The bones of John “Liver Eating” Johnson, a colorful Montana pioneer, almost came home to rest, but they didn’t quite make it. Johnson, who gained his reputation fighting Indians in the Montana Territory, died in 1900 in a California Veterans Hospital. A seventh-grade history class in Lancaster, Calif., was studying various mountain men when their teacher told them about “Liver Eating” Johnson and they resolved he should be buried in the area in which he gained fame. Accordingly, they contacted the Veterans Administration for permission and wrote to the mountain states to see where the body should go. The first and keenest interest came from Cody, Wyo., and Montana got into the affair only belatedly, after the VA had given its consent and named the seventh-grade class as “next of kin.” Congressmen and Senators from both Montana and Wyoming got into the fray, but Wyoming was victorious, and the burial was carried out in Cody on Saturday, with movie stars who had taken part in a motion picture of Johnson’s life called, “Jeremiah Johnson” taking part and the Lancaster school students as special guests.
