Malta golfer, Keenan VanWichen took the top honors of the 16th Annual Jack Brogan Memorial Golf Tournament at Marian Hills. He followed the footsteps of his brother, Spencer, who won the tournament twice in previous years. The tournament opened with “Amazing Grace” played on the bagpipes by Dr. Mike Gibson of Havre.
Malta didn’t just hire any “Average Joe” for the job. Former standout coach and Athletic Director, Scott King, informed Nick Oxarart he is Malta’s newest head coach. Nick Oxarart will be the first coach in over half a century, to be born and raised in Malta.
The Phillips County Rural Fire Department received a $25,000 grant from BNSF Railway Foundation. Rural Fire Chief Mike Flatt said the money will be spent to purchase a pump for a truck that was previously purchased.
Gaylord LaFond, turning 98 years young, enjoyed his birthday with family and friends.
Mae Walsh, the Senior with the Spotlight shining brightly, said horses were her favorite animal. The former ranch wife and cook for the Matador enjoys spending time with her grandkids. She will quickly tell you her favorite song is by George Jones, “I Don’t Need Your Rocking Chair.” Mae’s favorite book is the Bible.
Results for the Malta Golf Team were Eli Waters, Keenan VanWichen, Garrett Zanto, Jase Galt and Tyler Ost with a score of 363-373--736; while the girls Tyanna Dunbar, Taryn Shores, Cyra Mears, Kelsey Kuehn and Kristi Granlund scored 493-486--979.
The M-ettes did more than fine at the Northern B Track and Field meet in Great Falls. They not only showed up, they also placed second, thanks to seven individual athletes who placed in events.
Zach Handley addressed his fellow classmates and crowd at the 2014 Malta High School graduation. Handley is the valedictorian of his class.

Of the 10 children of Raymond Korb, eight were able to attend their father’s 90th birthday; the celebration was held in Lewistown. One daughter was unable to attend and one is deceased.
LeeAnn Pekovitch won three events, Mariah Guilfoyle won two, Emily DeMars won one, and Stacy Nevrivy won one to win the District 2B title in Glasgow. The Malta’s boys squad upset Wolf Point by one point to take the boys’ title. Tim Chell placed first in events, as did Jason MacKay. In the triple jump Malta had a strong showing where they claimed five of six places.
The Malta Chapter of the National Honor Society hosted the annual staff appreciation breakfast. The project has been a community service of the NHS for over 20 years.
Whitewater High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian for 1999 are Ashley Hammond and Sara Fear, respectively.
Brad Marshall of Saco earned the All-Around title at the two-day Cohagen High School rodeo over the weekend. Matt Mangis of Malta took first place for both days in the saddle bronc while Jesse Benson also participated.
Mayor Byron Ereaux signed a proclamation recognizing Arbor Day at the prompting of the Malta Dirt Daubers Garden Club represented by Hulda Grant and Jane Ereaux. They celebrated the event a week late because of the recent rains.
Saco High School announced that Brooke Beadle is the valedictorian for the Class of 1999. Salutatorian is Kris Eklund.
Toni Marie Hould has been accepted into the graduate degree program at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. A 1995 graduate of Malta High School, she is the daughter of Bruce and Linda Hould.
Jeff Freeman of Saco cleared the high jump bar at the District 3-C meet with a leap of 5-6 to claim fourth place.
Warren O.J. Abrahamson has filed to run for the Malta City Council from Ward II, filing as an “independent.” Incumbents Karl Harms, Ward II, and Bill Crowder, Ward I, have already filed for re-election as Republicans.
In an effort to convince the voters to vote for the mill levy when it is voted on again, the Malta School Board will be hosting a public forum with questions and answers. Curtis Starr will serve as the moderator at the forum.
Brenda Murdock and Greg Kornfeld extend an invitation to their union in marriage to be held at the Murdock Ranch on June 5.

