Pat Doucette was presented with a 10-year Length of Service Award by Craig Pajum Electronic Systems Analyst and Matt Moorman, Observation Program Leader at the National Weather Service office in Glasgow, MT. Dale and Janet Veseth received a 15-year Length of Service Award from the National Weather Service for their dedicated service recording and reporting daily weather.

Paul and Marie Score announced the engagement of their daughter, Lynette, to Ron Burg. Lynette is the granddaughter of Pete and Clarabel Score and the late Donald and Katherine Mavencamp of Saco.

Young piano students of Janice Roberts performed for the residents at the Hi-Line Retirement Center. Those entertaining the residents were Kaycee Bond, McKayla Foster, Aiden Kaasa, Sierra White, Kirsta Meisdalen, Brylee French, and Addison Ulrich.

Local merchants were gearing up as Mother’s Day was approaching and the Chamber was offering a two-minute $500 Shopping Spree at the local Albertson’s. Tyrell Rummel, an employee at the store, was pictured making a practice run to see how much he could gather in 120 seconds.

The Phillips County Transit was offering free shuttle service on Sundays for those wanting rides to and from church services.

The Malta fourth graders took first place in the JJMT Tournament. Taylor Score, Connor Clausen, Dallan Messerly, Zach Welch, Rex Williamson, Darrow Messerly, Kanyon Stiles, Shane Soul and Hailey Welch were coached by Ostin Welch and Jerry Welch.

The controversial issue at the school at present is whether or not to make a visit with the Canine Detection Services for a surprise inspection before the end of the school year. School Board Chairman Orvin Solberg had made a motion not to bring the dogs back, the motion died for lack of a second. Complaints by parents were the service was too costly.

Winners in the Phillips County Ag In Montana Schools bumper sticker contest were honored at Ag Day. Winning were Kate Murdock, third grade; Shirley Hofer, kindergarten; Louis Brookie, fourth grade; Tyler French, fifth grade and Mitchell Demarais, second grade.

Derek Davis pinned an opponent on his way to claim a third-place finish at 130 pounds at the Malta Invitational. He is an eighth grader.

Malta trustees discarded without even a vote the idea of testing students involved in extracurricular activities for illegal substances. Trustee Sheila Simanton said she doesn’t favor testing athletes; Supt. Bill Parker said he is “all for limiting drugs” but the idea of singling out a certain class of students makes him “uncomfortable.”

An invitation was sent out inviting everyone to a Boy Scout Eagle Court of Honor for Dwight Score.

The three daughters of Jeannette Wilke invited family and friends to an 80th birthday celebration at the Malta Senior Citizens Center.

Teachers would be asked to show up earlier and stay later if a request by Malta High School Principal Kelly Taylor is followed up by school trustees.

To fund her trip to Australia to participate in the NBC Basketball Tour in July, Ashley Hammond was raffling off a Chillmark Bronze entitled “A Prayer For Peace”, a handsome western denim quilt made by her grandmother, Ree Simonson, and coasters etched and painted by artist Dave Maloney.

Malta School District trustees last week voted unanimously to support a one percent increase in the general fund budget when they go to the polls on April 6th. Trustees also approved using interest revenue from two funds to bring the total up to two percent.

Malta junior LeeAnn Pekovitch set three meet records and four other Malta athletes placed at the Park City Power Lifting Meet. She set the record by lifting a combined weight of 810 pounds in the bench, squat and deadlift events. Her 330-pound deadlift and her 310-pound squat were both meet records. She bench-pressed 170 pounds.

Former Malta student, 16-year-old Tasha Murphy, has been offered a trip to the Down Under International Games by her volleyball coach at Broadview School.

Mrs. Anna Carlson celebrated her 85th birthday and among her cards and greetings was a personal greeting from Richard Nixon, president of the United States. A native of Denmark, she came to the U.S. at the age of three and the family settled in Iowa, came to the Whitewater area in 1915 and now resides in Malta with her son, Charles.

The Malta wrestling program for grades one through eight wrestled in the district AAU tournament in Havre. First-place winners were Layton Salsbery, Laurin Salsbery, Adrian Doucette, Bill Scheffelmaer, Steve Nelson and Juan Kelly. Second-place winners were Mark Simanton, Todd Simanton, Ross Salsbery and Tom Webb.

Placing third were Ross Simser, Ray Henderson, Ken Lang and Jim Paulson. Placing fourth were George Moore, Mark Frietag, Brian Ophus, Darrin Demarais and Ralph Golik.

Roger Dale Ereaux, 17, broke his leg while playing basketball on the grade school playground during the evening. The bone in his right thigh was broken and he is in the Columbus hospital in Great Falls on March 11. Roger’s roommate for some of his stay was Doug Goodheart, 18, who had an operation to repair a dislocated left shoulder on March 12. Both of these Malta High School students had to attend the Class A basketball tournament with their ears to the radio, but they had lots of visitors from home folks in Great Falls last weekend.

The Malta Mustangs advanced to fourth place in the state Class A basketball tournament over the weekend. The Poplar Indians claimed the championship in a 54-47 victory over the Sidney Eagles.

Special mill levies for the maintenance and operation of the Malta schools were set by the school board. The high school preliminary general fund budget was set at $399,550 in comparison to last year’s $277,150; an increase of about eight and a half percent.

A Lodgepole man, Vernon James Chase, 26, died Monday morning in Great Falls following surgery to repair a leg wounded in a shooting on a Zortman street on Sunday. County Attorney Willis McKeon stated Wednesday afternoon he planned to charge Richard Kalal of Zortman with aggravated assault in connection with the case. Chase was brought to Malta where he was treated for the gunshot wound and then sent to Great Falls for orthopedic treatment to repair the damaged leg bone.

During this treatment, Chase went into cardiac arrest but was revived. Later in the intensive care unit he went into cardiac arrest again and could not be revived. McKeon is waiting for an autopsy report.

Chase leaves his widow, an expectant mother, and his parents among the survivors.

The American Legion and its Auxiliary unit celebrated their 30th birthday anniversary at the March meeting in the city hall rooms. A large birthday cake decorated the table and lunch was served to about 100 persons.

Lloyd and Selmer Ramberg were holding an auction on April 2, starting at noon. For sale would be a Model B John Deere tractor, one 2-horse scraper, bridge plank, a cream separator, a Hereford, 3 yrs., a potato digger, and one 1947 ½ ton Studebaker pickup, like new. Free lunch at 11.

Everyone is invited to a wedding dance on April 2nd at the Carnahan Ranch, for the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Carnahan.

Well-known rancher, Sid Hould, was buried Tuesday morning with Rev. Joseph Crowley officiating. Born in Minnesota in 1901, he came to Montana as a small child. He married Marguerite King, and they had three sons, Denver, Stanley and Donald.

Funeral services were held for Miss Agnes Kolence, 33, at Livingston. She lived at the Catholic Orphans Home in Great Falls until she was 11 years old when she came to live with Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dionne of Malta. She attended the Tuttle School and Malta High School. She enlisted in the US Navy as a WAVE on Dec. 16, 1943, and served at San Diego and Bremerton. She had entered the hospital on Jan. 18, 1946, when she was struck with leukemia, dying on Mar. 13, 1949.
