It is going to be a revved-up weekend in town as the 11th Annual Car Show hosted by the First State Bank, along with the PCMS drag strip races, would add excitement, bright cars and perhaps a little noise to the village of Malta. And don’t forget people…the weekend will bring in visitors from many states and Canada.

Two Whitewater Penguins and a pair of Dodson Coyotes unleashed upon Great Falls for the State Track and Field meet. Kourtney Simonson set a new personal and school best in the 400. Jeret Warren, also beat his previous best in the 1600, posting a time of 4:42, “which seems almost super-human.” Dodson’s Nick Bear and Raven Bear competed, but they, like the Penguins, failed to post points.

Leo Woods, a former janitor, shared his favorite meal was chicken fried steak, watching TV with his dog and listening to North to Alaska by Johnny Horton in the background. He was highlighted as the “Senior Spotlight” of the week.

Graduating seniors, Meghan Johnson and Bethany Jaynes, donated 16 and 10 inches of hair respectively, to be made into wigs for cancer patients through “Locks of Love.” Beautician Sue Kaluza had the honor of sending the locks off.

The family of Jim and Pat Murdock invite family and friends to celebrate the 60th anniversary and renewal of vows; the celebration will be at the Whitewater Church.

The Phillips Village apartments are under new management with Scott Peigneux and Melissa Campbell.

The family of Pearl Skinner extended an invitation to come celebrate her 90th birthday with them at the GN Lodge room.

Hazel Ohs will be the guest of honor at a celebration of her 90th birthday, a reception will be held at the Malta Community Church.

A Michigan man pled not guilty to a string of thefts, break-ins, and evidence tampering after a rash of incidents in Malta. He was charged with three felonies for his wild nights on the town.

Ken and Bonnie Wiederrick proudly announced the engagement of their daughter, Patience, to Timothy Wiltse. A private family ceremony is planned for October, with an open reception to follow.

The Malta M-ettes placed eighth at the State Track and Field Meet in Butte. Placing were Jada Nicholson and Darby Schye; Sophia Stiles brought home the gold, having placed in four of the five events she competed in.

June 2, 1999

Robert Walsh, 59, entered a plea of guilty on Jan 2 in District Court, to charges of sexual assault, a felony, against a minor under the age of 16 years of age. District Judge David Cybulski sentenced Walsh to a term of 20 years with the last 10 years being suspended. He will be required to register for the rest of his lifetime as a sexual offender. He was given credit for 216 days in jail and transferred to Montana State Prison to serve the rest of his time.

Kaylee Weyrauch, a seventh grader at Saco Middle School, was chosen as the May Student of the Month. Also selected was Ammeniek Crotto, a senior at Saco High School.

The US Achievement Academy announced that Cole Hammond from Saco has been named an All-American Scholar. The program recognizes superior students who excel in academic disciplines.

Nathan Fried signed an NAIA-Frontier Conference letter of intent to play college ball for Western Montana College.

Participating in 4-H demonstration competition in the Beginning Junior age division were Paul Warren, Chance Demarais, Ashley Shippen, Ceri Demarais, Kristin Engebretson, Justin Majerus, Kellie Kolczak, Cole Murdock, Jennifer Majerus, and Jared Holman. Engebretson won the overall trophy.

Phillips County’s high school students weren’t the only ones winning medals this spring. The athletes at Malta Opportunities brought home a lot of gold medals around their necks from the Special Olympics Games held in Bozeman. Pictured in the PCN were Tony Andrews, Annie Jefferson, Mona Stenswick, Donnie Nielson, Virginia Hillman, Zane Armstrong, Jack Stenswick, Eldon Kilsdonk, Regene Shields, Andy Mord and John Baysinger. Also listed for placing were Walter American Horse, Robert Armstrong, Larry Cornell, and Regina Spotted Wolf.

Students that made the Spring Semester Honor Roll were Tawnya Morrison, Loring; Mollie Forbes, Saco; and Eric Ottinger, Jenifer Simanton, Stephanie Simanton and Julie Bruckner, all of Malta.

