Curtis and Bonnie Starr retired from the PCN after 29 years in Malta. The new editor, Mark Hebert, took over with a “promise to build on the past.”

Levi Tatafu joined the Phillips County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy. He and his wife, Julie, are both graduates of Nashua; they have two children.

Little Mylle Clark, along with Kenny Clark and Kyle Wasson, were pictured in the PCN displaying prize items for the Loring Volunteer Fire Department Raffle.

The Malta Head Start children participated in February’s “I Love to Read” month; they read 157 books.

The Dodson Lady Coyotes outscores Mon-Dak in the second half 37-30, including an 18-point effort by sophomore Jessica Parker, but by then it was too late, as Mon-Dak advanced to the next round and Dodson licked their wounds.

Bobbi Knudsen, former M-ette standout, now a senior guard for the MSU-Billings basketball team was named the 2013-2014 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

With just 10 seconds left in the game, and her team (Saco-Whitewater Panthers) trailing by three points in the Eastern 3C Divisional Tournament championship game, Jada Sudbrach yanked down an offensive rebound, landed, elevated again and drained a two-point bucket off the glass, getting fouled in the process. The Saco-Whitewater crowd in attendance went nuts.

With grace and poise, the eighth-grade forward stepped to the free-throw line, hoisted the ball and it was nothing but net, the game was tied at 40-to-40. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Whitney Moline, with eight seconds on the clock, buried a 20-foot jump shot stealing the contest 42-40 as time expired, stealing the first-place hardware.

There were 52 Malta Elementary School students displaying 46 projects at the Science Fair. Their entries were in the areas of Life, Earth, Physical and Chemical.

Four California residents made a $200 donation to the Phillips County Hospital in memory of Marion Waters. They were fellow Shriners, had been to Malta hunting and attended a fund-raiser; Dr. Carl Totman presented the check to the PCHF.

Nathan Fried was named to the team for the Knights of Columbus Montana-North Dakota All-Star Game in Dickinson in June.

The familiar striped hat worn by Dr. Seuss’s “Cat In The Hat” adorned 266 heads at the Malta Elementary School in participation of “I Love to Read” month. The hats were sewn by volunteers. A breakfast consisting of green eggs and ham, a Dr. Seuss special, was served.

Legislation that will send $160,000 in missing Impact Aid to the Dodson School cleared one hurdle with the passage of a bill in the US Senate.

K.J. Wilke was pictured driving to the basket for a shot as a Nashua opponent tried to cut him off. K.J. plays for the Dodson Coyotes.

The Malta M-ette volleyball team was headed to District action with a clean slate. They had finished in fifth place in district play this season and would play against Plentywood in their opening game.

Mike Green, a third-year law student from Malta, along with teammate, Phil McCreedy, of the University of Montana, placed third at the National Negotiation Competition in Los Angeles.

The Saco Elementary Spelling Bee winners were Zach Mandeville (1st), Jared Mandeville (2nd), Cindy Nelson (3rd), Kirbi Siewing (4th), and Ann Sunford (5th).

About 75-80 people showed up to quiz the Phillips County Commissioners and the conditions and safety of the 500 miles of un-oiled roads.

Roy Wyse, a student at Dodson School, was named a United States National Winner in art by the United States Achievement Academy. The prestigious award recognizes fewer than 10% of all American high school students.

Eight students from Saco High School placed in the top six at the Business Professionals of America competition in Glasgow to qualify them for State in Billings. Those students are Brooke Beadle, Erica DePuydt, Jeff Freeman, Randi Plouffe, Trista Marshall, Katy Forbes, Erin Beadle and Christina Wiederrich.

Feb 28, 1974

Four generations of the Bebee family gathered, including patriarch Byron Bebee, his son, Frank, and grandson, Dennis, and great-grandson, Chad. Their ages span 75 years.

Bim Oxarart was elected as the president of the Beaver Creek Roping Club; Tom Steele, vice president, and Luke Kirkaldie and Greg Oxarart, directors.

The Big Flat Electric Cooperative truck went through the ice at Ester Lake, 22 miles south of Malta. The driver took a shortcut across the ice and it went through the ice, causing $2,000 to $3,000 in damage. It took 12 hours to get the truck out with a crew of five men, a wrecker service and several community members assisting. There was damage to the body of the truck, as well as to the motor and short-wave radio.

Dexter Henry of the Malta Boxing Club was awarded the Hard Luck boxing trophy at the conclusion of the State Novice Boxing Tournament in Libby.

At the Montana State Novice Boxing tournament in Libby, Jean Green won the championship in the heavyweight division. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Green, he has been a boxer for three months and is the undefeated state champion. He was in the ring less than a minute of actual fighting time in the two bouts he fought in the tournament. He took out one opponent in 25 seconds and the other in 35 seconds.

Mar. 3, 1949

Tom DeFlyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George DeFlyer of Freewater, died Sunday evening, Feb. 20th. After a fall earlier, he had not gained consciousness.

Ira Warren is the proud owner of a new Chevrolet truck which he will use for delivering oil.

Vic Nordlund had the misfortune to collide with a school bus at an intersection in Malta last week. The Nordlund car was badly damaged and the school bus had a badly smashed front bumper. Bud Phillips was with Vic at the time of the accident and both received minor bruises.

Little Miss Jeanne Hervol, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hervol, celebrated her third birthday last Thursday with a party at the home of Grandpa and Grandma Larson.

“Our Constitution-Worth Having, Worth Defending” is Montana’s subject in the nationwide American Legion High School Oratorical contest which is now open to students in Malta, Dodson, Whitewater and Saco high schools.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Haugness; a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Olson of Forks.

Construction of a graveled road across the reservation from Dodson to Harlem was a hot subject of conversation. The new job, crowed the Enterprise, would create a straight stretch and continuous stretch of 110 miles of gravel road between Dodson and Rudyard in Hill County.

R. V. Tucker, county coroner since the county was partitioned from parts of Valley and Blaine, had resigned his post.

Eggs, strictly fresh ranch variety, were selling at seven dozen for a dollar. It was the lowest price on record, remarked the Enterprise editor.

A new redheaded boy came to the home of D. C. Kenyon during the week, the Enterprise said.

Chouteau County commissioners had awarded a contract for the construction of a bridge across the Milk River west of Dodson. A Missoula firm took the job on a bid of $6,900.

“Mrs. Dr.” Clay, as the Enterprise put it, went to Rochester, Minn., for the customary checkup.

The Order of Eastern Star was throwing a big party. A home talent program of impressive proportions was arranged for the affair. There was a bagpipe number by Miss Cruikshank, and Leah and Helen Caselberg, Emma Trafton, Lily Davidson, Josef Sklower and the Hartman Bros., were down for a joint whistling act.
