Malta Track Teams Compete at District Meet

The Malta Mustang and M-ette Track Teams are sending several athletes to the Northern B Divisional Meet in Glasgow on Friday, May 17.

Both teams will be sending 11 athletes to the Northern B.

The teams competed at the 2B District Meet last Saturday, May 11. The M-ettes finished third in the team standings with 107 points in the Womens' Meet. The Mustangs were fourth in the Mens' Meet with 66 points.

Glasgow won the Mens' and Womens' Meet. The Lady Scotties scored 219 points, and the Scotties scored 212 points. Both Fairview teams placed second and both scored 116 points in their respective meets.

The top six in each event punched their ticket to divisionals, and the top six from divisionals will head to state.

M-ettes

The Malta M-ettes swept the throwing event championship titles. The team is taking four javelin throwers, three shot putters, and three discus throwers are heading to divisionals.

The Malta M-ettes were led by senior Giona Lamb, who placed in all three of her events. She won shot put with a throw of 35-2. She was second in javelin with a season record throw of 103-5 and fourth in discus with a throw of 92-2. At the time of the meet, Lamb was the only Malta athlete to pre-qualify for state thanks to a throw in shot put earlier in the year.

Prior to her shot put event, the PCN caught up with Lamb and asked what her approach would be.

"I think that I just need to have speed going across the ring and really open my chest up when I throw that shot," Lamb said.

Lamb has now qualified for the Northern B javelin event for four straight years.

"I am just going to go and have fun with it next week," Lamb said.

Sophomore Kendall Clausen took first place in javelin with a season record throw of 106-05. She was also fifth in high jump after clearing 4-4.

Clausen was asked how she was able to find success in javelin at the 2B meet.

"My goal was probably just to throw far and make it to divisionals," Clausen said. "I said a little prayer, hoped for the best and it went well."

Clausen was asked what it was like to see four M-ettes qualify for divisionals.

"It is really good because we all work hard and want to go to divisionals," Clausen said. "It was Coach Shyla's first year coaching javelin, so it is cool for her to have four girls go to divisionals."

Sophomore Denvyr Tuss took first place in discus with a throw of 104-0. She was also third in shot put with a throw of 34-0.

Sophomore Neva Jacobson took second in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best of 17.85 seconds. She was also sixth in long jump after leaving a mark at 14-0.

Brooklyn Knowles was third in javelin with a throw of 98-0, tying her personal best.

The short relay consisting of Knowles, Jacobson, Kenzie LaBrie, and Addison Ulrich placed third with a time of 55.34.

The long relay consisting of Knowles, Jacobson, Addison Ulrich, and Karlie LaBrie was third with a time of 4:48.11.

Ulrich, a senior, was fourth in the 100 meter dash with a season record of 13.58 seconds. She was also sixth in the 400 with a personal best of 1:09.19.

Freshman Emma Ereaux was fourth in long jump with a personal best of 14-2.50. Ereaux was also fifth in pole vault after clearing 7-6.

After finding out that she qualified in long jump, Ereaux was asked about it.

"It was fun and I PR'd by quite a bit," Ereaux said. "I just really wanted to make it to divisionals and I decided that I needed to try my best and get a PR, and I did."

Freshman Carly Mears was fourth in pole vault after tying her personal best of 8-0.

Sophomore Miquela Red Eagle was fourth in javelin with a throw of 97-3, a new personal best.

Junior Ava Hanson was sixth in shot put with a personal best of 29-3

Mustangs

The Mustangs were led by junior Mason Simanton who won high jump by clearing 5-8. He was also sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.93 seconds and sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.35.

Junior Bohdi Brenden took second place in the 400 with a PR of 53.60. Brenden was third in high jump after clearing a personal best of 5-6. He was also sixth in long jump with a leap of 17-9.5.

Senior Gavin Slade was second in javelin with a throw of 155-5.

Sophomore TJ Siewing was third in shot put with a throw of 42-3.

Sophomore Trooper Stiles was third in pole vault by clearing 9-6 and sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:24.40.

"I thought I was getting over 10-0 but I got caught on the way down," Stiles said.

Stiles was asked how he would approach things at divisionals.

"I got a new pole, so it's a little bit longer which will help. I get less bend out of it and I was getting too much bend out of my other one."

He was asked how it felt to qualify for divisionals in his first year of track.

"I'm pretty excited, a little bit nervous," Stiles said.

Sophomore Kael Young was fifth in pole vault by clearing 8-6 and fifth in the 400 with a time of 57.42.

The short relay consisting of Jackson Bleth, Rylee Brusse, Michael Mayer, and Tripp Lefdahl took fifth place with 47.05.

The long relay consisting of Brenden, Sonny Gray, Treyton Wilke, and Stiles was fourth with a time of 4:04.19.
