Sorlie Wins Northern B Title, Golfers Head to State

The Malta Golf Teams competed in the 2024 Northern B Divisional meet last Monday, May 6, but the meet ended abruptly due to weather in Glasgow.

"We're pretty proud of our kids' resiliency through the weather at divisonals!" Malta Head Coach Kate Webb told the PCN.

The teams got in nine holes on Monday, and then upon checking the course on Tuesday, the course was deemed unplayable.

Due to the scores that the golf teams posted on Monday, five Malta golfers punched their ticket to the State B Golf Meet in Shelby.

Malta's Brittney Sorlie became Malta's newest divisional champion, tying with Shelby's Penelope Heaton. Both golfers had 48 strokes. Fairview's Allison Jenson was third with 50 strokes.

Malta's Emree Stuart tied for tenth place with 56 strokes and teammate Kylie Bishop also punched her ticket with a score that qualified her individually. Bishop was tied for twelfth with 57 strokes.

Amelia Johanessen had 88 strokes and due to Malta's team finish will compete at state for team scoring. The M-ettes finished fourth in the team standings, taking the final spot in running for state qualification.

Regan Stuart, an eighth-grader, was Malta's lone Mustang to punch a ticket to the state meet. Stuart had 43 strokes and tied for seventh place.

Kellen Murray had 50 strokes, Hunter Stolem had 53 strokes, Kruise Stiles had 53 strokes, and Michael Love had 56 strokes.

It was not an easy 9 holes in the rain, cold, and wind but the kids didn't give up," Coach Webb said. "It's disappointing that our kids didn't get a true 18 hole round. It's tough to not get a break with a back nine when you're front nine didn't go the way you planned, that set up of playing 18 holes makes it a little more forgiving by giving you that opportunity to come back.

"We are thankful however for the opportunity to have been able to compete, and we are so proud of how the kids carried themselves through the challenge," Coach Webb continued. "We had some kids who were able to come out ahead and are excited to be able to compete at State!"
