Interment rites for Pvt. Norman E. Deo, the first Phillips County man to lose his life in WWII, were held at the Custer Battlefield Memorial cemetery near Hardin on Monday. Sixteen members of the local VFW post, Buster Deo Post 4067, named in his honor, participated in the military rites at the service. Pvt. Deo was stationed on the Corregidor Islands and was killed on April 30, 1942. He enlisted in January 1941; he had landed on the island on April 22. He was 20 years old at the time of his death.

Emil Lundstrom’s dirt-moving crew made the mistake of parking the dirt-moving equipment and camping outfit on the wrong side of the dam they were building to create a stock water reservoir on the Albert Lind place about 15 miles southwest of Landusky.

A cloudburst in the middle of the night sent a flash flood down a canyon and the dam worked. It worked so well that the big caterpillar tractor and all machinery were soon underwater. Two men sleeping in the trailer house were awakened by the water sloshing around the floor. They barely made it to safety ahead of the rapidly rising water. By morning the equipment was under 18 feet of water, the trailer house was partially afloat and a big truck, bouyed up an empty tank, was floating in the newly created lake.

Lundstrom is still figuring out a way to recover his machinery. He can’t fish it out because the water is too muddy. The dam may have to be cut, he says. In the meantime, he has the truck tied to a tree until it can be brought ashore.

Jernigan’s white-faced range cows, not to be outdone by mothers of the human race or Glacier Park bears, presented her owner with quadruplet calves at the Andy Payne ranch south of Hinsdale Sunday. The big Fourth of July celebration was Malta’s best ever. Malta won a stirring baseball game from the Sheepshearers and also defeated the Shearers in a tug-of-war. The baby contest turned out as expected. There were seven babies competing for the title of “best,” Dr. Clay, the judge, was unable to decide the best and split the prize money between the entrants.

“A girl of the badlands decided to shuffle off but her associates sent out a hurry call for Dr. Clay and he managed to bring her back to terra firma.”
