It seemed like bad luck was the only kind of luck that Beth Casebolt attracted. Between a broken leg, house remodel repairs, and a black mold diagnosis in their home, Beth was diagnosed with cancer. On the bright side, she and her husband Garry were closing in on the process of adopting their granddaughter, Emma. A benefit to aid her was set up.
The Malta School Board was updated on the new boiler system that will be installed at the elementary school this summer. The estimated budget for the project is $95,000.
Gregory Solberg, son of Orvin and Thea Solberg, was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel in the Church of the Lutheran Brethren at Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church in Rolette, ND. His parents, his mother-in-law, Elaine Stannebein and his grandmother, Eva Solberg, also attended the ordination.
New Public Works Director for the City of Malta, James Brown, attended the Council meeting and thanked the Council for naming him to the position.
Whitewater is home to the newly selected “Most Distinguished Women,” after the pageant on Saturday evening. Kourtney Simonson and Kaycee Howard tied for the honors, and both will represent Malta at the state level in Butte in August.
Freshman Sophia Stiles placed first in each of the five events she attempted. Darby Schye gained a district crown with her effort in the shot put, tossing 35’5”; teammate Shay Garfield placed fifth in the event with a toss of 30’3”. Marley Manoukian placed in three events, Jada Nicholson placed in high jump, Mary Grace Kalal, Adrianna Bibeau and Riley Mortenson contributed points to bring the Malta tracksters to second place at Glasgow.
New owners of the Sleeping Buffalo Resort, Dennis and Michelle Simpson are no strangers to the hot spring business, having purchased another hot springs in Bozeman previously. Being married for just a little over a year, the two bought the Sleeping Buffalo as a wedding gift to each other.
Rapid shopper, Terri Skiff, made the most of her two-minute shopping spree at Albertson’s. In her race against the ticking clock, she amassed $431.83 worth of groceries.

Malta Dirt Daubers member Hazel Ohs got assistance from Lacey Mackay and Mrs. Freitag’s class for the annual planting of flowers at the Good Samaritan Center.
Winners in the various classes of the annual Gary Bebee Memorial Fiddler’s Contest were Jessica Hendrickson of Loring and Lynn Cummings of Malta.
Shonda Jenkins, a self-proclaimed “geek”, donned her cap and gown for graduation, and graduated with the honor of having 12 years of perfect attendance at school…not a bad record to hold, at all.
Malta’s Mariah Guilfoyle set a new divisional record in the 100-meter race at the North East Divisional Track meet held in Glasgow.
County kids making the MSU-Northern spring honor roll were Matthew Chell, Chad Hasler, Heather Losleben and Jackie Salveson.
Janessa Bebee, a graduate of the Big Sky Somatic Institute in Helena, is now a licensed Massage Practitioner and plans to set up her practice in Malta. She is the daughter of Dennis and Joy Bebee of Malta.
Even though it was a bit late, the Malta Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Joe’s In and Out, with new owners Dale and Sherry Salveson. Present were chamber president Lonnie Link and Bob Galt, director.
Malta has three Knights of Columbus State Champions. Crowned were Jolene Fuzesy, girls age 13, who shot 23 of 25; D.J. Kovach, boys age 10, who shot 22 of 25; and Katie Weber, girls age 14, who shot 22 out of 25.
Kristen Wiederrick of Malta was among 127 students graduating from Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Wiederrick, she earned her degree in Elementary Education.
A letter to the editor following the school forum meeting at the high school stated Supt. Parker had provided possible ways to cut expenses if the mill levy did not pass. He shared cutbacks including cut athletics - cross country and golf; cut transportation including extracurricular and all staff travel; reduce the number of copiers in district; and equalizing junior high sports- which could involve cutting a boys sport.
At the Terry, Montana rodeo, Brad Marshall, Matt Mangis and Jesse Benson performed in the calf roping, bare-back riding and steer wrestling events. They each had better days and results.
The Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) recognized Stephanie Lynn and Joanna Skiff with certificates as top math students in Montana. They are students at Malta High School.
Graduating with degrees from MSU-Northern were Justin Lorn Anderson, Chris Doucette, Sandra Olson, Theodore Schye and Kathie Waters from Malta; Jodell Bryson and Tanya Funk from Saco; and Harold Hoff, Jr. and Robert McMullen from Whitewater.
The trial for a Malta man charged with three counts of sexual intercourse without consent will begin June 2 in the 17th Judicial District Court in Malta. The trial of Robert Walsh, 59, will be presided over by Judge Cybulski of Plentywood.
Whitewater speedster Joe Cartright raced to two first-place individual finishes and ran legs on two winning relays for the Penguins at last week’s Eastern C divisional Track Tournament in Sidney. The team claimed second behind Medicine Lake.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Shores held a surprise 40th-anniversary party in their honor. It was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Ike Knudsen of Glasgow, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Shores and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Shores of Malta.
Fern Taylor was presented with a diamond lapel for being a Firestone dealer.
Tom Duncan, manager of the DY Bar, entered a complaint at the sheriff’s office that a person had fired several shots at the bar building during an altercation early Sunday morning. He told Pete Messerly, county sheriff, that several shots were fired at the building and one shot was fired at him as he went across the yard from the bar to his house. The person firing the shots was with a group. The incident is under investigation.
Malta students were well represented at the College of Great Falls annual convocation last week. Douglas Kaufman won the $750 Cobb Foundation scholarship presented to a Montana native with an all-over scholastic achievement. Gerard VanHoudt received a $300 scholarship from the Montana Knights of Columbus and Robert Wiprud received a $150 scholarship from the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
Malta Boxers scored nine wins out of 12 bouts at the boxing smoker at the city hall. Members scored two TKOs during the match. Heavyweight Jean Green had a TKO over Dan Wall of Lewistown in round 3 of their fight. Doug Simanton scored a TKO in round 1 over Jess Douglas of Wolf Point.
Dr. R. M. Wiprud and Dan Snider were presented with special awards for their help to the Malta Boxing Club during the past year. Curt Reynolds, a young boxer, was presented with this year’s sportsmanship trophy by the club.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Broadbrooks announced the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Roxann Lee, to Dwayne Simanton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne Simanton, Sr.
Mrs. Dale Edmister, president of the Malta Women’s Club, presented Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rundle with a check for their interest in furthering the park bench project.
Malta Jaycees Robert Soper, Ken Larson and Ron Meredith were instructing a class in hunter safety.
Mrs. Dixon Grant was installed as president of the VFW Auxiliary, Mrs. Sam Carlson (Senior Vice President), Mrs. Sylvester Clouse (Junior Vice President), Mrs. Harold Schmoeckel (Conductress), Mrs. Joan Knofle (Chaplain), Mrs. Louie Stuff (Treasurer), and Mrs. Hilda Bostrom (Guard).

