Jim Truelove, of Malta’s Public Works, was pictured standing in a cloud of smoke while testing for the “phantom smell” in the city sewer system.

"Jonsey,” Pastor Fercho and David Veseth were making their way up Central Avenue during the Walk of Good Friday; with “Jonesy” and the Pastor carrying a large rugged cross.

Tyler French, a member of the US Air Force, presented the Phillips County Commissioners with an American flag which flew in USAF MC-12W over Kandahar, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Freedom. The flag bears witness to the sacrifice and courage of those men and women fighting terrorist forces threatening the freedoms of the United States of America and the world.

The Senior Spot was enlightening the world about Ginni Eskildsen; a retired farmer's wife who loves Christmas, cheese and crackers, Joe Montana and “Little Women.”

Whitewater Girls Golf team members were jubilant over their win at the Whitewater Invitation Golf Meet they hosted at Marion Hills Golf Course on April 15. Winning an impressive size trophy were Kayla Howard, Tatum Moore and Kaycee Howard.

Malta girls track member Sophie Stiles, helped her team win second place at the Havre Track Meet; the freshman won three events and placed second in two other events.

Harry and Alma LaBorn of Michigan and Vivian and Essie Mitchell of Nantelle, Montana, want to tell you that their kids, Lucille and Winston are getting married on April 23, in Malta, Montana.

The Dodson community lost a dear friend, Norman Solberg, on April 13th. He had been a dedicated mail carrier for nearly 40 years.

Whitewater Academic Olympic Team members, Hannah Anderson, Trace Simonson, Cody Scheffelmaer and Bella Lawless won the Oral Rounds for the Junior High, defeating eight other teams.

Dan Perry of Valley Motor/CarQuest presented a $300 check to the Malta FFA Chapter; the check represented the proceeds from the FFA Box Top program by CarQuest.

The grand prize winner in the creative writing contest was Ashley Wimmer Barsness.

The Malta girl’s golf squad opened its season placing sixth as a team out of nine teams. Julia Hammar led the squad shooting 109 and placing seventh out of 58 girls. Sarah Faaborg shot 132, April Hogquist, 126, and Jessica Perius, 161.

Laurin Salsbery scored a hole-in-one while playing par number four hole at Marian Hills. He used an eight iron over the water to get the ace. He was golfing with Del and KayDel Stiles at the time.

Taking first place at the JOM tournament in Dodson in the 7th-8th grade division was a Malta-Dodson-Harlem team coached by Babsie Bishop. The team included Colby Fetter, Steven Green, Vance Kielb, Kenny Solberg, Jenna Anderson, Cassie Wood, Shyla Bishop, and Katie Weber. Fetter was the MVP for the boys and Weber was MVP for the girls. Kielb and Green were all-stars.

Over 800 instrumental and vocal musicians will converge on Malta High School from 11 schools for the annual District Music Festival.

Steve Taylor was sworn in as the newest member of the Malta School Board by County Supt. Gary Baden. Bruce Hould who was reelected to the board was also sworn in.

The Malta School Board trustees voted to hold a second mill levy election but put off the decision of how much money to ask the voters to approve the second time around. Voters had turned down the first levy by a 444-314 vote. That levy would have generated $31,000 in additional funds.

Christopher Lorentzen and Caine Osborne were arrested in Malta by agents of the Tri-Agency Drug Task Force and Phillips County Sheriff’s Office Deputies. Deputies seized drugs and paraphernalia and 30 grams of methamphetamine. Lorentzen received a sentence of five years to the Montana Department of Corrections with all but 24 months suspended. Osborne received five years to the DOC with all five years suspended; he was fined $1,000 and placed under the supervision of the DOC.

Curtis LaMere received a revoked sentence and was sentenced to the DOC for three years. He had already served three years at Montana State Prison for his part in the robbery of the Cowboy Bar in Dodson.

