Mustangs and M-ettes Compete in Shelby, Wolf Point

The Malta track teams saw a couple of meets last week with the varsity teams seeing action at the Shelby Invitational on Saturday, April 27, and the team competed in the Scobey/Wolf Point Froshmore Invitational on Tuesday, April 23.

Several athletes from Malta's Track teams qualified for the 2024 Norm Girard Top Ten Meet in Glasgow including Mustangs Kyle Darrington, Bohdi Brenden, Gavin Slade, Mason Simanton, Tripp Lefdahl, Kael Young. TJ Siewing, Landon Retan and Trooper Stiles. M-ettes include Neva Jacobson, Brooklyn Knowles, Addison Ulrich, Caitlyn Wilson, Kenzie LaBrie, Karlie LaBrie, Giona Lamb, Denvyr Tuss, and Kendall Clausen.

The Top Ten Meet was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, but was moved up to Monday, April 29 due to wind conditions. Info on that meet will be in next week's PCN.

Malta is scheduled to compete in the Gene Nelson Memorial in Wolf Point on Friday, May 3, and the Havre Lions' Meet on Saturday, May 4.

At Shelby, the M-ettes placed fourth as a team in the women's meet with 60 points. Shelby won the meet with 65 points, Fort Benton was second with 63 and Sunburst was third with 62.

The Mustangs were eleventh in Shelby with 19.33 points. Chester-Joplin-Inverness won the men's meet with 89 points, Chinook was second with 60.17 points, and Shelby was third with 49.5 points.

Coach Shyla Clausen's notes for the Shelby Meet: Malta geared up for a showdown in Shelby, joining 20 other teams for a day of competition. Unfortunately, the weather didn't play nice, with rain and cooler temperatures making every event a bit more challenging. The pole vault was called off early due to the rain, and muddy conditions on the long jump board added an extra hurdle for jumpers. Plus, we had a few kids under the weather or dealing with injuries, so we had to scratch our varsity relays this time around. To top it off, Shelby's timing system decided to act up, so we had to resort to old-school hand timing. Despite all the obstacles, I couldn't be prouder of our kids for giving it their all. Our Malta girls still managed to snag 4th place at the meet!

M-ettes

Senior Giona Lamb led Malta, placing in all of the throwing events. Lamb won shot put with a throw of 33-9.5. She also placed fourth in discus with a throw of 89-4 and fourth in javelin with a mark left at 94-7.

Senior Addison Ulrich tied with two other runners (Taylor Evens of Conrad and Claire Bucklin of Sunburst) in the 100 with a time of 13.5. Ulrich also placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 30.14.

Freshman Carly Mears won the pole vault event by clearing 6-6. Mears also placed fifth in triple jump by leaving a mark at 28-10.

Sophomore Denvyr Tuss was second in shot put with a throw of 31-7. She was also third in discus with a throw of 31-7.

Sophomore Kendall Clausen was third in javelin with a throw of 97-8.5.

Sophomore Karlie LaBrie was sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.24. She nearly placed in high jump and took eighth place by clearing 4-4.

Freshman Carly Mears just missed placing in triple jump and took seventh with a mark at 27-10.

Mustangs

The Mustangs were led by senior Gavin Slade who was second in javelin with a throw of 143-8.

Sophomore TJ Siewing who was second in shot put with a throw of 41-6.

Mason Simanton was fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.8.

Sophomore Landon Retan was sixth in discus with a throw of 116-7.

The short relay team consisting of Kyle Darrington, Trooper Stiles, Slade and Simanton was sixth with a time of 47.24.

Coach Clausen's Notes for the Froshmore Meet in Wolf Point: Malta's thirty-three freshmen and sophomores traveled to Wolf Point for the Scobey/Wolf Point Froshmore, where they truly shone. The weather played along, blessing them with ideal conditions for a spectacular meet. Among them, some daring athletes decided to venture into new events and did a superb job. The Mettes and Mustangs athletes had many personal records and season bests. In the end, the Mettes proudly secured the 2nd place spot, while the Mustangs clinched a well-deserved 3rd place finish.