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lucht are the proud parents of a son born May 12 in Havre. He was named Gordon Bruce, his weight was 7 lbs. 4 oz.
A surprise birthday party was held for Florence Milks on her birthday last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. George Armstrong, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Mans and boys, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Watson and boys, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Mans and boys, Miss Dell Wilson, Mrs. William Spencer and children and Mr. and Mrs. Adam Koss attended the party.
Congratulations are extended to Fern Oxarart for being picked as the Queen of the Rodeo.
The FFA boys and FHA girls are planning a picnic at the plunge for Thursday. The girls are going to furnish the lunch and boys the transportation.
A fire at the city dump south of town called out the city fire department Thursday noon last week. The wind was from a northerly direction. The flames were spreading toward the George Armstrong property, but quick action on the firemen prevented any loss.
The spring district meetings of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary are scheduled to be held in Dodson on May 22. The joint banquet will be served by the ladies of the Auxiliary. Musical entertainment will include the Boos sisters, Wilma Munson, Anna Woods, Lenora Ramberg and Anita Sorkness, all Dodson girls.
The firm of Van Teylingen, Knight and Van Teylingen, architects, has been retained to draw up plans for Malta’s new grade school building and physical education department at the Malta High School. Preliminary plans are expected to be ready in about two weeks.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hockett near Content was destroyed by fire with the loss of all contents.
Frank Kramer had been arrested by Undersheriff Ray Campbell and Deputy Jim Sammons on a charge of possessing intoxicating liquor. The officers had trapped the man by going to the riverbank on the north side of town, whistling a signal and waiting for Kramer’s arrival, via rowboats, with a supply of intoxicants. Kramer was alleged to have been serving his customers in such a manner for some time. He was somewhat surprised to discover the officers had learned his signal whistle. His bond was fixed at $750 by Judge Harry Cosner.
The St. Anthony and Dakota Elevator at Wagner was totally destroyed by fire thought to have been caused by spontaneous combustion. Harry McConnel was the manager.
Mrs. Senie Jones, charged with first-degree assault in connection with the shooting of Nan Spencer, a housekeeper at the “Tennessee” Jones farm, had been released on $5,000 bond and had departed for her home in Tennessee.

Thomas B. Wright, who had been employed at the Phillips ranch for about four years, committed suicide by plunging a pair of sheep shears into his throat and chest several times.
The Great Northern Hotel was installing a new and complete water system.
Vernon W. Armington, the 4-year-old son of Mrs. W.F. Setz, was killed instantly when he was struck in the chest by a bullet from a gun. Older companions had been playing with the weapon.