Malta’s girls track squad used strong multi-event performances by LeeAnn Pekovitch and Mariah Guilfoyle with good supporting players to run off with the team title at the Havre Invitational.

Dodson Close-Up students Lourdes Fox, Francine KillEagle and Tyson Hunt had the honor of placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. They also witnessed the changing of the guard and visited President John F. Kennedy’s gravesite where the eternal flame burns. They were accompanied by Curtis Kron.

Mrs. Althea Goodfellow, of Saco, celebrated her 93rd birthday at the home of the Bill Donoho family, with many friends stopping by to wish her best wishes.

Interviewed in the Blue and White section of the PCN, was Cheryl Nordtug, a 5’8” blonde-haired sewing enthusiast, who believes one should, “Be happy and live your own life.”

Mrs. Dolores Hughes of Wagner filed as a candidate for the office of Phillips County Supt. of Schools on the Republican ticket.

Don Cole filed on the Republican ticket for the office of Phillips County Attorney. He served one term as county attorney from 1967-1971. Cole has been affiliated with Steve Granat since 1957.

Goldie Norrbohm and Jim Hicks are holding the high series so far in the mixed doubles bowling tournament. Their series is 1,326 and with it, they won first prize of $50 in the competition over the weekend. Mary Mans and John Bednarczyk were second with 1,240 for $30, and Donita Nordlund and Jerry Lindner won $20 third prize with 1,237.

Willis M. McKeon filed on the Democratic ticket for re-election to the office of Phillips County Attorney. A veteran of WWII, he is from Anaconda and began practice in Malta in 1949.

The VFW Auxiliary presented an American flag to the Sheltered Workshop of Eastern Montana Industries. Making the presentation was Mrs. L. E. Voorheis, Americanism chairman for the auxiliary. Accepting the flag were Mrs. Bill Garlie, Mrs. Felix McCollum and Mrs. Sam Carlson.

Four students from Malta were listed on the honor roll at the University of Montana in Missoula for the winter quarter. They are Alan Robertson, Keith Maristuen, Duane Walker and Vonda Fredrickson.

Jean Green, Malta’s AAU championship heavyweight fighter, fought a main event boxing match in Lewistown and won a unanimous decision over Dan Wall of Lewistown. Green was a last-minute substitute for Doug Henry who injured himself in training.

Former Phillips County State Representative Paul Kropp announced he will again seek the office of Representative from District 5.

Mrs. Richard (Gayle) Floren has filed for the office of Justice of Peace in Phillips County. She and her husband have two sons, Derrick and David; he is a member of the Malta High School faculty.

Muriel Bruckner, formerly of Malta now living in Seattle, Washington, wrote home describing the earthquake which startled the West Coast residents; a number of walls cracked in their office, the whole building shook and the lights swayed back and forth. It was the worst they had ever had in that part of the country.

Eggs were selling at 15 cents a dozen and live chickens were quoted at 11 cents. Live hogs were six cents a pound and hard northern wheat was quoted at 98 cents per bushel.

Einar Veseth departed for Norway where he planned to spend a year visiting relatives and friends.

Sid Davidson had a narrow escape where the steering mechanism of the car he was driving locked and the car turned over in a ditch, seriously damaging the vehicle.

The Great Northern Depot was getting a much-needed coat of paint.

SAFEWAY: CORRECTION. The price of cigarettes advertised in our ad last week should have been $1.73 per carton.

George Smith reported the birth of a son.

Walter Collins, who had sold his ranch in the Larb Hills and was planning on running a shearing gang in Idaho, gave a farewell dance to which 10 women and 40 men came. The women were exceedingly popular.

Dr. Clay “has a fortune within his grasp if he will properly advertise and push it,” said the Enterprise editor. “He savies a combination that will beat an old man Keeley. A well known saloon man of the locality, in an unguarded moment of remorse, asked Doc for something that would kill his desire for booze. He got the proper goods and it took less than three days to put him of the front seat of the water wagon. When he wants a drink now, he goes to the town pump like any good citizen.”
