Don Nevrivy celebrated his birthday on Feb. 20th by making a donation to the American Red Cross Blood Drive. He donated his 85th unit of blood; community-minded, he donated all his blood at the Malta drives.

It seemed like business as usual for the Malta M-ettes who won the conference and district tournament this year. They did so by blowing past the Glasgow Lady Scotties 54-19 in the semi-finals on Friday and defeating the Wolf Point Lady Wolves 53-33 for the championship the next day.

Admitting afterward she’d never heard the word before, Malta Middle School eighth-grader Bella Mackey managed to spell “lingua franca” to win the 2014 county spelling bee. Trace Simonson, an eighth grader from Whitewater was runner-up.

A benefit was set to assist 11-year-old Jake Stene in his battle with HSP, who would be getting a new kidney soon. His parents are Ode and Wendy (Goertz), formerly of Malta, now residing in Big Timber.

VFW Auxiliary President Linda Brown and Poppy Chairman, Kari Hould, presented certificates and cash awards to the winners: Grade 1 - (1st) Macy Blunt, (2nd) Charli Carnahan, and Lane Salveson; Grade 2 – (1st) Carson Ottinger, (2nd) Dylan Wright, and (3rd) Elly Anderson; Grade 3 – (1st) Kylee Nelson, (2nd) Elsie Bell, and (3rd) Cody Schipman.

Sheriff Scott Moran reported at the City Council meeting that the office handled 21 cases of partner or family member assault cases, 32 theft cases and 36 vehicle accident-damage cases in 2013.

Seven wrestlers from the Malta AAU Wrestling Club went to Poplar for the first meet of the year. Winning 1st place were Gunnar Cilz, Kohner Schipman, Spencer Gibbs and Oren Mackey; 2nd place, Tye Jones and 3rd place, Kaden Bishop and Peyton Jones. They are coached by Thayne Mackey, Jesse Schipman and Matt Jones.

Four hands and 176 keys was on tap for a dueling piano concert featuring Beth Atchley and Larry Swingen.

With a donation of $15,000 from the Glasgow Elks Lodge BPOE #1922, the Phillips County Hospital planned to purchase three portable ventilators.

A successful American Red Cross blood drawing of 99 productive units surpassed the quota of 80, with 105 people coming to donate. First-time donors included: LeeAnn Pekovitch, Anne Johnson, Tye Nelson, Nick Cilz, Mike McCorkel, LaToya Welch, Melissa Cochell, Amber Tremblay, April Hogquist, Crystal Hould, Sis Mann, Carolina Ramirez, Scott Seaford and Jim Robinson. Don Voegel received a cap for reaching nine gallons.

Winners of the third annual Frank LaRoque Memorial Pool Tournament held at the Hi-Way Bar were (1st) T.R. Olson (Chinook), (2nd) Dave Larsen (Glasgow), (3rd) Kurt Shuland (Havre), and (4th) Roy Cochran of Dodson.

Yvonne and Jim Garfield welcomed their first child, Shayen Don. She was born Feb. 1, 1999, in Glasgow, MT.

Winners in the Thursday night mixed bowling league High Women’s games were Sue Poulton 224, Connie Zanto 214, and Marge Clausen 167. High Individual Series: Arden Sanderson 610, Wesley Olsen 567 and Dan Perry 553.

The Dodson Public School is near closure after a former administrator sent the application for Impact Aid to the wrong address. Montana Senator Conrad Burns introduced legislation that will direct funds to the school, which are one-third of the district’s funding.

Not wanting to rest on the laurels of an 18-0 season, Mustang basketball Coach Bernie Wasser said all teams meet at district level with a 0-0 record.

“Stoichiometry” (a branch of science that deals with the application of the laws of definite proportions and the conservation of matter and energy to chemical activity) was introduced to Mrs. Darlene Pugh’s chemistry class at Malta High School when National Guardsmen Darin Hanson and Ed Pekovitch brought MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) to try and for scientific study.

Feb. 21, 1974

Lawrence Rowe, the five-year-old son of Paulette (Olson) Rowe, was killed when he was struck by a car five miles east of Malta. He was struck by a car driven by John Whit Levanger, from Glasgow.

The third annual feed hosted by the Milk River Wagon Train Association, aka the “Nut & Gut Feed,” was set for Friday, March 8, at VFW.

Mrs. Nettie Walsh, of Zortman, was honored on her 88th birthday by friends and family. Rev. Retzel said mass at her home for the occasion.

In celebration of her 90th birthday, Mrs. Susan Wiese observed the day while in the local hospital doctoring an infected finger. She has one son, Kyle of Malta, two grandchildren, Pete, of Malta and Rosemary of Martin City, 11 grandchildren and a brother, Leonard McMullen of Malta.

Mrs. Inglef Schwartz filed her petition for the office of Clerk and Recorder for Phillips County.

Members of the Malta Boxing Club will compete in Libby at the State Novice AAU Boxing Tournament. Coaches Dan Snider and Obert Dalby are taking Dirk Henry, who boxes at the 106-pound class, Dexter Henry in the 132-pound class and heavyweight boxer, Jean Green.

Mr. and Mrs. Ramay Hould celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with cocktails and dinner on their anniversary, Feb. 12.

The Malta Mustangs moved into a tie for the top spot in the Northern Class A basketball standings with a pair of victories. They won over the Browning Indians and upset the league-leading Shelby Coyotes.

Coach Obert Dalby, Dale Simanton and Mrs. Den Snider accompanied 11 boxers to Cleveland for an 18-bout meet. Winning were: Randy Cade, Pete Dalby, Jeff Darrah, Lance Beto, Delmer Henry and Dirk Henry. Also boxing this evening were Colby Eklund, Curt Reynolds, Tim Eklund, Al Snider and George Moors.

Feb. 24, 1949

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Fortin, and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Orville Jones.

Appearing before Police Magistrate Nellie Chase on arrests by Officer Einar Veseth were Mrs. Matt Gagen. She was fined $10 for driving onto the railroad track in front of the skidoo. The train hit her truck and pushed it down the track, she had escaped injury. Carl Reicher was picked up on a vagrancy charge and was fined $15 and 30 days in jail which was suspended on condition he would leave town.

An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 ducks, probably one of the largest single concentrations in Montana are being fed at Fort Peck.

Two high school students planned a jack rabbit hunting trip for weeks and hoped and prayed it wouldn’t be 40 below or a blizzard. They bore down on the Malta airport where a dozen rabbits were known to be. Disappointed when there were none there, they headed north. Two hours later, after digging out of their third snow drift lo and behold one lonely decrepit old jack feebly hopped into the beam of the headlights and looked into the light with much indignation.

There was a scramble for guns and door handles and out popped two eager hunters ready to wreak vengeance of this innocent creature. Fifteen seconds, a box of shells, and three dead cows later, the rabbit was three miles away and gaining speed fast. The hunters went home.

The Malta and Glasgow town basketball teams had tangled and Malta was victorious by a 39-14 score.

Frank Bronck, one-time roundup cook for the Circle Diamond cattle outfit, was in town from his Hinsdale ranch to call on his old-time friends in this region.

The Little Rocky Mining Company filed its articles of incorporation with the secretary of state. Capital stock was given as $500,000 and Malta the principal place of business.
