Patti Young, Postmaster at Whitewater, Mont., is retiring after 40 years of service to the community through her job.

Jessica Henry, daughter of Doug and Judy Henry, and Jeff Zeiger, of Hinsdale, son of George and JoAnn Zeiger, of Glasgow are planning a June wedding on the Malta Courthouse lawn.

Dodson Coyotes track team members are back in the hunt. Nick Bear and Jesse Stephens both tasted victory in events at the Porcupine Invitational in Wolf Point last Saturday. Bear won the mile, won second in the high jump and tied for second in the 400 meter. Stephens won the javelin and high jump; he took second in the long jump, and third in the shot put.

Larry and Sue McGuire of Lewistown announce the engagement of their daughter, Mandi, to Lance Webb, son of Bill and Patti Webb of Malta. An August wedding is planned.

The Malta golf teams showed improvement at the Glasgow meet with the girls taking first with a score of 507; the boys fell short and lost to Glasgow by two strokes. Senior Garrett Zanto won first place at the meet scoring 83.

Mary Emily Barthelmess shared that her favorite meal is prime rib and mashed potatoes and her favorite book is “All Creatures Large and Small.” A retired rancher, Mary Emily resides at the Hi-Line Retirement Center, and the Senior Spotlight is shining on her this week.

Hoot Kienenberger rocked the stage at the Dodson Talent Show, which drew a packed crowd in the gym. Dodson artists displayed a plethora of talents for the community.

Malta trackster Sophia Stiles had a meet high taking first in four events at the Fergus Twilight Meet. The team placed first. The Mustang team felt the absence of Kyle Mitchell and scored four points.

Malta Dairy Queen Brazier celebrated its grand opening under the ownership of Dave and Sharon Miller. Chamber and city officials present were Dan Sisco, Mayor Byron Ereaux, Chamber President Lonnie Link, Art Lundstrom and Denis Bolland.

Malta School District voters will go to the polls again on Tuesday, June 1. They will be deciding whether the district will be allowed to run a general funds budget with no increase over the last two years or whether administrators will have to carve out $137,366 in budget cuts.

The Malta School Board made the decision, Malta High School athletes will be able to compete in both golf and track - at least for the remainder of this year.

The Phillips County News Office will host an open house in honor of Judy Flatt’s retirement. After 25 years she was laying down her pen and following Glenn…and the basketballs, the footballs and their grandkids.

Fourteen members were inducted into the Malta Chapter of the National Honor Society in a candlelighting ceremony. New members are Amber Diemert, Christina Foster, Kaydee Front, Juliann Keller, Amanda Long, Stephanie Lynn, Shannon McCoy, Nichole Wasson, Ashley Fried, Elizabeth Anderson, Scott Skones, Jesse Brown, Scot Ost and Cody Oxarart.

The Malta blood draw met the quota of 80 pints, surpassing it with 92 units. First-time donors were Andrea Bruckner, Debbie Wilson, Barb Swingen, Pam Kapp, Justine Rodkey, Alan Johnson, and Dwight Score all of Malta, and Ross Simpson of Saco.

Saco Superintendent Sandra Stellflug fulfilled a promise to students - come rain or shine - on Monday by spending the day on the roof of the Saco School. She held to her promise that if they met their goal in the Accelerated Reader program she would spend the day there. She was joined by Erica Broadbrooks, Corina Waters, Ashley Dopp, Alex Burnham and Brian Linn, the five students who compiled 100 points or more in the reading contest period. They were rewarded with pizza on the roof for their efforts.

Lindsey Kirkaldie recently placed first in the basic welding skills contest at the VICA State Skills Championship held in Havre. The only female competing, she won a gold medal, t-shirt, Texas Instruments calculator and $180 worth of welding supplies.

John Flansaas was elected commander of the Malta Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, succeeding Leonard Anderson who served two terms. Robert Soper was elected senior vice commander; BJ Goodheart, junior vice, and Dwayne Raymond, quarter master.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Romeo Fortin request the honor of your presence at an open house celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Join them on April 28, at the Little White Church.

Athletes recognized at the Malta Athletics Club banquet included Chip Young, voted winner of the Gary Sorenson Award and MVP defensive football player, Mike Cole, named MVP basketball player, Steve Baeth, MVP wrestler, and Ed Cerkovnik, MVP defensive football player. Falinda Doucette was named the MVP for girls basketball and Shaune Ereaux, most improved basketball player.

Dick Kalal was charged with deliberate homicide and aggravated assault in District Court in connection with the death of Vernon Chase, who was shot by Kalal and later died.

Ralph Patrick, South Wagner farmer and rancher, filed on the democratic ticket for County Commissioner from District A, the county’s western area.

Catherine Page and Brenda Nordlund were named as the valedictorian and salutatorian for Malta High School Class of 1974.

William Waters has filed as a candidate for the office of Justice of the Peace in Phillips County.

Mrs. Guy Hill, who will be remembered by Malta friends as Mrs. Dave Murphy, is in serious condition in a hospital in Ontario, California as the of result of an automobile accident. She was run over by a car as it backed out of a garage.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning for Matthew Mangan. Mr. Mangan passed away in Great Falls as the result of an accidental shooting while handling his guns. He served in WWII; and is survived by his wife, four sisters and two brothers.

Fire of unknown origin destroyed corrals, sheds and a straw stack and for a time threatened other farm buildings on the Clyde Waters farm, three miles east of Malta, on Monday afternoon. The fire apparently started in the straw stack and spread rapidly to nearby structures.

The Malta fire department, fire fighters from the Bowdoin Wildlife refuge and from the division of grazing rushed to the farm and neighbors and residents of Malta assisted in saving other buildings. The farm is operated by Bob Waters, son of Clyde Waters.

Voters of the Malta high school district Saturday approved a $150,000 bond issue for the construction of a physical education addition the Malta high school. Of 543 votes case, 433 were for the bond issue and 110 against.

John DeKoning and Richard Schwartz on Tuesday evening were chosen delegates, and Paul Faubert and E, T, Taylor, alternates to attend the state convention of the Knights of Columbus which will be held May 27-29 at Great Falls.

The broncs on Sunday’s jackpot rodeo at the Hagen arena west of town left little to be desired in the way of action, in fact they performed so well that only one man, Cliff Mans, made a qualified ride.

For a while it looked as if the local hospital would be filled up with casualties, but H. L. (Bunch) Patterson was the only rider seriously injured enough for hospitalization. He received a broken ankle when his horse fell with him at the catch pen. A collection was taken up from the audience for Patterson’s benefit. About a thousand people attended the rodeo, the first of the season.

Mr. and Mrs. Hagen were hosts at a dinner at Stine’s Sunday to which all contestants, their wives and girl friends were guests.
