One Nation, Under God

MES Youth Show Patriotism

Last week, Jim Layton, State Commander of The Department of Montana VFW, and Sharon Kindle and Kari Hould of the VFW Auxiliary met with the Malta Elementary kindergarten classes of Mrs. April Ost and Mrs. Janine Tuss, and listened as the youngsters recited the pledge to the flag for them.

"It's never too early to start instilling a strong sense of patriotism and pride in our young people. Never," Hould said. "The county is fortunate to have schools that support reciting the pledge to the flag every morning. This is an indication of strength of standing together for something we believe in and passing it down from generation to generation."

While some were quiet, bashful and reserved, there were more students that were eager, excited and willing to share their accomplishments in kindergarten. The reading about "All I Ever Needed To Know I Learned In Kindergarten" by Robert Fulghum, should have included reciting the pledge to the flag.

The young Americans came out into the hallway individually and Layton and Hould listened as they shared the pledge. Kindle prepared certificates that were presented to them. When they were through, they received a pencil, and a small toy soldier as a reminder of how their freedom was earned. As State Commander, Layton also presented each child with an oval pin, which is his personal pin commemorating his year as State Commander.
