One Nation, Under God
A local veteran had spearheaded a project and is now looking to expand the collection that is already started. John Barnard, a former member of the US Army National Guard Unit in Malta, felt a need to keep track of those that have served, as well as where they have served. He started collecting patches from various veterans from their tours and assignments and placing them in a display case at the local VFW Post.
Currently, there are 35 patches in the display, from the various branches of the military. The plan is to add to the current ones with any that are not represented. Individuals can donate the patches to the American Legion 57 or may provide them on loan.
Many families have patches in a drawer or box, and are not certain what to do with them. There are some who do not know what the patch signifies. Then there is a question of who will inherit the patches upon the death of the veteran, and this is one way to preserve a memory and keepsake, while honoring the veteran who earned it. There is a program that helps identify the patch, which helps in knowing some of the history of the service of the veteran who was awarded the patch.
There is currently room in the display for additional patches, and a new case will be built at a point in time to facilitate the need.
A list of the ones that are in the display will be available by stopping at the local VFW and asking for a list. A list can also be emailed to you by contacting [email protected] and requesting one. You are also welcome to stop at the VFW and check the display out and see if one you have is already on the board.
At a time when our nation is feeling the pressures of lack of patriotism and apathy, it is even more important to remember those who have served our country and are currently serving.
You can do a small act by assisting in the project and keeping history alive. Barnard would be more than willing to visit with anyone who has questions regarding the project.
There is also a frame for the collection of various pins that have been provided to groups and individuals by various officers and events. If you would like to add to this collection, contact Derek Oshio at the VFW Post or leave a message for him.