Bethany Atchley, Shayley Bebee and Erica McKeon, all of Malta, were named to the University of Mary’s Dean’s List for the Spring Semester.

Melissa Cochell received a $1,000 Haynes Foundation from Montana State University-Billings. Cochell is a freshman majoring in Business.

An honor guard composed of local National Guard members were pictured shown in parade dress during the ceremonies held at the Malta Cemetery honoring veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation.

Linda Stine and Vince Taylor were married by Rev. Joel Nelson, in an afternoon ceremony.

Charles Lucas, a freshman at Northern Montana College in Havre, has received the Farmers Union Marketing and Processing Association scholarship. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Lucas, majoring in farm and ranch management.

Mr. And Mrs. Henry Hanson announce the engagement of their daughter, Greta, to Norman Barnard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Barnard. A July wedding is planned.

In the vital statistics, a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Hines of Wagner.

The Malta unit of the Montana National Guard placed first in the Regimental Postal Rifle matches. Ed Gjersing was the highest individual in the matches and was a member of the first-place team of himself, Willard Arnold, Jerry Hanson, Larry Olson and Roger Odgen.

The Cottonwood Grazing Association is set for June 1. Bring your own noon lunch. Rocky Mountain Oysters Fry and Beef BBQ for those who help clean up. Wives bring potluck. Followed by a dance, and music by The Blue Notes. Public invited.

Clint Mayes of Sidney is reported in good condition at the Malta hospital after suffering burns on a hand and foot when the machine he was operating made contact with an overhead energized line while he was working on the REA line south of Malta. Mayes was operating a digger and the boom on the machine hit the energized line. George Hoynes, manager of Big Flat reported that as a result of the accident, a transformer on the generator was burned out and power was cut off to those communities receiving power from the generator.

A marriage license application was applied for by Bruce Boothe, 20, Wagner, and Denise Maloney, 20, Malta.

The Phillips Area news reporter wrote, “RAIN, RAIN, AND more RAIN! What a welcome rain it is. The area has truly been blessed this year.”

Maureen Holman and Cindy Bebee are among 131 education seniors at Eastern Montana College in Billings who are completing student teaching assignments in elementary, junior high and senior high school this week.

Members of the Jolly Workers 4-H Club attended the Malta Lutheran Church in observance of Rural Life Sunday.

Plans are shaping up for the Little Britches Rodeo scheduled for Saturday, July 6, reports Lonnie Badger, secretary of the Phillips County Sheriff’s Posse. The Posse is sponsoring the event for the first time in Phillips County.

Tiny, a 3-year-old trained jumping horse will be the entertainment at the Malta Spring Rodeo on June 4 and 5. Tiny is only 42 inches tall but captivates audiences with his specialty of jumping over other horses.

The Montana Highway Patrol again warned drivers to be careful this weekend. Do you want a headstone in ‘50? There are several different approaches by which a person can get his name carved in granite, and the family car is one of the most effective tools to accomplish this. The cars on the highway will be driven by capable and less than capable drivers, healthy and sick, sober and in various stages of inebriation, tired and angry people.

The construction of a 1000-ton cyanide mill at Ruby Gulch was announced by M. L. Hewitt who had taken a two-year lease of the mine. The old mill had been destroyed by fire the previous year. The new mill was expected to cost $180,000.

More than 200 Royal Neighbors and Modern Woodsmen from Malta, Saco and Dodson attended a zone meeting in Malta. On the entertainment committee were Dave Dutro, John Ebaugh, J. F. Murray and Milton Porter.

The Miners Union at Zortman was preparing to celebrate Union Day on June 13.

The First State Bank was prepared to provide loans to businessmen and stockmen on approved paper, it was announced. Geo. L. Ramsey was president, C. F. Morris, was vice president; and they with G. W. Clay, Alex Elliot and W. A. Clark, the latter of Virginia City, were directors.
