’s Mustang Foundation fund-raising event will be a raffle of a bronze statue created by world-renowned Western sculptor Jay Contway, a Malta High School Alum.

A “stranger” visited the Loring Colony last week according to Joe Hofer. A pair of moose, a buck, and a doe, visited for a while before pushing off to greener pastures.

The Malta Swim Team showed up 26 strong at the Lewistown meet. Young midget Darrow Messerly and Junior swimmer, Jenise Amestoy, led Malta in scoring with 34 points each. Shay Garfield also had a great showing with 30.5 points.

Gaylord LaFond, a 98-year resident of Phillips County, was interviewed by the PCN.

Rick Starkey’s 1970 Buick GS, a tube chassis car, is amongst the more animated cars at the dragstrip. It can get down the 1/8 mile asphalt in 5.95 seconds.

Entertainer Lee Greenwood will be appearing at the Phillips County Fair on August 5.

A Malta man has been charged with theft and Medicaid fraud in relation to claims he submitted for medical equipment and services he submitted for medical equipment and supplies provided to Medicaid patients. The state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit filed charges against Daniel Hellyer last week, contending he received approximately $15,000 in payment for fraudulent claims. Hellyer operates Daniel’s Drug in Malta. He is set to appear in Helena District Court on August 12.

About 120 Canadians visited the area and packing plants to discuss reducing transportation costs. Members of the Phillips County Stockgrowers visited Alberta last year.

Three local shooters managed to place high in the World Fast Draw Association competition held in Malta over the weekend during Outlaw Days. Ron Martinez (2nd), Geneta Faw (2nd), and Clinton Dausch (6th). The top four amateur shooters Doug Kienenberger, Kenny Solberg, Greg Kelsey and Gary Anderson also competed on Saturday night.

Candidates for the 1999 Phillips County Fair Junior Princess competition include Ashley Shippen, Katie Smith, Kristy Robinson, Ceri Demarais, Kate Murdock, Carli Olsen and Emily Phillips.

Although not a health hazard, manganese is responsible for the buildups that have plugged residential water lines and caused often expensive repair bills. In the past 12 months alone, 15 water lines have had to be dug up in the city, according to PWD John Demarais.

The Malta Swim Team will host the Central Division Federation of Summer Swimmers Championship this weekend. Swimmers must place here to compete in the state meet in Kalispell next weekend. Three hundred youth are expected to be here to compete.

County Attorney Willis McKeon filed information charging three men with having sexual intercourse with a female without consent, a felony. Two of the men reside in Lodgepole. Charged were Fred T. Bishop, Nolan Webb, and an unidentified man who lives out of state. Bond was set at $2,500 in each case.

Joanne Thorson, of Bozeman, and Wayne Stahl of Saco were married in Bozeman.

Leroy Van Dyke, nationally known country-western music entertainer, will be performing at the Phillips County Fair on Sunday night.

Permanent interment rites for Cpl. Byron D. (Buck) Hurley, son of Mrs. Jeanie Hurley and the late Byron Hurley of Malta were held at Ft. McKinley U. S. Military Cemetery, Manila, Philippine Islands June 30, Mrs. Hurley has been informed by Herman Feldman, Major General, the Quartermaster general of the U. S. Army. Major Feldman said in his letter to Mrs. Hurley: “This is to inform you that the remains of your loved one have been permanently interred--side by side with the comrades who gave their life for their country.”

They will take to the clouds in a C-47 on Sunday. Members of the Heavy Mortar Company, 163rd Infantry of the National Guard, will travel to Havre Sunday for an air tour of northeastern Montana, announced 2nd Lt. Robert Pewonka, of the local Guard unit. The tour will be at Great Falls East Base, the Fort Peck damsite, fly over Glasgow, Malta, and back to Havre.

Traffic violations include Irene Garcia, Harlem, four in truck cab and defective lights, $10; and Frank Skinner, Hays, riding a horse while intoxicated, $10.

There were 32 community leaders from Malta, Harlem, Turner, Roy, Billings and Lewistown at a meeting to discuss the bridge over the Missouri on Hwy 191 South.

Dance sponsors, the VFW Auxiliary and the VFW Cooties are gearing up for a big street dance to raise funds for the County Hospital Fund. Assisting are members of the Cootiettes, of which Beulah Mikkelson is chairman.

DANCE sponsored by the Farmers Union Juniors to be held on Saturday at the Bowdoin School House. Proceeds to go toward handicraft work.

An X-ray machine was being installed at the Malta Emergency Hospital by Dr. G. A. Johnson and Dr. W. G. Hough.

The big event of the weekend was to be a stampede at the Pecora farm eight miles southeast of Malta. A five-round boxing bout was to be staged between Joe Pronto and Alfred Taylor.

A wool clip of 350,000 pounds had been sheared in Phillips County. The highest price paid was 39 cents per pound. The clip five years ago was 700,000 pounds.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jensen and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Martell were injured when their car was ditched six miles east of Malta.

Irrigation for the Milk River Valley was a long way in the future, in the opinion of the editor of the Enterprise. Delegates who had returned from a conference in Washington said the fact that the Milk River flows through Canada was complicating matters and they had urged the construction of a reservoir at Chain Lakes.

The Bloom Cattle Company had shipped 35 cars of beef cattle to Chicago.

Wilfred Primeau and Louis Trudell were the first purchasers of the new self-binder in this part of the state.

Adolph Ereaux was nursing a wounded foot. Ax slipped.

Robert Erfurth, eldest son of Mr. And Mrs. Frank Erfurth had died.
