The Montana Community Preservation Alliance fundraiser was held at the Lucky Bullet, and the fundraiser took in about $2,800 in donations. The group is still a ways from achieving their goal of providing No Monument / No Free Roaming Buffalo signs.

Ron and Clarice Lundman observed their 50th wedding anniversary.

Amid the media releases across the nation, Eric Wilke assured the public the shutdowns would not affect his business as he is independently owned. It pays to shop local!

The Lady Panthers basketball team made it to the State Class C Girls’ Basketball Tournament in Hamilton. Last week the team was very sick with players sitting on the sideline babysitting upchuck buckets. This weekend won’t be a cakewalk.

The paint hit the canvas at the Cocktails ‘n Canvas painting session at the Tin Cup Bar and Grill. Artists gathered as Kathy McMahon hosted the expedition painting “Monet & Martinis.”

Both the boys’ team and girls’ basketball teams from Malta were headed into State Tournament action in Bozeman. Malta is only one of two schools that had both girls’ and boys’ teams qualify.

Jack Stenswick has sort of become the unofficial mascot of the Whitewater Penguins. He attends nearly every game decked out in Penguin attire. His bike license plate tells it all, “The Real Old Coyote”.

Jonnae Lumsden, an eighth grader from Whitewater School correctly spelled “contortion” to win the 1999 county spelling bee; runner-up was Megan Ereaux, a seventh grader from Tallow Creek School.

Losing by one point to the Hinsdale Raiders, the Whitewater Penguins fell short of a trip to State.

The life of the “city dump” is about to end, as the new dump site will be implemented in a few more days. It won’t be hard to find, it’s a few hundred yards from the current one. Bud Hasler, in charge of operations, asks that people stop abusing the dump. The “tree pile” has been the dumping spot for household garbage, paper, filthy refuge and even, last weekend, a dead cow* was dumped there. (* guess that is one way to make sure the city doesn’t fine you for a cow in the city limits.)

Jay Contway, a native of Malta, is one of three sculptors who have been invited to exhibit in the National Academy of Western Art Show at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

When is the right time to spray for cattle grubs? That’s the $64 question many cowmen are asking, and County Agent Hank Oefstos comes up with a few clues.

For once Hank says he knows what he’s going to say is OK because he got it from Mitch Oxarart. The only way to tell, says Mitch, is to look at the worm. If he is one inch long and dark gray like Hank’s hair, he is ready to be killed.

How do you get a look? Squeeze a few out. There’s no set time, but from now through March should be about right for the early grubs, and about 60 days later for a late crop if any.

Sprays that have rotenone in them can be had at any drug store or dealer. High pressure hoses work best, but lower pressure can be used if scabs are loosened with a stiff brush or some kind of scratcher.
