Reese Brown singled in a Bambino League game and later scored from third, thanks to a single from teammate Striker Simanton.

The Waters Family invites everyone to attend the 100th Annual Family Picnic at Trafton Park. The potluck will celebrate 100 years in Montana, with the fun beginning after church.

Malta Elementary is proud to announce the winners of the 2013-2014 Presidential Awards, which recognizes academic success in the classroom for 4th and 5th graders. Receiving the high award were Sidney Meeks, Hayden VanWichen, Marcus Knudsen, Pierce Mortenson, Brett Wiebe, Danie Rhodes, Kylie Hunter, Erica Smith and Annabelle Giblette.

Brylee Blunt arrived June 6 to live with her parents, Keenan and Christi in Shawnee, KS.; her grandparents are Ken and Karen Blunt of Malta.

There was an explanation for what appeared to be a monster or tornado...it was Larry Lloyd’s truck named “The Punisher.” The Ford F-350 clears a quarter mile in under 8 seconds.

Little rubber duckie…you’re the one…

While the races were on thundering through the day, the following day 500 rubber duckies took a 45-minute “race” down the irrigation canal. Placing were: Joe Simons (Turner), Michael Morser and Brandon Caballero of Malta. In the Lame Duck category winners were; Barry Bergis (Canada), Rita Frasure (Billings), Kayla Elkins and Jim Layton of Malta.

The Malta M-ettes volleyball team hosted its annual M-ette Volleyball Camp with 45 girls from fourth through eighth grade present for the event.

Tyler French presented a certificate with an American Flag to the Phillips County Commissioners; he had recently achieved the Rank of Captain in the U. S. Air Force.

The biggest news to hit the county for a long time was going up in smoke as was the Stockman Bar, Mustang Lanes and Jerry’s Barber Shop, burned in the middle of the night. (*no updates from the file case)

The Phillips County Ambulance Service is promoting “Personal Safety” among children by teaching them how to live risk-free and avoid accidents and injury. Service Director Charlene Lamb stated, “Children are killed or permanently disabled at the rate of one every 7 1/2 minutes.”

Katie Weber was surrounded by her family in celebration of being pinned as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Joining her were her mom, Marcia, cousin, Stacey Warburton, uncles Don and Jim, and aunt, Lynne Nevrivy.

Barbara Cowan, homemaker and cook from Loring, shared her famous recipe for Raised & Honey-Dipped Donuts.

Those were the days.

Greg Kelsey kept folks enthralled with a demonstration on how to make arrowheads. He was part of the group putting together the Lewis and Clark Encampment at the James Kipp State Park. Brenda Rummel, who helped organize the encampment said there were over 400 who signed the guest book over the three days.

Trenton Starkey made the local news while attending the races held by the Hi-Line Motocross five miles west of Malta. His dad, Tim, was providing support from the sidelines.

Bruce Contway, the grandson of both Myrtle Holte and the late Rose Contway, is one of five top finalists to compete in creating a bronze for the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. He was named the Indian Artist of the Year in 1998.

Clark Kelly was selected to succeed retiring Bob Michael, as the Phillips County Youth Probation Officer, by District Judge John McKeon of the 17th Judicial District.

Diane Smith, beautician, had sold her business to Jeanne Nylander, and was hanging up her scissors in retirement.

A 1974 model pickup owned by Henry Halvorson of Saco was badly damaged when it was gutted by fire Sunday evening. The pickup was parked in front of the home of Halvorson’s sister, Mrs. Inglef Schwartz. (* this was a brand new model!)

At the closing of the election polls, Incumbent Sheriff Messerly won the republican nomination in a tight race in the primary election. He will run against Newton E. Cummings who ran unopposed in the Democratic nomination. Messerly beat out Ralph Young and Clifford Rustad.

Lyle Cochran of Malta was named all-around cowboy last weekend during the Harlem Chuck Wagon Days Rodeo, winning $417 in prize money. He took first in calf roping with a time of 9.34 and won $255.15, and took second in team roping. Clinton Cox of Whitewater was second in the kid’s calf roping and received $9.75.

Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Ruud announce the engagement of their daughter, Charlene, to Bruce Williams, son of Mrs. Leona Stevens of Augusta. They plan to wed on July 20 in Mammoth Chapel in Mammoth Hot Springs.

Five young youth of the Malta BB-gun team earned a trip to compete in the ninth annual International Championship Matches in Manchester, N.H. in July. Winning were local young ladies, Chele Tonn and Zane Tams, and young men Rick Robinson, Ray Henderson, and David Keitel.

Malta’s temporary drought is about to be relieved. Tuesday a test was made of the new city well and Contractor Robert Simpson reported a flow of 860 gallons per minute with a two-foot drawdown. The old well, which has been faithfully supplying the city for the past 35 years, is as good as ever.

Come on out to the County Fairgrounds on June 8 for Donkey Baseball, sponsored by the Legion and Auxiliary. Starting time is 7:30 P.M. Admission for children is 25 cents, and adults is 75 cents, tax included.

The “Big Parade” for which all of Malta has been waiting for is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Sponsored by the Jaycees, the streets will be lined with military drill teams, clubs, decorated bicycles, kids on ponies, and various business floats. Dave LaFond, George Pancake, and Pete Dobson are parade directors and promise a real treat.

Announcement of the March 17 marriage of Miss June Cavanaugh and Earl J. Hannon of Great Falls was made this week by Mrs. May Cavanaugh of Malta, mother of the bride. The wedding took place in Fort Benton. The bride graduated from Columbus Hospital of Nursing on May 22. The bridegroom is a veteran of World War II, he plans to attend college next fall.

Traffic Violations: Knute Olson forfeited a $5 bond on a driver’s license violation; Bernie Sandlie, Jr., was fined $150 and his license for one year on a charge of guilty while intoxicated; Jerome Ellery was fined $150 and his license revoked for one year on a drunken driving charge.

The Bowdoin dome was regarded by oil men as a good bet and leasing was being done over the entire area. The Phillips County Oil and Gas had turned its 30,000 acres over to E. B. Coolidge. The carbon black content of the gas stuck in wells drilled previously was regarded as valuable.

Congratulations to Esther Bostrom on her graduation from Malta High School.

John Ivanovitch purchased the J. Nelson schoolhouse and will move it to his new place soon.

George Clanton had enclosed his residential property in town with a fine picket fence.

The Rebekah’s had received a half dozen folding tables and some social evenings were in prospect. Dr. George W. Clay and Max Sklower had offered to teach the ladies the game.
