Hometown boy, Tanner Drabbels, has hit the ground a-running, just out of high school and was now appointed as the Assistant Manager of the local Albertsons.
Building on a strong marriage of 33 years, the Josties, Dale and Lisa, are bringing their gospel music to coffee houses, prisons and Christian gatherings, with their 11 children in tow. They share their music across Canada and the U.S.
McCoy Matthew Mangis was born June 16, 2014, in Spearfish, S.D. to Matt and Lindsey Mangis of Newell, S.D. Grandparents are Craig and Mary Mangis, and great-grandfather is Ned Mangis, of Malta.
Bobbi Knudsen, a starter at MSU-Billings on the basketball team, was headed to Germany to play for the Freiburg Kingfishers, later this year.
Bubby Matte, a resident of the Hi-Line Retirement Center, loves elk and buffalo, and cinnamon bears! The former rancher/mechanic enjoys the 4th of July, hunting and listening to his favorite Hank Williams, Sr.
The M-ettes basketball camp kicked off with 27 young ladies hungry to learn more about the game of basketball and what it takes to become an M-ette. Coach Nate Hammond was assisted by Coach Tyler, M-ettes Darby Schye, Kelsey Kuehn, Rebecca Smith, Markelle Lett and former M-ette standout Bobbi Knudsen.
Katie Mitchell was awarded a $500 scholarship by Jesse Blunt, President of the Phillips County Livestock Association. She was the recipient of the Darryl Seeley Memorial Scholarship.
Collin Holman was the only swimmer to take home a first place ribbon; second place awards went to Jenise Amestoy, Carly Garfield, and Holman, and Reba Doucette earned three second place ribbons.

Ryan LaBrie joined the Montana Army National Guard and will report to Fort Jackson for basic training. He will then travel to Fort Sill, Okla., to continue advanced training. He will return to the MNG as part of Battery C, 1-190th Field Artillery Battalion in Malta.
Louie Oyler earned bantam high point honors at the Malta Swim Meet. Garnering high points for the swim team at Scobey were Stormy Adams, LeeAnn Pekovitch and Christina Armstrong.
Donna Lowney and Dan Duncan invite family and friends to their wedding at the Baptist Church on July 17. A reception and dance will follow at Roger’s Banquet Room.
If no one lets the word out, the family would like to surprise Iver and Mavis Johannesen at the Loring Park in celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary. A dance will follow.
Paula Veseth found her month-and-a-half stay in China cut down to a month after demonstrations broke out against Americans. For three days Veseth and her friends were confined to the dorm, Chinese friends brought them food.
Fiddler, rancher, bookkeeper and old cowhand, Ken Truax, was a guest of honor at a party on July 17 at the GN Rose Room. The occasion is his 80th birthday!
Gus Emanuelson will celebrate his 90th birthday on July 24th at the family farm from 1-3 p.m., refreshments will be served.

The Little Rockies Sectional attracted over 100 people for the three-day event; Dr. R. W. Norrbohm, tournament chairman, said the response was so good they are thinking of making it an annual affair.
A daughter, Tricia Lynn, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Komis of St. Paul, MN. The baby is their first child. Mr. and Mrs. Art Komis are the paternal grandparents, and Mr. and Mrs. Miles Henry are the paternal great-grandparents.
Mr. and Mrs. Terry Nesbit are the parents of a baby girl born in Havre, and she has been named Lareen. She joins a sister in the household. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ken Mecklenberg and Mr. and Mrs. Hank Nesbit. Joe Holzhey is the maternal great-grandfather.
Don Andrews took first place in slo barrels and third in barrel and stake at the Havre O-Mok-Sees. Bob Erickson took two third places in pole bending, third in slo barrels and cloverleaf and fourth in arena race. Myrna Erickson got second in cloverleaf and slo barrels and fourth in arena race.
Dr. John Bleeker of Red Lodge got just what he wanted when he requested a “room by the pool” for the bridge tournament held in Malta. Duane Compton made arrangements to pitch a tent by the river with a wading pool to provide the “room with a pool.” This little town is just so darn accommodating!
There were 50 contestants in the Little Britches Rodeo and placing were local riders Darvin Henry, Dan Wiese, Scott Waters, Eric Trow, Jeffrey Waters, Lance Beto, Louis Messerly, Darrel Bergtoll, Ross Simser, Audie Simpson, Dori Bergtoll, Barb Robinson, Sandra Olson, Nancy Oxarart, and Lynne Orahood.

The 1974 Milk River Wagon Train will be dedicated to the late T. B. Long, a long-time cowboy and rancher in Canada and the Malta area.
Dick Schwartz was elected wagon master of the Milk River Wagon Train and Wayne Long as trail boss. Bud Bradley asked to resign as wagon master. The meeting was conducted by Bud Hasler, and Louis Perry, chairman. Schwartz, Franklin Smith and Lloyd Knudsen were named to a committee to choose the route to be followed.
Gene McCracken, hospital administrator, announced that Dr. Jan Ramaiya of Saskatoon, Sask., will come to Malta on a temporary visa to work.

July 7, 1949
A coroner’s jury Wednesday afternoon returned a verdict that Clay Walker, 37, of Malta, came to his death “nine miles north of Saco by an unavoidable accident in an airplane crash.” The brothers crashed a week ago Wednesday evening at their brother’s ranch near Saco.
Les Pancake of Malta won the “best cowboy” award, a bronze horse, in the Saturday afternoon parade in Glasgow.
Plans are now underway for the 34th annual Phillips County Fair according to Edgar Lee, president of the fair board. The fair, which is the oldest fair in Montana, will be August 13 and 14 in Dodson. The rodeo this year, which is said to be the fairest ever presented at the fair, will be under the direction of John Tunnicliff of Red Lodge JXT ranch.
The program will include bareback riding, roping, bulldogging, and some mean Brahma bulls and Texas steers will be on hand. A total of $1,250 in prizes is offered to cowboys for the two-day events.
Horse racing is planned for both days using Phillips County horses. Vic Nordlund is handling the racing events.

Ray Bentzin, already credited with two wins was to pitch another game for Chinook.

Fred Wilson had sold 700 head of old wethers for $4.50 per head.
Miss Mabel Peck had resigned as primary teacher in the Malta school. She was a candidate for county superintendent of schools.