Ross Wyman Frazier pled guilty in District Court to criminal possession of dangerous drugs, a felony. Judge Dignan sentenced him to a two-year deferred sentence, and he will be under the jurisdiction of the State Board of Pardons during the time.
Thirteen graduating seniors of Dodson High School received their diplomas at commencement. They are Julia Minugh, Linda Pancake, Melody Larson, Cathy Johnson, Michele Cole, Jackie Jones, Steve Majusiak, Michael Adams, David Phillips, Richard Wilke, William Rock, Carl Lundstrom and Leslie Munson.
W. E. “Polly” Southwick was the guest of honor at “Polly Recognition Day” at the Malta Lutheran Church. Polly was thanked for his many good and faithful years of service as choir director.
A fly-in breakfast of the Malta Pilot’s Association was postponed until this week due to the rainy weather. It will be held Sunday at the Bud Johnson farm. Breakfast will be followed by a business meeting and election of officers.
The Malta Knights of Columbus have started a fund for the Richard Williamson family. Williamson suffered a heart attack and will be unable to work for three months. The Williamsons have four children and two foster children.
Funeral services were held for W. F. Hardin, 83, a resident of Phillips County for nearly 3/4 of a century. W. E. Southwick, accompanied by Mabel Flesche, sang “Crossing the Bar” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Pallbearers were Edwin Johnston, William Cotter, Clarence Mikkelson, Steve Granat, Gene Seel and Pete Dobson.
O. P. Norman, retired Dodson farmer, has been missing since he disappeared from the Warm Springs State Hospital on May 10. Walter Norman of Dodson reports that his 84-year-old father was last seen as he was leaving the hospital dining room.
Ray Shores was pictured in the June 1974 “Outdoor Life” magazine with a paddlefish he had caught.
Marlene Hanson and Nancy Hanson are Saco High Schools’ valedictorian and salutatorian. They graduated with classmates Linda Bryson, Diane Erickson, Patti Rudie, Florence Pekovitch, Bonita Shipp, Ernie Marinko, Lee Wolfe, Dale Marshall, Jay Yeska, Raymond Morin, Steven Plouffe and Greg Christopherson.

Certificates of citizenship were issued to three women at the regular naturalization day in district court here Monday. New citizens are Barbara Kovach of Loring, Josephine Hillier of Malta and Malvina Longpre of Dodson.
In court proceedings a civil case was filed by the male of a marriage, asking for the bonds existing between the plaintiff and respondent be dissolved due to “cruelty to the plaintiff by the respondent for a period of more than one year last past.”
The Montana Highway Patrol Supervisor E. H. (Jack) England was reminding motorists that a good way to become a statistic and a fond memory to loved ones is to drive like an ordinary driver. The three-day Memorial holiday will have many cars with drivers that are less than capable, sick, inebriated, tired and angry drivers. “Don’t be a ‘Headstone in ‘50.”

Phillips County law officers had killed two birds with one stone by apprehending an auto theft and discovering a big moonshine still all in one day. While searching the north country for James Koble, 16-year-old Missouri youth who attempted to steal Carl Veseth’s Buick sedan, officers ran into a 50-gallon still being operated by M. G. McCoy. McCoy showed up at the still with two barrels of water while the officers disposed of several barrels of mash, confiscated 23 gallons of moonshine and took Mr. McCoy back to town with them. Justice Costner fixed his bond at $750.
William Bartz, 22-year-old member of a Great Northern bridge crew, was killed instantly when he stepped in front of the skidoo. Several persons witnessed the accident.

“That sidewalks are not needed in Malta is evidenced by the fact that wading is good and there is plenty of it,” quipped the Enterprise editor.
Several cars of a work train had been derailed at the stockyards. An extra gang worked all day in a drenching rain to get the cars back on the track.
For nearly two weeks rain had fallen almost continuously. Sheepmen were having difficulty, but the cattlemen were predicting a fine grass year.
The Malta Women’s Club was organized. Mrs. L. C. Edwards was president; Mrs. Dwight Jones, vice-president; Mrs. D. C. Kenyon, secretary and Mrs. Max Sklower, treasurer.
