One Nation, Under God

I Don't Even Recognize a Space in my Own House

My wife is amazing.

Like many other occupations, I can’t always take a day off on holidays that fall on a Monday. This was the case for Memorial Day.

I do however try to hustle and get things done so that my staff and I have the option to go home early.

This year, I did get things wrapped up early, and was excited to spend time with my family.

I entered the garage to find a lot of things in our enclosed back porch were in our garage or on the backyard.

I had no idea what was going on. So I stepped into the porch to find Susan painting and the boys enjoying a dip in the kiddie pool.

Of course, I was beat from grinding the newspaper out and if there was a chore that I despise more than others, it is painting!

Honestly, that back porch was due for a redo. My hard-working wife knew that I would be at work, so she took it upon herself to tackle the project.

Again, hating painting, I sat down and tried to at least be talkative. I was nearly useless. I give myself only a little credit for moving things around.

After she was done for the day, I overheard her say how much she hated painting…

For years, in fact since marrying her, I thought that the love of my life loved painting! So, to hear her talking about how much she hated painting made me feel closer to her.

She continued to work on the project this past week and even painted the floor. It was the first time that the back porch had been fully renovated since we moved into the house in 2012.

It looks amazing! I have been proud of Susan for many reasons during our time together, but this project was next level.

We have had many evenings of sitting in that porch area, but the area was always a little chaotic given my various smokers and yard supplies.

Now, it looks more peaceful and inviting. Despite my disdain for painting, it goes to show that a new coat can change the whole complexity of a room.
